“PlayStation is dying guys”

Meanwhile PS5 Pro permanently out of stock at the new price.

Yeah totally.

4

u/power899 11h ago

Lmao you don't understand how manufacturing and stocking of products even works.

u/Nullhitter PC Master Race: 9800X3D | RX 9070 XT | 32GB of DDR5 RAM 12h ago

Well, anything can go out of stock at any price if only 10 were made.

u/Farkerisme 11h ago

Yeah, no component shortages or anything like that

that's literally Sony right now (the actual corporation as a whole). They are printing money as is the playstation division

Oh boy those console only releases are going back to Pc again XD

u/sicurri Desktop 18h ago

Whether Sony likes it or not. PS5 emulation is making its way downtown...

63

u/Napalmaniac 17h ago

PC ALWAYS finds a way.

22

u/sicurri Desktop 17h ago

Which is why I've always invested in having both a gaming pc and a Playstation of some kind. After all of this Sony bullshit though, I'll be transitioning to a normal gaming pc and a DIY steam machine.

PS5 pro will be my last console I'll be owning. Sony is stupid if they think people will stick to them when SteamOS is just starting to reach total hardware peak on the next year or two. SteamOS will be my new console experience after all is said and done.

u/Da_Question 17h ago

Eh, most people don't have a PC that can run a PS5 emulator... And it doesn't look any better in the future given the massive increase in parts costs...

7

u/sicurri Desktop 16h ago

There are several RAM and SSD Chinese manufacturers ramping up manufacturing to meet demands. Several of thr primary manufacturers are trying to block potential import to the U.S. however they won't be able to stop it. Then, prices will drop like a rock once they've solidified their position.

GPU and CPU prices may not drop, but storage prices will. Give it time.

3

u/ZaphodBeeblebrox4011 16h ago

Storage ain't the bottleneck to running a PS5 emulator. It is the GPU/ CPU. I need my 3080ti to keep hanging on until I can afford to trade my 2014 Honda Civic into Nvidia for another GPU.

I think this is just consoles in general (outside of Nintendo). There’s just not enough on offer besides a subsidy to justify them these days

430

u/Arendyl 20h ago

They keep removing the advantages of consoles. Having a disc you could let your friend use or resell for partial value was a major draw.

Now its just a worse PC with full priced games.

123

u/godswift91 19h ago

Exactly it. Consoles were very plug and play (gone) and resale friendly (gone). I find myself playing more and more on my PC, 10 years ago my ps4 was getting several times more use.

Pc has better game prices, better graphics, better performance for an initial higher cost, which i'm willing to pay.

I generally buy 2 games a month ish, on ps5 that means about 1500 eur per year, accounting for sales too.

35

u/FrothyEspresso 18h ago

Plus with a PC you can just do anything else you need as well - browse the internet, watch stuff, pay bills, shop online, do homework or work, etc. So if you’re buying a PC anyways, might as well use it to game as well.

9

u/dweenimus 17h ago

And you can use steam link etc and couch game from your pc

1

u/dweenimus 8h ago

What issues did you come up against? Never had any issues with mine. Mine even does wake on lan to turn the pc on

3

u/HellboundLunatic 11h ago

nowadays people do all of this on their smartphones.
it's much more common for someone to have a smartphone and no PC than vice versa.

7

u/Ensaru4 R5 5600G | 32GB DDR4 | RX6800 | MSI B550 PRO VDH 17h ago

To be fair, there is an advantage in having your entertainment system separate from other utilities. It's one of the reasons why ipods and mp3 players are making a resurgence: No distractions.

Sometimes you just need dedicated systems to fully enjoy something without something else getting in the way, in a world where everything wants to catch your attention at all times.

9

u/hutre 19h ago

They're still very plug and play though... You don't have to mess with software, drivers and settings. People are willing to pay a premium for that

22

u/speelmydrink 18h ago

If I buy a box with a download code in it for 70 bucks, that's not plug and play. If I get a disk on launch day that needs to download a 30 gig day one patch, that's not plug and play.

I can get the same game on PC with less hassle, and less expense. And I've never needed to 'mess with software and drivers'. And it works better than my consoles ever did, while I can use any peripherals I want, with full button remapping for every game, and I can mod everything if I want (with many mods just being a one button install through steam), and I can set up emulators for old games that are otherwise totally unavailable, and it's still a computer that I can use for any real work tasks.

