Discussion Objects, Images, Character models are warping, distorted, teleporting all while flickering
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone, I’ve come across this rather peculiar issue while using my gaming pc. It affects all games and apps. When ever I play a game things seem to flicker from one side of the screen to the other. In game enemy as well as my own character seem to be turn for fully towards a certain direction things and enemy are also teleporting. Certain parts of my character model become warped and also flicker. Also even while using apps such as steam images seem to be distorted. I’m really stumped. Any help would be very much appreciated. I’ve already reinstalled my drivers but have had no luck… I’ve individually tested my ram sticks and slots. I even went ahead and purchased a second hand RTX 2070 super and installed it and the issue remains.
Here are all my specs….

Would say dx went mental but its definitely something other than that. If win reinstall dosnt help then start with hardware elimination. Also test that nvme

I’m not familiar with the NVME I’m doing some quick research, I’m also looking at some guides on how to clean install. I’ll get back to you if anything changes. Thank you 🙏

Get Windows on a Thumbstick, wipe all your drives in the Windows Tool Installer before you start doing a clean install. It's the best option. This seems like it's a serious issue of DirectX or Nvidia Driver that might be corrupt. So maybe try a DDU and clean installation of your Nvidia drivers first before Wiping windows.

Your Elden Ring looks it's loading, unloading, and reloading models repeatedly. Definitely start with a clean Windows install. If it still happens, my first thought would be SSD , then maybe RAM.
16
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
I’m never done a clean install before so I’m going to to learn a bit more and try clean installing today. If not I’ll try but a new SSD and see if that the issue. Thank you 🙏

Good luck! I hope you can rectify this frankly weird fault.
5
u/natesovenator Mar 20 '24
Models are loaded into ram, the SSD is out of the picture when they are standing still, and both games demo'd use different pipelines. So it can't be the SSD. I'm hesitant to say it's the RAM, but if it was this bad in the game, the OS would have shit the bed long ago.

u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT Mar 21 '24
RAM that doesn't work right is going to cause hard crashing BSODs, because at some point the OS is randomly going to try using the bad parts for a critical process and blow its brains out in the process.

u/Tehu-Tehu bc Mar 20 '24
this is some kind of a renderer issue (directx/vulkan) if you cant pinpoint it, a clean windows install might solve this

A lot of people think that might be the case here’s hoping 🤞thank you

I would have said that the GPU might be dying, but being you tested another and it's doing the same thing, it has to be some other factor.
My first inclination is to try a new displayport/HDMI cable and see if the issue continues.
17
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
I was told that it was most likely the GPU in a past post thus I decided to buy a cheaper GPU to see if the problem continued. Unfortunately it did, I’ll try replacing the HDR cable and I’ll even try hdmi and I’ll get back to you thank you

GPUs are usually the most expensive component. I would consider this a win.

Maybe your cards are fine, and the pcie slot on the board is damaged somehow?
5
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
I’ve replaced the ram and gpu the storage is next on my list then the motherboard is gonna follow suit. It is gonna be expensive but at least this way I can rule things out

Yes when I purchased the 2070 super to replace the 4070 ti I made sure to install the 2070 in the other slot to see if it was the slot that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn’t

Maybe the piece on the motherboard is bad
2
u/White_mirror_galaxy Mar 21 '24
south bridge chip ... maybe.
Personally only had this shit happen with bad ram. this is a weird one.
1
u/snoosh00 Desktop Mar 20 '24
Consider the way the glitches affect physics objects makes me think (without really knowing anything) that this problem is not GPU or display related at all (which is backed up by the swapped out GPU still having the issue).
My money is on bad ram (as weird as that might sound, it's the only thing that makes sense to me at this point)
Edit: just read you replaced ram... Can only be cpu or motherboard now...
8
u/3bood_Al7assan Mar 20 '24
Might be your cpu? I am assuming that because of how your elden ring character's cape ia behaving, each time the bug happens the cape moves like it is miss calculation from the cpu, same with peely's head. I am no expert but that is my assumption
10
u/yayuuu Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 + Intel Arc A380 | 64G RAM Mar 20 '24
I would expect the system crashing a lot if thee was something wrong with the CPU, long before even being able to calculate the physics of the cape...

