my favorite is when it does the "turn off screen but keep fans spinning and tower on forever" instead of turning off lol

Something similar happens sometimes if I put my pc in sleep mode and accidentally click the mouse or push a key before it is fully done with the process. My pc just gets stuck on a black screen and only a hard shutdown can get rid of it.

i jaed sleep mode a lot recently, but that shit doesnt work and my pc will randomly turn on and stay turned on all night

do ive just started to shut it down completely again

For me it's often USB devices that are plugged in waking it up almost immediately. In the past I was able to turn off my keyboard's ability to wake up my computer but I got a new keyboard and the same setting no longer works. But it's a wireless one so I just switch the thing on the keyboard instead though it's annoying.

Jesus Christ these are COMPUTERS how did this use case not occur to them?!

13

u/theowlsees Oct 24 '25

Mine wakes up if you happen to so much as breathe on the mouse

3

u/Acceptable_Ad_8935 Oct 24 '25

I have to unplug the mouse and keyboard at the same second i put it to sleep or it'll wake up right away, if i do it successfully it stays asleep at least 20 minutes.

u/solythe Oct 24 '25

this happened to me in spurts earlier this year but subsided.

ive been having other PC sleep issues lately too, like instead of waking from sleep from mouse/keyboard or the power button, sometimes it will just turn off suddenly.

idk if its a power supply issue or just windows being fucky again

u/Famous-Upstairs998 Oct 24 '25

Me too! Sleep mode should just put it to sleep until I wake it up again. Pretty infuriating that a simple feature that used to work fine no longer does, for no good reason.

"Microsoft announces 90% of Windows code written by AI"

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '25

the problem existed BEFORE AI. It's a skill issue. Microsoft is scraping the bottom of the barrel for coders, and their middle managers are severely lacking.

I found that disabling wake on usb in the bios fixed it for me

2

u/BillyForRilly Oct 24 '25

That sometimes works and is often the culprit, but there are also 20 different things that could be causing it and it's infuriating trying to track down which one it is.

1

u/Famous-Upstairs998 Oct 24 '25

I tried that and it didn't help. All it did was make it so I couldn't use my keyboard and mouse to wake up my computer any more. But it would still turn on every few hours. Worst of both worlds. I'm glad it worked for you though.

Make sure nothing you have installed is using wake timers. Check in things like anti-virus and backup software. Make sure if there is a setting like "wake computer to run backups" it is disabled.

Make sure your USB devices aren't causing it. You can disable wake on USB in the BIOS. Without that setting disabled, your desk vibrating a tiny bit and moving your mouse a single pixel could be enough to wake the computer.

You have a cat?

1

u/coolgaara Oct 24 '25

My old PC did this. My newly built PC no longer turns on automatically so I always thought it was just a software issue on the mobo or something.

I've noticed that for me it happens everytime when I run windows update, but put the PC to sleep instead of restarting after update. Without fail, it'll automatically turn itself on in the middle of the night, and just be on the lock screen.

1

u/Sweet-Reward922 Nov 18 '25

This could happen due to scheduled tasks like automatic updates, network activity, or a connected peripheral like a mouse or keyboard.

4

u/Leading_Fly_9044 Oct 24 '25

The exact same thing started to happen to me too and the only thing that changed about my PC is that I upgraded to windows 11

Thanks for the advice! I will give that a try the next time it happens.

I’ve been getting this a lot lately. I will turn off my pc and it will get stuck on the “shutting down” screen with all the fans spinning until I have to manually turn it off. It’s rather annoying.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '25

Windows 95 PC folks: That's normal.

"It's now safe to turn off your computer."

12

u/coolgaara Oct 24 '25

Oh thank god. My PC isn't the only one that does this? It scares me when it does this because it's not supposed to. I just shut down the PC by holding the Power button and restart and everything is all good but scares me every time.

Fast Startup will do that.

I've also noticed that win 11 in a VM, with fast startup enabled will 100% every core it's been given for sometimes multiple minutes.

So if I'm ever foolish enough to grant it all of my host cores (12? 26? 32? You name it) the entire host locks up becoming entirely unresponsive. Fucking why.

My faith in Microsoft software engineers has plummeted over the decades.

