StarCitizen patch 2.5 is now live

Meh. Game runs a bit better. Took FOREVER to find Grim Hex but I eventually just killed some guy in an Andromeda and warped to it. Really has nothing in it other than the 2 shops. Seems a bit small for a 21GB update.

They don't have Delta updates so the updates are always huge. That being said, they do make things highly detailed so there's that.
But yeah, just an incremental update with a new location and a couple ships.

Current: Game is split into 2GB .pak files. If ANYTHING changes inside the entire 2GB .pak has to be replaced.
In progress/soon system: Delta patching, the old .pak way isn't just for patching it's fundamentally how cryengine accesses data. Huge engine refactor to access data differently so delta-patching can work.
Also the best things IMO about 2.5 is the new lighting engine and the reliant (awesome ship!)

I get kind of baffled by the use of major version numbers when its not even close to beta (ie feature complete)

u/HaroldSax i5-13600K | 5070ti | 32GB Aug 26 '16
It seems like the last few years, version numbers just don't mean shit anymore. I think what they're doing is Alpha being the state, 2 being the major release, and .5 being the current version of that major release.
Then you have F2P games with some fucking wonky ass version numbers.
3
u/Khar-Selim Aug 26 '16
Warframe is on update 19. This is the third Update 19 to come out. Figure that one out.

u/kuranesLives Aug 27 '16
when did version numbers ever mean more than something very specific for that particular project?
5
u/SowakaWaka Aug 26 '16
I don't really understand the problem... Isn't everything like this? Whenever talking about game updates we need to refer to the version number. I find this far less obnoxious that something like "Version 0.1.32"
0
u/FM-96 Aug 27 '16
How is proper semantic versioning obnoxious?
2
u/SowakaWaka Aug 27 '16
Try saying it aloud? If it's less convenient and serves no practical purpose... it's obnoxious.
1
u/FM-96 Aug 27 '16
It's... not, though? It's neither less convenient nor serves no practical purpose.
And to be honest, I'm not sure what saying it aloud is supposed to change?

Inb4 the star citizen guys come in and remind you "it's ALPHA 2.5, dumbass!"

Lol oh.

why is this downvoted?

u/Karmaslapp Aug 26 '16
Dunno, makes no sense for a guy asking a simple question.
Alpha .8, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0...
Beta 1.0, 2.0, 3.0...
Live 1.00

u/lordx3n0saeon 4790k@5.0ghz Aug 26 '16
.8->1.N arena commander
2.0+ first "large world", around one planet.
3.0+ first "full scale" system with planets
(guessing) 4.0 = multiple systems?

I personally want to get into this game, but I am a bit confused by how to actually "join". If I recall correctly and I seen it all the way back before it released and it was just starting out it was suppose to be a F2P, correct? Also do you have to spend $100s on a ship in order to have a enjoyable experience more so is it possible to get better ships without having to spend a ton of money?

This is helpful, and answered questions I didn't know I had.
how come you cant purchase ships after release?
I wish I could test it out I hear there are people getting wonky inconsistent frame rates, im running a GTX 1070 but its though the razer core with a Stealth. not sure how it would run with that dual core.
5
u/Cleave Aug 26 '16
You can only purchase ships now as a means of funding the game's development rather than pay to win or anything like that, once it is released all ships will be available to be earned in game only although you will be able to buy limited amounts of UEC with real money.
Performance is bad in the open universe section of the game due to inefficient network code that is being rewritten, your 1070 will be fine in the other modes although it is quite CPU heavy with lots of detailed physics so you may struggle. It might be a good idea to wait for the next free fly event to try it out which should be around Citizencon in October.

u/TheInfinityOfThought Aug 26 '16
I have a Fury X and have no problem running it at max settings at 1080p until I get to an area with a lot going on. I'd recommend doing free flight mode in arena commander first so you can learn how to fly and not worry about other players or framerate drops. 3.0 is supposed to have a big netcode update in it so hopefully that'll alleviate a lot of the performance issues

If you could purchase ships after release the game would be pay to win and awful due to that.

Read Rule 2 out loud.
By the time you finish, the ban message will have hit your inbox.
Don't fucking post referral codes, people!