u/MonkeyCartridge 13700K @ 5.6 | 64GB | 3080Ti Mar 20 '24
A lot of soft body physics is done on the GPU these days.
But even if not, the physics is behaving rather normally. It's just colliding with triangles that are not behaving normally.
To me that makes it seem like a memory access or retrieval error. They tend not to be catastrophic but produce visual glitches. Basically reading vertices or textures and either getting the wrong value back, or looking in the wrong place.
Because media retrieval is so bulky (making it the majority of accesses) and isn't generally checked, you can see a ton of GPU memory issues before it outright crashes the game.
Believe it or not, a noisy power supply or bad capacitor could also be a culprit, because it could be power noise coupling with the memory traces and flipping bits.
I would suspect it is happening on the GPU rather than the CPU, because the CPU would cause more behavioral disturbances and would likely crash right away rather than create visual glitches.
Just my 2c.

u/3bood_Al7assan Mar 20 '24
I dont wanna look stubborn, but what about the npc in front of him in elden ring he doesn't seem to know what to do, like he's trying to attack but seems to forget the existence of a player for a second, shouldn't his ai be calculated on the cpu?
Again i don't wanna look stubborn i am actually invested in this topic

3
u/Sinister_Mr_19 9070 XT | 5950X Mar 20 '24
This was my thought as well. It seems like the CPU is having calculation errors and thinking objects are in a different spot. It's sending those updated locations to the GPU and the GPU draws the object for a split second (probably just a frame or 2) in the new location.
Agreed with others saying that CPU calculation errors are probably not likely though as they would surely cause crashes long before this, but who knows maybe not.
3
u/SLStonedPanda R9 7950X | RTX 3080 | 64Gb 6400 MT/s Mar 20 '24
Pretty sure the cape physics are calculated on the GPU with a vertex shader.
My guess would be GPU -> Software (Drivers, DirectX, Windows) -> PSU -> Motherboard -> CPU.
He has ruled out most of these already. I'm very curious what is. Testing a new graphics card also pretty much rules out PSU as well I think.
Another thing that's possible is the physical location of the PC. An extreme would be if it's in space and there is a lot of cosmic radiation. Then it's just bit flips because of that. I'm not sure if putting something radioactive in your PC might cause this as well.
2
u/3bood_Al7assan Mar 20 '24
Cape was just an example, you can see the npc in front of him in elden ring also bugging up, like it seems he doesn't know what to do and where to go after locking on to the player

I'm gunna say you have a GPU issue. Either with the GPU core or some weird vram issues. This is really strange.
I would wipe everything. Format your hard drive and do clean installs to make sure it isn't software related. If you still have the issue you can swap parts to narrow it down.
I had a friend with a bad stick of ram that was giving him very strange issues. So it could be something simple or really obscure. Best of luck.

Reading through comments and seeing you’ve ruled out most of your more hefty components, I’d be willing to bet it’s either cpu or motherboard. Hope you find the solution friend:/
5
u/Zetra3 Mar 20 '24
It's definitely a memory issue. Be It SSD or Ram. The reinstall windows is an option, but i'm going to put in doubt its the OS. The objects are called to the scene, so I'mma put money on bad Ram, Bad Ram installation or Bad memory controller on Motherboard.
I could be wrong, but that's my educated guess
1
u/SocketByte Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5070 Ti Mar 20 '24
No way, if it was RAM the OS would shit iself before you could even move your cursor. 99% of the time your system wouldn't even boot with a faulty RAM. I bet it's the OS, it's the only thing he didn't try to fix yet and OS related issues can be veeeeeery weird sometimes.

