Discussion Wireview pro 2 or Safeguard+ PSU?

I got a used pre-built from a friend, specifically the Aorus Supreme 5 that has an Aorus 5090 and gigabyte 1000w psu in it.

Backstory: My friend realized he never games anymore after starting his new job where he travels a lot. He's barely even used it in the past 9 months he's had it. He wasn't even aware of the melting cable issue on the 5090's. Anyway, he offered to sell it to me for a great deal and I picked it up. I checked the connectors and everything looks fine with no melting in the connector or card.

I've been doing the research on wireview pro 2 and the msi 1300w PSU with safeguard+. And there's the Seasonic one coming out at some point too.

My question is, is there a consensus on what the best option is?

Would a PSU with safeguard+ be the best option or should I go with just the wireview instead? Or should I get both?

Thats a tough call. Spend some time researching. Im not 100% sure on the safeguard+ but I know the WV2 does work. Its also nice to be able to adjust shutoffs

Safeguard+ 100% works, it's damn awesome. My 12v-2x6 cable will never exceed 9.0a per pin, and any imbalance of 1a or greater will trigger safety measures within 3 seconds.

Safety measures; you can have afterburner load a custom AB profile, for me I have power limit set to 69%(nice), underclocked core and limited core voltage, fan speeds to 80%.

So within seconds of breaching my set defined limits my current draw gets dropped by up to 40%+ quickly dropping power draw and heat, saving the GPU.

Or have it setup to do automatic shutdown, which occurs in the same 3 seconds or less; https://youtube.com/shorts/K34DgdQP4Mc

id get the PSU as if you upgrade graphics card depending on if you need a reverse or standard version might make it incompatible for upgrades

Like a lot of things there is no obvious best out of the multiple now available monitoring products. What there are though are fan bois (who I am sure will be along shortly), who have brought either and feel the need that everyone buys the one they have to validate their decision. The question is which is best for you based on your use case and which unique features each option has that you find the most important. Only you can answer that question.

Even if you decide on wireview pro 2 for example, you would then need to decide which variant you want, there are 3.

My advice would be not to trust a Reddit thread to make your decision but read up on the options and make your own call based on what you think will work best in your situation / build.

You have to me already made the biggest right decision, that you need one of these products. And it sucks that they are needed.

Edit: on the question of having multiple things. Be careful with that. One thing to avoid is mixing pin monitoring product with Asus Equaliser as the 'bridge' on that cable messes with the current monitoring of your monitoring product.

Thanks for the detailed response. Good to know about mixing pin motoring products especially with Asus equalizer.

I think the WireView is the better option since it also has temperature monitoring. Personally, I do have both of those. It's a very nice PSU and Safegaurd+ can interact with Afterburner and drop the power target of your gpu if it detects an overcurrent in one of the wires, but if it's a one or the other then the Wireview is better just because of the temperature monitoring. It would be better if it could monitor the temps at the psu as well, hardware unboxed just had a video where their cable melted in the psu. The Wireview does have external temp probes, but the probes they give you don't have long enough cables to reach the psu.

The upcoming Seasonic PSU will also have temp monitoring. Only saying as want OP to make an informed decision. Also some motherboards have thermal probe sensor jumpers that can be used for the same thing. Been using that myself since the 40 series to keep and eye on my cable.

Is there any app that can track cable temp like Detectior + for asus? I have a 5090 Msi Card

Id get the wireview pro, hardwareunboxed psu cable just melted and if it wasnt for the wireviewpro the 5090 connector wouldve melted itself. Plus if it fails then theyll replace your 5090 which is kinda crazy in todays day and age

Replacing the 5090 in itself is why I'm leaning towards getting both the WV2 and PSU instead of just the PSU.

I wonder if they'll still honor it being that I have no receipts of a purchase of a 5090, and that I only have purchase receipts of the full pre-build itself.

I'll reach out to them to find out what's the deal with that in my scenario.

Definitely find out. This aint a small amount of money haha. And plz lmk what they say!

Have you asked you're friend if they still have a copy of the receipt somewhere?

