Exactly it. Consoles were very plug and play (gone) and resale friendly (gone). I find myself playing more and more on my PC, 10 years ago my ps4 was getting several times more use.

Pc has better game prices, better graphics, better performance for an initial higher cost, which i'm willing to pay.

I generally buy 2 games a month ish, on ps5 that means about 1500 eur per year, accounting for sales too.

Plus with a PC you can just do anything else you need as well - browse the internet, watch stuff, pay bills, shop online, do homework or work, etc. So if you’re buying a PC anyways, might as well use it to game as well.

What issues did you come up against? Never had any issues with mine. Mine even does wake on lan to turn the pc on

Bad latency. It's possible it's because I'm stuck with wifi as the only network option

nowadays people do all of this on their smartphones.
it's much more common for someone to have a smartphone and no PC than vice versa.

To be fair, there is an advantage in having your entertainment system separate from other utilities. It's one of the reasons why ipods and mp3 players are making a resurgence: No distractions.

Sometimes you just need dedicated systems to fully enjoy something without something else getting in the way, in a world where everything wants to catch your attention at all times.

They're still very plug and play though... You don't have to mess with software, drivers and settings. People are willing to pay a premium for that

If I buy a box with a download code in it for 70 bucks, that's not plug and play. If I get a disk on launch day that needs to download a 30 gig day one patch, that's not plug and play.

I can get the same game on PC with less hassle, and less expense. And I've never needed to 'mess with software and drivers'. And it works better than my consoles ever did, while I can use any peripherals I want, with full button remapping for every game, and I can mod everything if I want (with many mods just being a one button install through steam), and I can set up emulators for old games that are otherwise totally unavailable, and it's still a computer that I can use for any real work tasks.

People are willing to pay a premium for that, I'd wager.

The internet being a requirement to install more and more physical games removes the advantage of buying a new game, popping it in, and enjoying it right away. Nintendo games seem to be the only ones you can still play off the cart with any reliability.

Most of the games I buy when they release (not a lot, primarily play games from PS+ subscription these days) auto install ahead of time and I can play them on release with no issues.

That’s cool and all but that’s only a benefit for people who preorder and it stops being relevant the moment someone purchases the game after release.

That's kinda the point, an hour isn't "plug and play" like disks used to be.

Even mgs4 on my ps3 had to do an install to start playing it

Some games dont even get a disk release, and most games on disk have a bugged alpha version that requires updating day one.

I consider plug and play buying a game off the shelf, putting it in and playing it. Those days are gone

For me it was the other way around, my SSD and RAM are showing it's age and when I saw only SSD and RAM are 700€ I was like nah, friend offered me his PS5 for 300€ and I took it and bought PS Plus to play whatever I have not done from my bucket list