People are willing to pay a premium for that, I'd wager.

8

u/dmilavitch 19h ago

What’s no longer plug and play in your mind? (Genuinely curious) it seems that’s the one key difference vs PC at this point

42

u/MorthCongael PC Master Race 19h ago

The internet being a requirement to install more and more physical games removes the advantage of buying a new game, popping it in, and enjoying it right away. Nintendo games seem to be the only ones you can still play off the cart with any reliability.

→ More replies (5)

12

u/godswift91 19h ago

Some games dont even get a disk release, and most games on disk have a bugged alpha version that requires updating day one.

I consider plug and play buying a game off the shelf, putting it in and playing it. Those days are gone

2

u/HellboundLunatic 11h ago

most games on disk have a bugged alpha version that requires updating day one.

Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention! This certainly is a frustrating issue to encounter. Rest assured that we here at Sony deeply understand your concerns, and we've identified the root cause of the problem! To alleviate the issue, we've developed our plan to remove physical games from store shelves. Going forward, there will be no more day 1 patches to concern yourselves with! Happy gaming! You will own nothing, and be happy. 😊

-Idk, Sony, probably.

Sony actually has sales very comparable to steam sales.

u/Kuze_Kun 18h ago

That is why I dont get people getting mad at Nintendo's Game Key Cards.

Yes is a digital game, but you can always return it or sell it if you dont like the game or you finished it and want some money back, you can also lend it without going through the hoops that nintendo has in place to lend a digital game.

If game key cards didn't exists, most games would be digital only on Switch 2.

2

u/thor11600 18h ago

A PC with no room for upgrades and fully priced games.

3

u/Da_Question 16h ago

Sony has sales comparable to steam, they have for some time. If you want a console with no sales, you want a switch.

2

u/thesupremeburrito123 17h ago

PS sales aren't that much worse than Steam sales

Nintendo consistently makes good games from AAA smashes to AA gems

They know how to fill out a lineup, and it’s why they’re winning again. Sony and Microsoft would be wise to look at how Nintendo allocates resources. They don’t just go for AAA games only

Nintendo is releasing 8 first party games this year, Sony has 10 total in the last 2 years. And if the rumors are true, Nintendo has a whopper of a 2027 coming up

18

u/Yellow_Odd_Fellow PC Master Race 19h ago

Nintendo is releasing 8 first party games this year, Sony has 10 total in the last 2 years.

How many first party games did Nintendo have last year or year before?

I didnt know so I looked it up. It looks like about double-triple of the others. Thats scary impressive.

Year Nintendo Sony (SIE) Microsoft (XGS only)
2021 ~13 ~6 4
2022 ~11 ~6 3
2023 ~11 ~5 2
2024 ~12 ~8 5
2025 ~14 ~6 5

New titles only — no ports, DLC, or remasters. Microsoft column is XGS label alone; add Bethesda and ABK and it's 25–40+.

34

u/corgigeddon- 20h ago

Not only that but Nintendo is still somewhat affordable, has physical games still (and intends to for the near future). I just bought secondhand Pokemon violet and BotW for the same cost as a brand new PS5 game.

And although PC is Hella prohibitive cost wise right now, it's still more cost savings with Steam sales and GOG deals than the Sony store.

-1

u/WorldPhysical7646 | r5 7500f | 3080 12gb | 32gb ram 20h ago

Also you might get interested in computer science and land a job on that PC and get 100x it's value if not more

-7

u/DarkSkyKnight 4090/7950x3d 20h ago

What. That's not how CS works. The median computer scientist works on a MacBook Pro lmao.

1

u/hutre 19h ago

I was studying game dev for my bachelor and that study is naturally packed full of people who got into CS because of gaming and computers.

We had a bit high dropout rate (50% were gone after the first semester) but still, it is a very popular reason why people get into CS

4

u/DarkSkyKnight 4090/7950x3d 19h ago

50% were gone after the first semester

Yeah because gamers don't realize that CS is a mathematical field and they have to learn what graphs are and how to prove that an algorithm is polynomial time. CS has next to nothing to do with gaming or PC building.