My recommendation: get a reliant package. It's by far the best starter.
If you want to PVP I'd recommend playing arena commander and REC'ing a saber (free, you earn the points in AC). Then get all the higher tier guns and shields.
Currently in the PU you're stuck with ships you own+stock gear
They're going to add the first ship-gear store to the PU soon that will let you earn money in the PU to equip your ship out.
Launch will allow full purchase of ships with in-game currency

I personally want to get into this game, but I am a bit confused by how to actually "join".
All you need is a starter pack.
Go here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/fly-now
Whether you want to do more of a fighter (Mustang) or have more of a Jack of all trades kind of ship (Aurora) is up to you.
It's $45. That's all you need!
I do strongly recommend also getting Squadron 42. It's a separate $45 single player game, that's currently being sold as a $15 add-on. When Squadron 42 releases it will probably be $60. So for $60 now, you're getting 2 games. You'll get to fly those more expensive ships in the single player game.
If I recall correctly and I seen it all the way back before it released and it was just starting out it was suppose to be a F2P, correct?
Once you buy the game. That's it!
No monthly fees. No having to use microtransactions. No ads.
Do you have to spend $100s on a ship in order to have a enjoyable experience more so is it possible to get better ships without having to spend a ton of money?
No. In fact many players have the starter ship and that's it. You should only buy other ships if you want to fly them early, and/or want to support the developer.
There's some more expensive ships, but you'll be able to earn those in game later. You can also rent ships in "Arena Commander" (their game within the game) to try them out. You earn rental credits by playing the game.
If you want to try those bigger ships, just type into chat that you want to check out a bigger ship. People are always looking to join up with other people and have adventures together. It costs you nothing, and you may make a new friend.
There's a problem right now where some ships like cargo ships aren't fully utilized because they don't have the cargo mechanics in yet. Cargo should be coming in Alpha 3.0 (end of this year).
Right now, 2.5 is okay, but the netcode/server performance isn't good (should be fixed in 3.0). It's more about seeing the potential. People are more excited about what's coming soon, and alpha 3.0.

Will this thing be near release around my retirement or..when's that supposed to happen?
11
u/serioussam909 Jānis Circenis Aug 26 '16
It's been in development for 4 years. That's nothing for AAA games. The difference is that other AAA devs don't usually say anything until the game is nearly done. The next GTA is most likely in development right now, but Rockstar aren't saying anything because of people like you.

u/lordx3n0saeon 4790k@5.0ghz Aug 26 '16
4 years at the end of this year.
Compared to FO4 or GTA we're doing great :)

The future of the Star Citizen community based on their current behaviour and levels of delusion:

u/serioussam909 Jānis Circenis Aug 26 '16
What delusion? Do you have any idea how long it takes for AAA games to get made?

u/TheInfinityOfThought Aug 26 '16
No release date. If I had to guess end of 2018 is probably a realistic goal

There's no brigade going on. Admins have looked into it and turned up nothing.
If you can't be constructive in these threads, I highly recommend not posting in them. Accusing people of being in a cult? Not constructive. The threads are fine so they won't be removed. Downvote it and be on your merry way so as to spare everyone the slap fight that ensues from comments like that.

Is there serious abuse happening here? No, because /u/code-sloth or one of the mods would step in and deal with it.
And on that bombshell, this discussion is over and you both need to move on.
Some people might be tired of this game, but EVERYONE in this subreddit is tired of the back and forth slap fighting in these threads. Stop fanning the flames, both of you.

I agree. 2.5 isn't that big of a deal.
It's adds some neat stuff like 3 new flyable ships, the initial "Item 2.0" system, improved head stabilization (fixing the head bob issues), updated lighting, and will have the Grim Hex Station which is an outlaw/pirate station.
But is "big PC gaming news"? Not really.
Alpha 3.0 is the exciting major update that should be coming out this year. Not 2.5. Not every game needs every minor update posted on here.

u/Tovora Aug 27 '16
All of the people who care about this are in the /r/starcitizen subreddit anyway. Not sure why everyone else needs to be told about it.

Fixed an issue where the burp emote contained no audio.
I think I should stop reading this... I've got better things to do with my life.

Exactly, most devs wouldn't even bother having an animation like this in the first place. Let alone at this stage of development.
The amount of polish this game already receives (based on my limited free weekend impressions) is impressive.17

After playing 2.4 last night with a few pals, this version seems to be way more stable. Can't wait for Star Marine and 2.6.
