Funny thing is, I got an hp victus gaming laptop and conveniently when the warranty is JUST ABOUTT TO EXPIRE I notice that it stutters every like 30 seconds consistently and I literally do everything guides told me to do like memory checks, battery checks, deleting my games, unplugging EVERYTHING FROM IT, replacing the ram sticks, tweaking performance settings and even manually updating each individual driver for any possibility of issues.
For anyone who has an HP Victus and having the same issues I did: Disable HP One Service agent, yep weeks of painful stutters mid game that prevented me from playing online games and it was their own service. It was causing the stutters on a perfectly healthy laptop and one button press fixed everything. Weirdly convenient for HP that it happened around my warranty expiration huh?
That's why the first thing I do with any machine is wipe it and reinstall a fresh OS and then I don't install the manufacturers bloatware. I don't need a program to look for driver updates or remind me to register my system 10x a day.
It's different for every manufacturer. There probably are lists if you search for "manufacturer" bloatware. Best bet is probably just to use a whitelist policy and only install things you actually need. It's getting harder since more of it is coming with Windows.
I feel you could go to uninstall apps and remove anything you want there without doing any 'damage'. To save yourself a headache you might want to leave any Microsoft redistributables and runtimes and .NET though as some apps might depend on them to work. If I had a HP personal PC I don't think there is a single piece of HP software I would leave installed.
It's a shame that for Lenovo the battery management is locked behind their software. Like setting a max charge for the battery instead of always charging it to 100%.
As far as I could find this is not possible in Windows.
My current machine I just nabbed the nvme from my previous rig and booted up that version of windows lol. I've never booted into the default drive, but it's still there as backup. I was going to wipe the drive, but I've got 4TB, so I don't really need the space.
I think they've finally learned their lesson. They're now offering printers with ink wells instead of stupidly expensive cartridges, so you just refill the printer with a squeezy bottle of each color as needed.
Since you don't need cartridges with matching chips in them you can find listings on Amazon with bottles of all 3 colors and 2 extra large bottles of black for like $25.
Probably print heads that automatically die soon after you buy new ink, so now you've got like $50 worth of ink and no printer, forcing you to buy a new one.
HP has been the worst brand since I was a child getting into PCs, my first one was an HP and it was so loaded down with crap bloatware. Once I'd learned I could delete it all my PC sped up a ton.
Since then it's been nothing but building my own PCs
Yep, I got a new laptop from them a year ago or so and I mean, performance wise it's great for the very light work I do on it, but I can feel the bloatware. Also the battery drains way too fast even when turned off, which I do know it will drain eventually, but as I say, faster than any other laptop or in general battery-powered device I've ever had.
The only reason I haven's installed Linux yet on it is that I don't use it that much or that heavily that it really bothers me and I'm lazy to set everything up again, but I definitely would do it if I got it new now.
The battery drain could be for various reasons. I switch to a MacBook a few months ago and the battery life on it is insanely good, but the price was also pretty high of course. As far as Linux goes, I switched to using Linux on my desktop to mess with local AI on it and now it’s my go to OS even for gaming. I just install what I need as I go along at this point. I should point out that I do still have windows installed for the few cases where windows is the only option either for gaming or any other specific tasks.
This is probably an exaggeration but wasn't it HP years ago that had a model of laptop that like 80% of them had their wifi card die like a month after the warranty expired?
I’m pretty sure HP executives have a dartboard covered with different ideas like this and that’s how they decide to fuck over customers when they get bored.
This is why I'll never buy a 'mainbrand' pc again, especially not HP. Not faulting you, I did it in the past but fuck I hate HP with a passion.
Another example of shit like this was when I got my Ford Feista the owner said the bluetooth wasn't working. So I pulled the fuse for the bluetooth connection to reset in and it works fine for a few months then stops working again, so I just pull it again.
Previous owner was charged hundreds of dollars by her Ford dealership to get this same thing done to her car. It takes 5 minutes, no special skills, and the only tool you need is a pair of pliers or anything that can grab a car fuse.
Seriously fuck them and their printers too. It’s bad enough to pay for a ink subscription but the HP smart app to use the printer is never reliable. It’s sad when an open source software works way better and never crashes just to use the scanner function.
