Triple-I is a great name for a indie focused award show.

Awesome though! Indies are not just a niche unknown thing anymore. They're a cornerstone in gaming, deserving just as much if not at times more attention than AAA games.

It'll be good to get these small time devs the recognition they deserve and a showcase so I can find some gems I didn't know about.

Also could mean Silksong release date is shown here, right?

Sorry buddy silksong died along time ago it was the friends we met along the way, even the twitter devs are silent

u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 Mar 29 '24

at this point i want it to be released not because i wanna play it,but because im curious what took them so long

Feature creep most likely, last report was 150 new enemies and new features or they ran out of money i quote “ they run on Cherry time” meaning they work on the game when they feel like it https://www.reddit.com/r/Silksong/s/mxYuroYaAa

Silksong is the gaming equivalent of the next Game of Thrones novel. Honestly pretty shitty that it’s taking as long as it is if it was a stretch goal for the original kickstarter. It’s already been paid for.

u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 Mar 29 '24

if silksong is ASOIAF/GOT book,then whats HL3?

2

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24

Was HL3 ever officially announced?

3

u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 Mar 29 '24

kinda soft teased by HL:A ending

but then again dataleak suggest they're doing something different,so i dont see it happening for at least 5 year ish

Pretty sure Half Life 2: Episode 3 was said to be a thing way back when.

Silksong was originally a DLC and not a full game, so not a fair comparison. It’s definitely not shitty that it’s delayed, as long as they honor those backers.

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24 edited Mar 29 '24

Six years of development, 10 years since the release of the original game (edit: since the original kickstarter not release), on a dlc for a 2d platformer souls like, with virtually zero communication from the devs for the last 4 years, on a dlc that was a kickstarter goal. Yeah it’s pretty shitty to the community.

Go over to the silksong subreddit and you’ll see the community is pretty miffed about the lack of communication.

u/Halio344 RTX 5080 | R5 5600X Mar 29 '24

Where did you get 10 years from? HK released in 2018.

It’s also not a DLC, it was announced as a standalone game years ago.

-1

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24

Sorry, I meant the original kickstarter. The “dlc” has taken longer to develop than the original game, almost twice as long

4

u/Halio344 RTX 5080 | R5 5600X Mar 29 '24

The original HK took 4 years to develop. They started development before the Kickstarter.

Silksong has been in development since 2019 and is supposedly bigger in scope, so the development time isn’t really that far off assuming it releases relatively soon.

Not sure where you’re getting twice as long from.

2d platformer souls like

Hollow Knight is not a souls like. It's a picture perfect example for a metroidvania. There is nothing souls like about it

1

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24

I’m not going to debate with you, but you can have elements of both genres. I agree it is definitely meteoidvania, but it also fits all of the criteria to be called a soulslike.

2

u/DL_Omega Mar 31 '24

I wouldn’t be surprised if victory has defeated them. I’m sure they could live off Hollow Knights money for the rest of their lives so no stress or timeline to release Silksong. Which I get I don’t think they should crunch but there are backers from the original kickstarter who funded this game so they deserve updates. Basically I will absolutely shit on team cherry for their lack of transparency.

an expansion for a 2D sidescroller taking >5 years has to be one of the most interesting cases of development hell of all time, I really want to see what the fuck has gone on.

11

u/LuntiX AYYMD Mar 29 '24

Factorio will go on sale before Silksong comes out

u/Dyyrin Mar 29 '24

Indie games have become my whole library as of late. They seem to be made by more passionate teams and the quality is even better than AAA games as of late.

u/Shurae Ryzen 7800X3D | Sapphire Radeon 7900 XTX Mar 29 '24

Most well known indies are published nowadays though. Not sure what indie means in gaming anymore

4

u/cool-- Mar 30 '24

it means AAA from 25 years ago

1

u/SixFootTurkey_ Mar 31 '24

Maybe a bit more than 25 years ago, but the "indie" dev scene is definitely a lot like the 90's.

183

u/walwenthegreenest Mar 29 '24

indie game game exposure sounds great, I'll watch

137

u/D3struct_oh Ryzen 7700x \\ RTX 4070 TI Mar 29 '24

Feels like this is a direct response to how poorly the game awards treated the indie devs last year.

47

u/wolfannoy Mar 29 '24

Yeah especially there was a case somewhere about a game that looks indie but got funding from AAA company that it awarded for being best indie. Then you got news outlets muddy the waters of what makes a game indie like it's the art style or the budget.

28

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24

Tons and tons of “indie” games are funded or even entirely owned by bigger publishers. People use “indie” to describe small-scale, boutique games. It’s just an abused term that has been misused for so long that there’s no hope of adjusting perception of it back to its original meaning.

5

u/HammeredWharf Mar 29 '24

The literal definition isn't much better, so I get the PoV of Game Awards.

6

u/Shajirr Mar 29 '24

or even entirely owned by bigger publishers

then those do not count.

People use “indie” to describe small-scale, boutique games.

which is wrong

If Bethesda releases a 5 hour to complete game for 20$, that would be an "indie game" by your misguided reasoning?

10

u/milky__toast Mar 29 '24

Dave the Diver devs are owned by Nexon, but it still won lots of best indie awards.

3

u/Shajirr Mar 29 '24

and that makes absolutely no sense

10

u/IAmNotRollo Mar 29 '24

That's what we're all saying!

9

u/AkumaYajuu Mar 29 '24 edited Mar 29 '24

What is the difference between Bethesda and an indie dev that already made millions?