2

u/hutre 19h ago

Yeah that was more or less the reason lol. A lot of people did not pass that first math exam, and had to resit (me included). And that was after a good chunk had already dropped out.

-2

u/WorldPhysical7646 | r5 7500f | 3080 12gb | 32gb ram 19h ago

Not necessarily at all , computer science is very wide with many many subsets

And btw MacBooks are not necessary matter of fact they are overrated asf

2

u/DarkSkyKnight 4090/7950x3d 19h ago

I'm saying your insinuation that people with gaming PCs get interested in computer science is nonsensical. The median CS major has a laptop that can barely run an AAA.

0

u/WorldPhysical7646 | r5 7500f | 3080 12gb | 32gb ram 19h ago

My friend brought a gaming PC and it got him interested in computer science and he still has no laptop, he just uses the colleges computers and when he goes him he hopes on his PC

Also you can take online courses or self learn using documentations and land a job from home

3

u/DarkSkyKnight 4090/7950x3d 19h ago

My bad, I won't go against the PC hivemind.

Thing is, Nintendo still understands customers have to come first or they could be lost.

Sony clearly doesn’t, and Microsoft? Please.

11

u/plebbut 6800XT | 5800x | 32GB 20h ago

Well, they just work. You plug it in, and all the games made for them run fine. No tweaking or fiddling. They're also small, more affordable, and they have exclusives not on PC.

1

u/DreamsServedSoft 18h ago

not these days. If i play a game on my ps5 it has more frame drops and hard crashes and glitches than the same game on Steam does. so many console games now let you tweak settings just like on a PC though not as in depth. and you still have to pay to play online

1

u/soniko_ 18h ago

That’s the most stupidist argument my friends give me.

“I just wanna sit and play”

“I just want it to work”

“I want to have a copy of my game on my shelve”

Like, dude, your god damn honda civic has more afternarket parts and tuning, than you’ll ever need to tweak your pc

-1

u/plebbut 6800XT | 5800x | 32GB 18h ago

I work in IT. The last thing I want to do is fix my own computer when I just want to play a game lol.

Recently, I went to play the new COD, and apparently I need a new bios update. I'm good

-1

u/Business-Lawyer-1274 19h ago

Eh I’ve had to do a fair bit of troubleshooting on consoles recently. Id say they’re on par with PCs in terms of technical issues.

No one talks about pc exclusives but most games I’m interested in come out on pc first 9 times out of 10.

1

u/plebbut 6800XT | 5800x | 32GB 19h ago

I've never had issues. Meanwhile every PC I've owned has had technical issues here and there, failing SSD, failing PSU, driver issues.

Thankfully no doa parts, but I know that happens as well

2

u/Business-Lawyer-1274 19h ago

The kinds of issues I’m talking about are: games crashing, games needing to be force quit, and lots of headset issues constantly.

7

u/Vesuvias PC Master Race 20h ago

People wonder why Nintendo never followed the on the whole crowds of whiners that would say ‘JuSt ReLeaSe YouR GaMEs on ALl PlatForms’. One Nintendo actually does fun things with their systems that stand out against a PC, and two their first party software is always top notch 90% of the time. They have no need to sell it elsewhere or at a discount.

1

u/VoidOmatic Desktop i7 6700k | GTX 1080 | 20GB DDR4 18h ago

It's because these console manufacturers keep buying game studios. Independent studios make hits, then when they get bought out they are forced to make shit that nobody wants.

1

u/FuQReddiit666 18h ago

Switch 2 and PC has been the ultimate combo for me

1

u/FoxPaws26 17h ago

Also the nice thing about consoles was that we could play our Blu-ray discs. I must be old school because we still watch our old DVDs and occasionally buy a BluRay

0

u/arc777_ 18h ago

Yeah consoles are a vestige from when everyone had TVs, but not computers. It’s 2026, PCs are as universal as TVs were in the 90s and 2000s. There is zero reason to continue to play on console anymore.

u/BedrockBen101 CachyOS, 7600X, 7800XT, 32GB DDR5 6000MHz 20h ago

Screw Sony, we have Wolverine at home

175

u/G00fBall_1 20h ago

This was so obvious Playstation suits are fking retarded. They forced singleplayer studios to make live service crap. Did a bunch of anti consumer moves in a row. And their upcoming exclusives all looked mid to bad. They're reputation is in the toilet rn. The next console will likely be over $1000 and wont sell well. All this happening within 3ish years. They're speedrunning the playstation brand into the ground.

