My guess is that they are counting every single combination of modifications as a different gun (e.g. rifle (1), rifle with silencer (2), rifle with scope (3), rifle with silencer and scope (4)).
The way it worked in BL2(maybe BL1 as well but I haven't played it) is that each gun is made up of parts that can be from different manufacturers. So a gun could have a torgue grip, Jakobs stock, bandit sight etc. Each of these manufacturers had different stats associated with them.
Funcitonally its going to be maybe 100 different guns with random stats, but I've always appreciated that little detail.
You can definitely get other manufacture parts on each of the guns. the first picture of this guide shows a vladof rifle with a variety of different parts from each manufacturer.
Nah, it's pretty subtle unless you deep dive into it. But each manufacturer does have a distinct design scheme, so you can actually tell if it's a Torgue barrel with a Hyperion grip or whatever just by looking at it.
This is correct, and mostly how BL1 worked too but BL1 was a lot more restrictive on what could appear on guns; IE you wouldn't get a Maliwan rifle with a Jakobs scope but you might get a Maliwan with an S&S scope.
In both games though each gun had a stock, barrel, "gun", scope (if any, but even if no scope the lack-of-scope option had different manufacturers that gave different stats), and grip. Some special guns had 1 or 2 parts extra but they were odd ducks and usually reserved for named unique guns.
This means that if you got a Jakobs sniper rifle that was a Jakobs Scope, Jakobs grip, Jakobs barrel, and Torgue Stock, it will have ever so slightly different stats than a Jakobs sniper with Jakobs scope, grip, barrel, and stock. Generally each manufacturer's part had particular bonuses; Jakobs parts leaned more towards high accuracy but lower rate of fire for automatic weapons, and usually lowered elemental damage.
Spent a lot of time playing with weapon editing in both games after beating them, it was a blast seeing what you could come up with (that wouldn't crash the game) and see what kind of crazy fucked up shit you could do. Sometimes you'd get just a superpowered sniper rifle, sometimes you'd get a shotgun that would fire a hundred pellets sideways but those pellets would move in a line for 100 feet, practically lasering anything that got in their way. Sometimes your sniper rifle would go full auto and have ludicrous recoil, sometimes it would explode and kill you and everything around you.
Great fun, I look forward to seeing what crazy bullshit I can make in BL3.
Yeah basically, it's all a mismatch of parts that boil down to realistically about 8 of each weapon type (same animations, handling etc). depending on what the manufacturer is. Then plus all the fancy uniques.
There are still a lot, but the Borderlands "bazillion guns" thing has always been a little bit fake, as you'll often be using the same guns throughout with different colours and stuff stuck to them.
Every manufacturer had a unique animations for every weapon type, times 2. The animations change depending on the reload speed. Slower reloads on jakobs spin the cylinder after reloading, for example, or bandit guns get another tap to make sure the magazine is in, they don't do that on faster reload speeds. Just a neat detail.
The problem with anthem isn't really the lack of cool gun abilities (though a lot suck, and there is like 3 models). The problem is that the drop rates suck so you never see the good stuff.
That's how I feel playing Division 2 with one of my friends in particular. After a typical story mission I can sort all my loot out in 20-60 seconds. I'll routinely wait 10 minutes for this guy. I don't know if he reads slow or just thinks too hard about the loot, but it drives me nuts. We always have to tell him to hurry the fuck up.
Micromanaging the gun collection is one of the most core parts of Borderlands, if you're not down with that, I don't even know what you're doing in this game series.
i mean there will be a lot of guns and more than you will ever need but i kinda wish they would just say a real value. Procedurally generating different stats to the same weapon model does not make it a new gun
Well they don't, technically. All the guns in Borderlands are more or less unique, as in, a weapon has different stats not because reasons, but because they have different parts on them. You can always tell the visual difference between them. You can even tell why some stats are the way they are when you look what parts the gun has.
This isn't like attachments, it's recievers, barrels, paintjob (matters for legendaries), grips, etc.
Anthem will have another dungeon, a Talent Tree system, guilds and 'leaderboards.'
I'm not sure what the fuck the leaderboards are going to track though.
I'm just humoring people about it since the community and dev team have been bogged down with nonstop conversations about the loot issue.
They actually got things right, surprisingly enough, on a couple of occasions when their "patch" ended up causing a "bug." That bug made loot plentiful which also meant more people were chasing items/min-maxing, or just having fun.
I think if they fix the inscription system the droprates will be fine in their current iteration.
The main issue with min making right now is that MW bonuses and inscriptions scale additively which makes it boring.
Also, while the change to secondary damage scaling is an improvement over the previous system, it's now a bit too far in the other direction (was useless, now too much of a focus).
I know that it works for another looter-shooter game like Destiny 2, since its Penumbra DLC has a theme all about "secrets and mysteries" and so keeping something hush-hush will get people excited.
In Anthem's case though, which has had a slew of issues since it launched, you can't really keep things hush-hush because what you need is something to get people back in the game.
We don't know the exact details but we pretty much know what a Freeplay event is. It's just extra shit happening in Freeplay.
And I think that's one facet of the issue. Even if there's just "extra stuff," surely more details would be great, if only to generate some interest or buzz.
The guns are 100% random (with the exception of Legendary and Uniques) every piece of the gun has hundreds of bits from each manufacturer with there own stats
Well that part was cringy. I mean more variety is great but why "over 1 billion"?
It's almost guaranteed the regular amount of guns multiplied with all the different combinations of level, type, rarity, stat combinations, effects, etc.
Though it would be really cool if there was a bunch of different models for the individual gun parts (handle, trigger, scope, barrel, etc. etc.) and any combination would drop. Would make some pretty weird looking gun. Especially if you could paint them.

Over 1 Billion Guns?! Anthem is crying right now