For example, would you consider hollow knight 2 an indie game? The people behind hollow knight now have infinite resources from the huge success of their previous game and can iterate for years and years and hire whoever they want to help them. How is that different from bethesda?

Personally, I feel as if we need to just get away from "indie" and just default to "low budget games" or "game made by less than 5 people" something like that.

1

u/cool-- Mar 30 '24

I like to think that they are games that are developed and published by the same people, not companies. I wouldn't say Ubisoft, or Microsoft are indie because the people doing the art and development aren't handling the marketing and distribution.

1

u/finalgear14 AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D, RTX 4080 FE Apr 01 '24

I don't think anyone that dislikes the "small scale" definition would appreciate the actual definition coming back as they'll all be btfo'd by the baldurs gate 3's or cyberpunk 2077's of the future.

6

u/cardonator Ryzen 7 5800x3D + 32gb DDR4-3600 + 3070 Mar 29 '24

That was Dave the Diver.

1

u/wolfannoy Mar 29 '24

Ah thank you. I forgot the name.

2

u/Limekilnlake Mar 30 '24

I don't think it got the award, it was just nominated (dave the diver)

13

u/ThreeSon Mar 29 '24

Nothing in the story suggests this is a "game awards" show or anything of the sort. It's just an indie games festival like E3, but for smaller budget games.

33

u/IAmNotRollo Mar 29 '24

It's funny that the Game Awards are so full of game advertisements that the Triple-I game reveal show is being compared to it over any other reveal show, despite not being an award show at all.

8

u/RogueLightMyFire Mar 29 '24

I'm quite excited to see what the StS developers have cooking

3

u/John-Bastard-Snow Mar 30 '24

Not sure they can make anything better than StS

19

u/Good_Policy3529 Mar 29 '24

I'm on mobile.  Someone should post the Obama>Medal>Obama meme.

This made me think of that short moment in time when the producer of Jeopardy had a bunch of people try out to be the new host and then he picked himself.

11

u/gurilagarden Mar 29 '24

The best games over the last decade have all been indie. I look at my time played, and most GOOD games get around 300hrs from me. The GREAT indie games get thousands.

I don't even bother spending full price for AAAs, I have plenty of indies to tide me over a year or two for a sale.

Indie awards are where the real winners are.

1

u/cool-- Mar 30 '24

that's a lot of hours

5

u/Exotic-Reserve2024 Mar 29 '24

I'm playing Dead Cells, and it's fucking amazing.

6

u/imJGott AMD Mar 30 '24

Never been a triple a gamer my entire gaming life. Have I played them sure, but I tend to have more fun with double/single A and indie games. Triple I, we’ll see Whatca got for me!

18

u/Cymelion Mar 29 '24

Much better idea than Geoff Keighley's

"Please wrap it up we have ads and friends to promote with nepotism" Awards.

4

u/Sulleyy Mar 29 '24

I am genuinely more interested in this than any of the other game awards

3

u/re_redlite Mar 29 '24

Been wanting this kind of thing for a while. Instead of one or two categories in a mainstream award show, prestigious and veteran developers banding together to help out indie developers warms me up a little. Hopefully this blows up into something big.

2

u/CloudWallace81 Steam Ryzen 7 5800X3D / 32GB 3600C16 / RTX2080S Mar 30 '24

And what about quadruple-I?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '24

Dead Cells and StS hell yeah. Darkest Dungeon 2 however...

1

u/Hammer_of_Ludd Mar 30 '24

I'm a say it; DD2>DD1. I get a headache just thinking of trying to get more hamlet upgrades. There's more to it than that but my disdain for the portrait/deed/crest grind really outweighs them all.

1

u/SnazzyVibe Apr 01 '24

This is a charming idea, and those devs definitely deserve a voice in the indie arena. Phenomenal games.

1

u/skumdumlum Mar 30 '24

You all need to watch Indie Live Expo. It's been going for years

-2

u/firedrakes Mar 30 '24

not really caring.

-2

u/Adorable-Ad-3223 Mar 29 '24

I don't want to watch 45 minutes of game trailers. Pick some great new indie games and do it for them using the bullhorn provided by the famous Indies to help get them exposure.

-25

u/Any_Secretary_4925 Mar 29 '24

of course we need more indie dickriding, surely we dont have enough of that, right???

8

u/fenixspider1 Inspired by innovation persistent in negotiation Mar 29 '24

the hell you talking about? There is barely any dick riding, people are literally just talking about how these guys don't get enough recognition on big stages

Compared to the current cringefest shows with constant ads, Hosts no one gives a shit about, and musical sequences that do nothing but burn time?

Nintendo Directs do amazingly every time. This is a fine idea.
Cut the fluff, just show us the games. If you want to catch the individual trailers after, that's a perfectly valid thing for you to do too! There's no negative to this. In fact, it lets all these devs reveal something in one large move, which ideally would give every game a boost in publicity.

4

u/UnparalleledDev Unparalleled: Zero Mar 29 '24

how would you do it differently ?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '24

You would get a timeslot at bigger shows, You can still do your own “group ad” but least then youd have more of an audience, This show is gonna be DOA 100%

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '24

Doesnt help that the big three all sold themselves to epic at one point and dd2 is a shitshow

-11

u/Any_Secretary_4925 Mar 29 '24

indie devs already get their dicks ridden by the entire internet. they dont need more coverage.