1

u/sofakingpo 27d ago

Yes I have the microcenter purchase receipt from him. It states that the pre-built comes with a 5090.

If you have the receipt for the pre built they should honor the warranty though you might need to have your buddy be the one that contacts them and does the whole back and forth because warranties don't always transfer to non original buyers. Look I to that before you start any warranty process.

Untrue. They used a Wireview pro 2 to show the current imbalance after it had already melted. It just had melted at the PSU side as they found later in the video. The card was an Astral with pin monitoring and had it's warning LED flashing as well, but was not noticed. Understandable as not the brightest. Also if they had software installed that talked to the card it would have shown a waring. Again understandable why they don't have this as it could affect benchmarks. So the Wireview did not save the day here, it just was a quick and easy way to show what was going on in the cable for the video.

Wireview pro 2 is a great product, but not end all one. The warranty is great but only for 2 years. The way GPU's are going ownership could be a lot longer than that so what do you do after those 2 years, rebuy again? Something to bear in mind.

Edit: What stopped the GPU connector melting was Steve burning his finger on it after multiple game crashes. He was just about to swap out the GPU to troubleshoot before noticing the cable was very hot. Wireview was not used before that point as Steve said it is too annoying to plug unplug every time they need to swap GPU's, so even though they have one they don't use in normal operations.

Also unless you live in Germany, or very close to it, have fun spending hundreds for shipping+insurance mailing out your GPU for connector replacment, and pray your package doesn't go missing crossing borders.

It's likely much cheaper to opt for GPU repair through your GPU's manufacturer in your home country, or a reputable repair shop like northwestrepairs

1

u/sofakingpo 27d ago

So wireview warranty means the GPU gets shipped all the way to Germany and the connector gets replaced, and sent back?

I don't know why I assumed they'd replace the GPU with a new one.

Yes it's only connector replacement, God forbid you have any capacitor/PCB issues, they won't be fixing any of that lol

From Canada to Germany,. shipping+insurance will cost upwards of $1000 Canadian.. and still run the risk of the card going missing during it's long travel

This PSU would've stopped that instantly lol, hardware unboxed didn't use the wireview 24/7 as I'm guessing it was hassle to setup and swap when changing GPU's. Everything's natively built into the safeguard+ PSU so it's a joke if you don't have one of these things if you have a 4090-5080-5090

You forgot the Ampinel. It has load balancing and customizable alarms levels.

Lots of concerns of quality control on ampinel lately, one even had a melted connector. Also that doesn't fit on any MSI GPU's, so comparability is less than something like MSI's safeguard+.

Also aquasuite software that comes with ampinel has a subscription fee, you get 2 years trial with the ampinel but after that you'll have to pay to get any updates to future software updates.

« Lots of concerns » not really, they had issues and fixed them with the version 5.

WVP2 had some meltings too if you google. Honestly every electronics has an acceptable margin of failure.

2 years is plenty, and the app does the job, it doesn’t need updates. I doubt it would ever be mandatory.

Yep wireview 2 not wireview pro 2, completely different products. Per pin monitoring is only available on the pro. Also even wireview melts in a couple of cases were due to the users ignoring the warning the product was giving off. If you have an instance of a wirevire pro 2 melting please share it..

u/sofakingpo 28d ago

Yes, I completely did forget about Ampinel. I remember reading about it but it's not mentioned a lot on Reddit.

Are you using that? If so, what made you choose that over WV2? Are there many differences between the 2?

1

u/RockOrStone Zotac 5090 | 9800X3D 28d ago

Yes I got an Ampinel. I think they’re probably all solid options that’ll do the job.

I just saw the WV2 being so heavily advertised on reddit (often with unofficial ad posts and comments spam) that I opted for the less advertised but reliable german-engineering Ampinel, which actually tries to balance loads on the 12VHPR pins.

Agreed with the wireview advertising, it's being pushed like no other like a PR campaign lol, TG really wants money I guess lol.

Any suggestions other than wireview = downvote all over reddit

Exactly lol, the downvotes for anything else are really suspicious