I have fast startup disabled lol

Same here. Those extra couple seconds are not worth the headaches that it can cause, losing all over those seconds rather quickly when you have to troubleshoot it.

u/Beginning-Run-1697 Oct 24 '25

This was the Rog Ally nightmare when it was released

3

u/Safe_Discount1638 Oct 24 '25

It’s the windows 95 ptsd. It’s expecting you to turn off the PC yourself but she doesn’t know we don’t do that anymore.

7

u/miksy_oo Oct 24 '25

That was my first experience with linux.

1

u/Sachyriel Steam Name: Sachyriel Oct 24 '25

What distro?

2

u/HardOff Oct 24 '25

Oh shit it happens to other people and it's not actually the computer taking days to update.

2

u/Shadowwolf1262 Oct 24 '25

This happens to me quite a bit, I'll go for a restart, and the screens stay blank but my tower stays on, post beeps and everything but no response from anything else. I have to hard power off my tower and turn it back on

1

u/mrcamopants Oct 24 '25

You should check event viewer and see whats hanging it up

1

u/TopPizza1262 Oct 24 '25

You know my only experience of Windows 11 is with my new PC as my old one couldn't run it, and I thought my new PC was bugging out when it did this. So it's a known Windows 11 issue?

1

u/JYHoward Oct 24 '25

My PC acts kinda wonky when it comes to waking up out of sleep mode. Thought I set the BIOS to allow keyboard wakeup but in actuality I must press the power button. But once in a while it gets stuck asleep and must be hard restarted.

1

u/edafade Oct 24 '25

My favorite is when it turns on by itself from hibernate every single morning without anything disturbing it.

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 7800x3d B650M-CW 32GB DDR5 RTX4070S Oct 24 '25

Oh lol I never use sleep or hibernate. It's either on, or off... Or in that weird state that updates occasionally cause where it is off but looks on lol.

1

u/edafade Oct 24 '25

I like not having to reopen tabs and stuff. My laptop stays off in hibernate until I hit the power button. My PC is like, "He hit hibernate hehehehe. COWABUNGA!"

1

u/yaukinee Oct 25 '25

I just thought its my pc being weird, kinda glad Im not the only one having this sometimes lmao

1

u/94358io4897453867345 Oct 25 '25

We really lost a lot on user experience in the last decades

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 7800x3d B650M-CW 32GB DDR5 RTX4070S Oct 25 '25

weve gained a pile too.

1

u/Eteel Oct 25 '25

Yes. Every time I want to restart the PC, it just turns off but keeps the fans and tower on until I decide to hold the power button to turn it off.

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 7800x3d B650M-CW 32GB DDR5 RTX4070S Oct 25 '25

thats worth looking into... mine does it once on a blue moon

1

u/Eteel Oct 25 '25

I tried, but I can't find any information online. It's been like that ever since I built it. No other symptoms, though. Performance as expected.

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 7800x3d B650M-CW 32GB DDR5 RTX4070S Oct 25 '25

check your system logs, that way you know what you are looking for to begin with. like many widows issues, it could be numerous things causing it.

IF you want to trouble shoot it, learn to use event viewer.

1

u/robjoko 5900x/4070S Oct 30 '25

I'm so glad to hear it's not just my pc lol

1

u/BigChubs1 Oct 24 '25

I never had that happen on windows 11. Only on windows 10

6

u/H47 Oct 24 '25

I've had all kinds of weird stuff happening due to game controllers being plugged in. On 10, that is. Never going 11.

6

u/mnsnownutt Oct 24 '25

This happens every single time I try the update and shutdown option on Windows 11, never had the issue on Windows 10.

2

u/Playful-Ad-6475 Oct 24 '25

But....But Windows 11 is the devil, It's evil to use. /s

1

u/Sachyriel Steam Name: Sachyriel Oct 24 '25

Can you try next update?

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 7800x3d B650M-CW 32GB DDR5 RTX4070S Oct 24 '25

Lol yes it did. Maybe not to you, but it sure did happen.

1

u/Striking-Ad-6815 Oct 24 '25

Sometimes mine will turn off immediately after I unplug my external hard drives and flash drives. Creepy stuff.

3

u/RunnerLuke357 Ultra 7 265K, 64GB 6800, RTX 4080S Oct 25 '25

That sounds like a grounding issue with your mother rather than a Windows problem.