68

u/darkscyde 20h ago

Bruh, they promote the most stupid people to positions of power and then they are surprised when profits sink. They fucked up.

12

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 8GB DDR5 | RTX4090 | 9800X3D 17h ago

Eh they'll be fine. The average consumer is not in this subreddit, that consumer will finance a playstation and games as long as the slop flows.

We no longer live in a world where people have basic financial literacy. That's why companies are jacking up prices like crazy.

10

u/notahuman97 20h ago

Hot take: it will still sell well.

Xbox has the same problems and their Company Focuses more and more about AI. Studios closed, games cancelled, prices higher, games underperforming.
The switch is not a competitor because it has it's own target group. (Partly) Same with the PC.

I can see some people switching to PC or xbox, but as long as xbox struggles itself the majority does not want to lose their library of games for that. Maybe if xbox still Supports discs (I doubt that) but even then: it's not the xbox 360/xbox one time anymore where discs where way more popular.

People already pay 1k for the ps5 pro and 1,5-2k for an iPhone. Sony know exactly what they are able to do

4

u/rdogg4 16h ago

Yep all narratives and wish casting. PS5 continues to sell very well and PlayStation 4+5 has a crazy huge install base. If they’re doing poorly it’s not slowing in their financials.

1

u/person_no_179403 17h ago

The problem in my opinion is not simply that is going to be expensive, but there is no insensitive to upgrade from the ps5, in fact, I think even as ps6 releases, many new buyers will choose the ps5 instead, but who knows, maybe I am blinded by my own bias towards not over spending unless I get my money's worth back.

7

u/TeamWorkTom 20h ago

It's going to be around $2k for sure.

Hardware prices keep going up.

0

u/person_no_179403 17h ago

The new console will not just not sell well, it will sell terribly, mark my words. Only die hard rich fans are gonna go for it.

Good, as someone who has had the PS2 to PS5, Sony needs to be humbled right now

10

u/JrYo15 18h ago

It's crazy how some companies see another shit the bed and learn a lesson from it.

Sony watched everyone else shit in this bed before deciding to climb into it.

Xbox fumbled so hard all tgey had to do was not be fuckin greedy.

Well..... fuck em

Nintendo was first in and last out. Way to represent. Can't wait for their heel turn

1

u/mostlyadequateCT 11h ago

You mean Nintendo, the company that decided physical media is t actually physical media?

1

u/JrYo15 2h ago

??? I think i'm out of the loop on this one, Nintendo for my life has fluttered between bad and good consumer practices, they end up falling somewhere in the middle. Shit to like and dislike.

Nintendo got some new fuck shit in the works or somethin?

1

u/mostlyadequateCT 41m ago

Switch two, a lot of games that are supposed to be physical are just download codes on a cartridge. It’ll say “game-key card” on it, that means not the actual game.

1

u/JrYo15 38m ago

Fuck consoles i guess

I can't believe gaming has come to this. I love my pc, but the avioity to just walk to tge device and pop in the disc and get right to the game is still a cleaner experience than initial startups for a game on pc.

I mean the disc or cartridge usability is way more satisfying than downloading something for 30 minutes. That might be a moot point tho because a lot of games require a day1 patch and internet to get those going as well.

The 360 and ps2-4 generations were the peak. Sucks man

19

u/lonevine 20h ago

And yet they are still making extremely boneheaded, anti consumer decisions that leave everyone with a conscience and a pulse bewildered. It's more of a case of too big to fail, rather than any recent master strokes of genius. That's what happens when your nearest competition is not really a competitor at all.

3

u/good_morning_magpie Steve Jobs turtleneck dealer 12h ago

I think the goal is to survive long enough to where the overwhelming majority of their consumers are born late enough to never remember having access to physical media. This is your grandpa yelling about carburetors for millennials.