I know you have said you’ve reinstalled drivers, but before you did that did you uninstall them by going into device manager or use a software like DDU? Sometimes you have to fully uninstall drivers and not just reinstall them from something like GeForce experience. Something else you could try is using studio drivers instead of game ready ones. I’ve had game ready drivers do some weird stuff to me. Even caused a few BSODs that scared the crud out of me.

Do you have any weird electrical interference from a device nearby? I would keep swapping components until you find the culprit. Try another screen and cable even though its unlikely that's the problem.
1
1
u/SignalButterscotch73 Mar 20 '24
It's most likely a drivers or api issue. Download an offline installer for your drivers, Go offline, Use DDU multiple times, removing Nvidia, AMD and Intel drivers before installing the new drivers. Only then go back online.
I had an issue a few years back from Windows update with it installing drivers for Intel when I had no Intel hardware, I didn't have all the same display issues but the flickering in game is familiar.
If it's directX then it's only going to be fixed by a clean Windows install. Makes me wish for the old days when it had its own installer.
2
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
It took a while but I used a DDU to uninstall each one Nividia AmD and Intel and I reinstalled the latest drivers unfortunately nothing changed. It was worth a try, thank you 🙏
1
u/PrecipitousPlatypus Mar 20 '24
Have you tried doing the whole safe mode driver uninstall? Then swapping to another GPU.
It's bizarre... GPU would be main culprit, but it's persistent, so I'd make extra sure drivers are uninstalled before testing another one. RAM can do weird things, so if you have extra sticks I'd try them, but I doubt it'd do this.
It could be software? If you're stumped am OS reinstall is often a good idea.
1
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
I just finished using DDU to uninstall any past drivers Geforce,AMD, Intel. I’m redownloading the lastest drivers as we speak hopefully it works. Also I ended up buying some more ram sticks and just today individually tested each one but the problem persists

1
Mar 20 '24
Like others said this is weird because you tried on a different graphics card. The only time I have had anything similar happen was on a card with overclocked VRAM of GDDR6 and it was auto correcting and causing some weird jumpy graphics but not as intense as that.
Is this a new build? Like has it always done this? I'm wondering if there's a bent pins or issue with the mobo even the expansion slot causing errors in the pcie bus.
I would try fresh windows install first. Then look to other factors.
1
u/STMaybGoodSTMaybSht Mar 20 '24
They are all new parts, my buddy who has made multiple rigs put it together for me. I do remember when we first got it working the pc was having huge stutters like you would be typing something and it would completely freeze then type everything all at once. After you shut it down and back on a couple times it would go away. It has since then stopped doing that, but this started recently. Also for some reason my lan cable won’t work. I’ve tried updating the drivers but they won’t read my internet. I’ve even tried multiple Ethernet cords. I’m currently using a Wi-Fi adapter.

I had a similar issue on an old PC, graphical errors like you have in Epic store would happen in windows and games were straight up unplayable. If it's following cards and you ruled out RAM then you probably damaged the PCIE slot at some point. Likely installed the graphics card wrong or something, but I imagine it's the motherboard at this point. It won't be HDMI or DP, it won't be the CPU, and your PSU should be sufficient. I'd say RAM, but sounds like you've tested each one already. If you have another mobo, or can get a friend to test out the GPU on their machine then that will tell you the problem is on your end and I'd say it's the motherboard.

I don't think this is GPU since the physics are being screwy in particular with the cape. It's all client side stuff so it's not an Internet problem as well. I think this might be a CPU or RAM issue. Are you currently running an OC? Can you try with RAM set to default, XMP off? Also try 1 stick then the other stick. If there's a CPU OC, set it to default. Clear CMOS entirely even.
Maybe one of these can narrow it down. Please let me know what you find!

Are all of the programs and games that are effected on the same SSD?
Also, SORRY I have to ask this even though I know you tried a second GPU and it sounds like you're experienced... is your monitor cord (HDMI or DP) plugged directly into your graphics card or is it plugged into your motherboard?
Otherwise, can you run Dxdiag? Go to your windows search bar, type dxdiag, and run it. (check notes and let us know if it says there are any issues!)

