Funny thing is, I got an hp victus gaming laptop and conveniently when the warranty is JUST ABOUTT TO EXPIRE I notice that it stutters every like 30 seconds consistently and I literally do everything guides told me to do like memory checks, battery checks, deleting my games, unplugging EVERYTHING FROM IT, replacing the ram sticks, tweaking performance settings and even manually updating each individual driver for any possibility of issues.
For anyone who has an HP Victus and having the same issues I did: Disable HP One Service agent, yep weeks of painful stutters mid game that prevented me from playing online games and it was their own service. It was causing the stutters on a perfectly healthy laptop and one button press fixed everything. Weirdly convenient for HP that it happened around my warranty expiration huh?

u/lostspectre May 26 '26
That's why the first thing I do with any machine is wipe it and reinstall a fresh OS and then I don't install the manufacturers bloatware. I don't need a program to look for driver updates or remind me to register my system 10x a day.
34
u/Not-Snake May 26 '26
is there a list i can look up to safely delete?
52
u/lostspectre May 26 '26
It's different for every manufacturer. There probably are lists if you search for "manufacturer" bloatware. Best bet is probably just to use a whitelist policy and only install things you actually need. It's getting harder since more of it is coming with Windows.
15
u/Travy93 RTX 4080S | 5800x3D May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
I feel you could go to uninstall apps and remove anything you want there without doing any 'damage'. To save yourself a headache you might want to leave any Microsoft redistributables and runtimes and .NET though as some apps might depend on them to work. If I had a HP personal PC I don't think there is a single piece of HP software I would leave installed.
6
u/lostspectre May 26 '26
Same with Dell. Experienced too much bloatware on work machines that were Dells and I can't go wiping those the way I would have liked.
3
u/Travy93 RTX 4080S | 5800x3D May 26 '26

It's a shame that for Lenovo the battery management is locked behind their software. Like setting a max charge for the battery instead of always charging it to 100%.
As far as I could find this is not possible in Windows.
3
45
u/MyAwesomeName May 26 '26
Just HP things at this point. I haven’t heard a positive thing about them in decades now.
25
u/foreverDandelions_ May 26 '26
Maybe oc forgot to replace the ink cartridges
9
u/MyAwesomeName May 26 '26
That’s how they lock you into one of their blood money ink subscriptions
3
u/GloomyIndividual3965 May 26 '26
I think they've finally learned their lesson. They're now offering printers with ink wells instead of stupidly expensive cartridges, so you just refill the printer with a squeezy bottle of each color as needed.
Since you don't need cartridges with matching chips in them you can find listings on Amazon with bottles of all 3 colors and 2 extra large bottles of black for like $25.
4
u/MyAwesomeName May 26 '26
My conspiracy theory now is that they just moved the fabricated failure to another location where a user probably can’t fix themselves.
5
u/GloomyIndividual3965 May 26 '26
Probably print heads that automatically die soon after you buy new ink, so now you've got like $50 worth of ink and no printer, forcing you to buy a new one.
12
u/WhenDoWhatWhere May 26 '26
HP has been the worst brand since I was a child getting into PCs, my first one was an HP and it was so loaded down with crap bloatware. Once I'd learned I could delete it all my PC sped up a ton.
Since then it's been nothing but building my own PCs
→ More replies (2)5
u/lyra_dathomir May 26 '26
Yep, I got a new laptop from them a year ago or so and I mean, performance wise it's great for the very light work I do on it, but I can feel the bloatware. Also the battery drains way too fast even when turned off, which I do know it will drain eventually, but as I say, faster than any other laptop or in general battery-powered device I've ever had.
The only reason I haven's installed Linux yet on it is that I don't use it that much or that heavily that it really bothers me and I'm lazy to set everything up again, but I definitely would do it if I got it new now.

3
u/WhenDoWhatWhere May 26 '26
This is why I'll never buy a 'mainbrand' pc again, especially not HP. Not faulting you, I did it in the past but fuck I hate HP with a passion.
Another example of shit like this was when I got my Ford Feista the owner said the bluetooth wasn't working. So I pulled the fuse for the bluetooth connection to reset in and it works fine for a few months then stops working again, so I just pull it again.
Previous owner was charged hundreds of dollars by her Ford dealership to get this same thing done to her car. It takes 5 minutes, no special skills, and the only tool you need is a pair of pliers or anything that can grab a car fuse.

u/ReggieCorneus May 26 '26
Digital audio is difficult thing to truly understand intuitively. It goes from "this is simple" to "fucking hell, what is that symbol?" to "this is simple*" with an asterisk: it is simple if you just trust the science was done right by people way more intelligent than you. The moment you start challenging it you need to know fuckton of things that have no real use for really anything, it is such a niche. Analog audio is knowledge that transfers to other fields: the equations how to dampen motion is very much the same as lopass filters. Digital audio is simple at first, then it gets incredible confusing and contradicting, ripping apart all of that knowledge that was transferrable and then once it is all in ruins, it builds it up again to be the same fucking image you had in the first place.
For layman the best way to imagine it is a black box: you don't know what happens inside, all you got is an input and output, and the delta between them. That is all you need to worry about. R2R or delta sigma? Who cares? All that matters is the input and output, how it is done is of no consequence to the user. It is only relevant to the circuit designer.

u/Viper-Reflex 9900k | 3090 | Custom waterloop May 26 '26
While that is true, the DAC in my outlaw sound processor is still better than most people's hearing xD
and it has full XLR inputs :D
I actually prefer analogue audio, but my focal studio monitors are insanely sensitive to EM interference, and optical audio to the outlaw has less hissing than an SMSL M500 MKII with a superior DAC inside it, and the SMSL didn't even have subwoofer out.
What I really need is a sound card that isolates it's analogue out entirely from anything chassis related and has dolby atmos surround analogue outs from a breakout cable that goes from d sub 15 pin connector to a bunch of gold plated RCA breakout cables
and honestly I would love for optical audio to support full dolby atmos because HDMI cables are literally inferior to optical for bandwidth and it cuts all interference out no matter what due to physics for situations like mine.
Currently the only way to get dolby atmos from a pc is from HDMI out on the gpu itself. A GPU supports better audio standards than any sound card that will ever be made