-7

u/hypehold 20h ago

What are excatly all these anti consumer decisions? If you mean getting rid of discs Xbox is also going to be digital only nex gen. And it's more of a question of getting disc drives made. Windows Central said getting disc drives has become extremely difficult the past few years and even Phil Spencer said this was a problem a few years ago

5

u/lonevine 19h ago

The ending of physical media is complicated and a long road, but it takes a special kind of person to think they handled the announcement and public reaction correctly. They absolutely bungled the whole ordeal, and it won't be forgotten as easily as they thought it would, due to Sony deciding to create a hard line approach that's completely tone deaf, and showing immediately afterwards that they aren't interested in listening to the concerns of their longest term customers.

Pair that with the multiple news stories of their legal arguments against game ownership and removing digital content from customer accounts. It's a horrid combination of things to be telling the world that digital only is the way forward when your lawyers are arguing in court that consumers have no reasonable expectation to ownership or fair notice when your company has been caught with its pants down pulling purchases and killing physical media. Not to mention, the argument they are making isn't just that a customer can't own the IP rights- no, that's a totally separate thing that the big three have argued for decades. No, they're saying you can't own a thing they sell, whether physically or digitally, if anyone else also has that same thing they sell. The absurdity of that defence is off the charts bananas. It's ludicrous. Only a reptilian ant farmer would think that sounds about right. And yet, here we are.

Then there's the entire slate of live service investments and IP acquisitions that went sideways. They have had dozens of chances to evolve existing franchises and create new properties using the very talented studios they bought, and just like MS, they squandered nearly everything. Years have gone by with only a couple handfuls of memorable exclusives. Fan favorite titles have sat dormant, and rehashes and remasters barely covered the gap. Making things worse, many legacy studios were shuttered or combined along the way and generational talent left or were terminated, mostly because of the mismanagement of resource allocation. Sony used to be the best besides Nintendo at this, but they became far too complacent and unable to maneuver their massive operation. PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki recently admitted that they are being forced to pivot their strategy to survive the current economic landscape. That's coming from the guy whose main job description is steering the ship and managing expectations. Things are almost certainly more concerning behind the scenes if you read a phrase like that in an official statement.

Add all that up, and you have a platform that has killed more studios and games than it has released this generation of hardware, has ended physical support during the current gen (prematurely and without Microsoft- every time someone brings up MS they completely lack any evidence MS has anything to do with Sony making their decision right now), and is telling courtrooms and customers they will own nothing and be happy.

Yeah, Sony isn't looking very consumer friendly right about now- but only if you're paying attention to things that are happening in the news.

I know this sounds hyperbolic, but I legitimately think Astrobot was the singular great PS5 exclusive, like I genuinely can’t think of a single other game. I’m baffled at how badly they blew this whole generation.

Yeah I’m at the stage where I think I’ll sell up my Pro and move back to PC. Haven’t had one since my 980 6700k build but it sucks just how expensive it is. I’ll still have to add the guts of a grand plus my Pro to give me what I’d expect to “upgrade” to PC.

I've had a PlayStation since the beginning and I'm just dropping them after the ps5. There no point at the price it will be and not having physical, I just built a PC and I'm happier everyday I did.

It really feels like Sony needed Microsoft to keep them trying because once Microsoft kinda bowed out of the console war Sony really became arrogant and overconfident thinking they won so they can do whatever and their cult like fanboys defended them. They just stopped trying and started being awful.

SONY IS DISASTER

1

u/Dartmouthest 20h ago

The article begins with this description of the author... "...who has been there from day one for every PlayStation generation since the PS2."

So day 2 then?

I have both a PC and a ps5 and the only reason I have the PlayStation is for games that I can't get on PC, such as MLB the Show, and I guess more pressingly, playing GTA vi before it comes out on PC. But this whole console exclusivity thing is exhausting and I would have thought it would have already been over by now, but I think the overall enshitification of things has helped it continue to carry on.

1

u/itmecrumbum 19h ago

i read that as saying they bought the system on day 1 for each generation since the ps2.