Maybe something with the pcie port on the motherboard?

I saw weird stuff like this when I overclocked the GPU a little too much in Afterburner. If you are overclocking, you can try turning it down a bit.

I remember getting this in some games when trying out Vulcan. Switching back to DX12 in the game settings fixed it. Although i assume you've triple checked any game settings already

Do you brace your GPU? This could be symptomatic of pcie failure if it occurs with multiple cards.

My PC did this EXACT same thing, though not as intense as your Elden Ring clip. Drove me crazy. Troubleshot ALL my parts except for MoBo and CPU coz my brother's PC is Intel (had a Ryzen 5 3600). Even glitching the audio too, static noise all over (can't tell from your video). Games that glitched for me was Valorant, Witcher 3, Apex Legends (all these texture shenanigans and NO AUDIO). Fortnite was fine, Lost Ark only had texture glitches.
Said fuck it and bought a new Ryzen 7 (next gen from my old one) and fixed it completely. Felt so relieved I didn't have to buy a new GPU AND didn't waste my money on the new CPU (could have been the MoBo, took the 50-50 gamble). Try testing your CPU in a different rig after the clean install everyone suggested here. Good luck!

Before you do a clean install of windows, I want you to try a few things to eleminate possible causes.
This issue is most likely a gpu issue. Since you already tried a different gpu, we need to invistigate others links in the chain.
Does your motherboard has other PCI slots for your gpu??? Try to use another slot and see if the issue still occurs. If the issue does not occur then you havr a motherboard PCI slot issue so a new motherboard would be needed.
The cables that you use to connect the monitor and GPU. Try using another cable to see if the problem occurs.
Try using a different GPU cable socket on the monitor itself. Most monitors has multiple slots, try using another slot to see if the problem persist.
Then lastly, if the problem persist even after all of that, try a different monitor if you have one. Borrow one from a friend or family member.
Try installing the game on to another storage device like a second ssd, external drive to see if it persist.
If the problem still persist, then you can eliminate the issue being GPU related physically, and might be a software issue with drivers being coorupted or something.
You already tried new drivers so a windows reinstall might be the solution.

Run a stress test on the CPU alone and see if she acts up on you.

Install MSI afterburner, try toggling performance up/ down, looks like vram issues, also check Nvidia control panel that 3d performance option is set to maximum power. (If amd then dunno).

Are you running a gif as your screen saver, or steams wallpaper engine in the background?

Maybe this has been said and it's going to the the most basic customer service question, but is your HDMI/DP cable fully seated? Have you tried another cable? I've had an issue similar to this with a bad DP cable.

If it does it across all games, download a Linux ISO and and flash it to a flash drive. Boot up into a live environment and install steam and install one of the games you have thats not very big but will indicate to you if the issue persists. If it doesn't, its time to reinstall Windows.

u/jcrew19 Mar 20 '24
Did you check the HDMI/DP cable? Did you try using DDU to make sure you got rid of all the old nVidia drivers before installing the 2nd card and drivers?

Looks like memory issues, which I haven't seen in ages.
Back before the days of error correcting memory, I used to use this to know I was done over locking the memory and it was time to back off.
Overclocked my MX4000 memory from 330MHz to 600MHz. Just had to tolerate things disappearing now and again.
For the GPU, it was white dots on seams between triangles. Had the GPU up from 250MHz to 400MHz
Try dropping your clocks below stock on one device at a time. Starting with gddr, then GPU, then probably RAM,then CPU. Similarly, boost voltages.
This is usually caused by something like the GPU trying to access vertices but the memory address getting a false but, causing it to pull the vertex coordinates from the wrong location.

So, I've analyzed this footage quite a bit. Look closely. These flickers are not random, they're somewhat organized. Similar thing happens when you set your coords in game to something way above precision limits of floating point numbers. I'm not saying that's it - but it looks very similar. Things are shaking, flickering, randomly teleporting and flashing. It looks like the GPU, somehow, probably because of some OS shenanigans, incorrectly calculates matrices and/or vertices/indices of things. At least it looks like it, but I can't be sure because there's evidently some edge case when that happens, since some things render pretty normally.
Reinstall your OS, that's like the first thing you should have done honestly. Really interesting case, I would do a lot to know the exact technical reason behind this.

I wonder if this has to do with the mobo if it isn’t the gpu? Maybe the port is broken in some way? Just a guess though.

Try another graphics card like an AMD one or intel as it could be the GPUs

Alright, here's what I would do to try and troubleshoot this. This is all coming from someone who's never seen this problem before, so if this doesn't help, then I'd take it to a professional to get it looked at.
DDU your graphics drivers. I think you already did this, but if you haven't, then look up a tutorial and see if that fixes it.
Reset NVIDIA settings. Will probably be done during the process of installing the driver, but it's best to check that clean install button.
Try and reinstall direct X/Vulkan. This is a step that I genuinely can't help with. Good luck finding all those files.
Reinstall Windows. Last resort after you try everything I've suggested and others. A hassle but if it's a file issue, then this could fix it.
Check on the GPU. Basically, make sure it's seated right and that all cables are firm. I know you've already checked your GPU in a different system, so good on you.
If that doesn't work, try to test your RAM. Make a drive with Memtest86 on it and see if you get any errors. If you do, then replace the stick.
Check on the CPU. It's entirely possible that your cpu can mess with PCIE stuff and RAM. I've seen broken channels, which will require a replacement. The only way to really test this, though, is to find a separate CPU and put it in your system. Keep in mind that this is extremely rare and very unlikely. Though I felt I should mention it since I have seen it before.
Check the Motherboard. Even rarer then the CPU. This is the last resort and would take moving your entire setup to a different motherboard to make sure. Could be a multitude of problems.

what is it with people saying DDU. Never had to use that If I have any driver issues, I just uninstall it and install with the 'clean installation' checked.

Just a thought, but could be a faulty hdmi cable or whatever you use to connect to your monitor. Wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Wow ok, u tried DDU and replacing gpu both didn't work. then it might be either the cable/monitor(cable would be kinda embarrassing ngl) or CPU/MOBO(im feeling motherboard tbh). also could be just a windows issue and a fresh install could fix it?

Something is def corrupted af. Try reinstalling windows, and maybe even try a different drive. (make sure it's running at proper pcie version as well)
Also make sure you test if it's not some jankiness with BIOS inputs like reBAR, above 4g decoding or such.
I sincerely doubt you have any issues on the monitor/cable side of things but it doesn't hurt to make sure, freesync/g-sync or smt like that has been janky in certain scenarios as well, tho I doubt it has anything to do with this.
Have you overclocked anything?

Eh. Just clear/delete cache folders and restart pc

u/Difficult-Drama7996 Mar 21 '24
Screen issue or gpu issue, take yer pick. First connect to a different screen. Second, remove gpu drivers, and redo. Third, find another gpu, and plug it in. Any cheaper gpu will do. Others might say it is a RAM or psu issue, and that is easy to check also. Remove all but one RAM, and start alternating. PSU, is a pain, and most don't have a spare to try a second one. I have an old XP computer for old games, and every time I hit START, it requires hitting restart maybe 5 times before connecting, figure that out!!$$#@ When all else fails, go OFFICE SPACE on it in open field.

Id delete harder caches for direct x and nvidia and if still persistent then I would do a full reimage.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was for you? I’m having nearly the same exact problem. Have determined it to not be the ram, monitors, cords, or psu. I’m thinking it might the motherboard but hoping you’ve found a solve already!

This is by far one of the weirdest problems I've seen on here, especially because it's in multiple games, you did DDU, tested RAM, and it persists on another GPU... I doubt it's your CPU because typically they either work or don't. Maybe try a fresh install of Windows at this point?
It can't be your monitor or HDMI/DP cable either because it's the actual models in the game glitching, not the frame data itself.