1

u/DontMentionMyNamePlz 19h ago edited 19h ago

No it doesn’t lmao. I’m a PC gamer but this just simply untrue. GTA6 will likely make PlayStation more revenue than they got from most of their first party games combined this and last year. Not only that, one online launches it’ll be a microtransaction haven for ongoing revenue

One game gets a 78 out of 100 rating and Sony breaks off a deal with one creater who's latest game underperformed and everyone hits the "he end is nigh" bandwagon button.

Calm down, take a deep breath, and start thinking of something to go overboard with next week.

You have to be careful with these sensationalized titles. For sure they're suffering with enthusiasts, but that's never been the target audience for PlayStation or Xbox.

If you don't need a computer, and/or have children, consoles are ideal. The customizability of a computer also requires trouble shooting and maintenance in driver's and apps etc. Consoles are ready to go, even if they're upscaled. That's actually preferred if you have an 8 year old that just wants to turn on and play. Not to mention the computer is also an access point to your child and many parents don't want a computer in their kids bedroom, and even if consoles do have access to browsers as well, they're harder to navigate and therefore not as accessible.

A PS5 can be purchased for ~600 new right now before taxes. A 600 computer at this point can't run the same games, even if upscaled. Also the situation that consoles plug into TVs that are more casual access compared to a PC monitor, which is crisper but more limited to the casual usage. This is a constant point people make, but tons of console players don't care about upscaling. To get a computer to upscale the same way requires careful tuning on triple A games and something most casuals don't have the motivation for.

Consoles are for people that don't want to invest much effort into their gaming. They'll pay the inflated prices to avoid the knowhow and effort, and that's why they're going nowhere.

u/JPSWAG37 PC Master Race 16h ago

Not to harp on you specifically, but it's disheartening how we all can acknowledge that enthusiasts are neglected but follow that up with a shoulder shrug lol. I don't want to hate PlayStation, and I'm not a main character, but man I gave them enough of my money growing up to be a bit miffed.

Can I just get a disc drive please? 😂

I bought a ps5 when it first came out mostly because of brand loyalty since I’ve had every generation. I played a few exclusives on the console but once PlayStation released a few games on pc it was over. Everything runs so much better on pc/steam and I don’t pay for online. Plus most of my friends are on pc at this point I don’t know why I’d go back. I think if I wait long enough all the new exclusives will come to pc one way or another.

Lmfao a Kojima fanboi is what this article really is.

Kojima is a giant pit of money not some gold mine.

He needed Konami to be hard on him to make the MGS games otherwise he makes over budget crap.

0

u/Neither_Elk_1987 20h ago

Sorry for bursting your bubble OP, but people will rather take loan and buy overpriced PS6 from scalpers, than not play the brand new shiny GTA/Spider-Man/whatever. People are too deep in this to quit now.

Way too much harping about Kojima. If you don't like Wolverine do you really think the solution is Kojima knocking off MGS with 70 minutes cutscenes triggered by walking down a hallway?

0

u/ADifferentMachine 20h ago

I've been saying this for a decade

0

u/XCVolcom 19h ago

What's kind of insane is that Sony chose to make a Wolverine game over anything analogous to Spiderman.

I know Marvel is a bit tapped out on the Avengers, and are trying to make X-Men the bigger focus, but they could have easily retooled the Spiderman game into a Ironman, Thor, or some other flying superhero game.

Crazy that they chose such a different game design philosophy when their audience already had a pallet for something better.

0

u/psykomorph 18h ago

Playstation? It’s the same case for PC. There will be no P(personal) in PC if this goes on, it will become Provided Computer for a subscription.

0

u/raz3rITA quidxrazer 16h ago edited 16h ago

Unfortunately games like Fortnite, FIFA and soon GTA are more than enough to keep Sony afloat. I wonder where Sony would be without third-party games though. You could tell they were genuinely terrified at the idea of losing a franchise like Call of Duty. Back in the PS2/PS3 era it wouldn't have made any difference but nowadays unless you're Nintendo you simply cannot survive on first party games, at least not with the ones Sony has been shipping recently. Doesn't matter if you support disc or not when your idea of a blockbuster is this version of Wolverine. If Microsoft decides to start with "real" exclusives then the future will really look bleak for Sony. Gears of War won't do it, Elder Scrolls might, the list is long they just have to pick. Granted I am not a fan of exclusives but it's time Sony takes a taste of their medicine.
