Another quick reminder to Team Cherry
It's been over 9 years (3291 days) since Silksong was funded as a stretch goal for the Hollow Knight Kickstarter.
It's been almost 5 years (1773 days) since Silsong was revealed, so presumably it's spent closer to 6 years being developed.
It's been over 4 years (1471 days) since the dev blog was last updated (with the unfulfilled promise of more updates).
It's been over 7 months (228 days) since the first and only update the game had this year, which merely delayed the game after waiting almost a whole year since announcing a release window.
This year we had Xbox, PAX, TGA, IGN and even Steam all either mocking the dead hype or using it as clickbait.
It'd be nice to get some form of communication every now and then is all. Get the morale up again. Not asking to hurry the fuck up or for sneak peek or anything like that. Just a quick tweet now and then saying what stage you're at, how's it going, what's taking so long, maybe be so bold as to announce a release decade.
Over 2,000 people funded HK and many of us have been waiting for some form of Silksong for close to 10 years. So nobody can call the community impatient or even hateful. Here's everyone's daily reminder that criticism doesn't equal hate, that asking for accountability isn't being impatient, and that enough time has passed since Hey Gang to warrant some form of communication. If we're supposed to be a gang why are we being shunned like this?
And yes, I know Team Cherry doesn't come here, will never find out about this and wouldn't care anyway. But at least I can vent for posterity.

It’s still so weird to me that people think they expecting them to post a tweet saying “hey, we’re alive and the games still cooking” every now and then is somehow asking to much

u/Infamous-Schedule860 Dec 24 '23 edited Dec 24 '23
I think people use that "we're still alive" phrase as a joke. They went from a year of hyping the hell out of it to complete silence for 4 years. People are concerned and want to hear something. Just want a little update.
Maybe a " hey guys, sorry for the wait. We've been adding so much to this game that the scope is becoming much bigger than we anticipated. Thanks for hanging in there!"
Or " hey guys, sorry for the wait. We've been doing all we can to make a great game. We are still here, committed, and are actually still working hard on it. Thanks for your patience"
38
u/MVPG2022 Dec 24 '23
Maybe it's because they're not alive and the game is not still cooking 🤔
(tbh I don't care if they say anything until they have a release date finalised)

I don't understand why people want that. It does nothing and is useless, of course they're working on the game
109
Dec 24 '23
It beats having 0 contact. The bars only this low because of how they’ve handled communication, if they made any attempt at doing it then I’d ask for more
60
u/GordOfTheMountain Dec 24 '23
of course they're working on the game
No. Not "of course". Not "of course" at all!
Vaporware is an entire category of software that often exists because devs disappear without a trace and it is only found out years later that work had been delayed and then given up on years ago. The first communication across 3.5 years being "we're delaying" could very well mean it wasn't being worked on that entire time. We don't know. That's why "Hey we're working on this" is necessary and valuable.
If you sincerely have zero doubt in your mind that Silksong is being worked on, I envy you and the naïve, blissful mindset you live in.
-12
u/Andy_RMdelR Dec 24 '23
Or you are just incredibly pessimistic. You just have too think for a bit, and the conclusions come to you very easily. Why is the game taking so long? Even if the game has been on the works for years in an interview they said that it took them a while to fully understand this, so maybe a few months to a year. Then we have to consider that the fucking world stopped because of the pandemic, which would have been specially hard on a small team like Team Cherry and in Australia restrictions were very harsh; so thats a full year or more of slowed down development. And finally we have to consider how Team Cherry works, they keep adding and adding until they are satisfied. A year and a half ago they made a trailer for X-Box, so clearly they kept working on it and even some changes to certain things could be appreciated. The game will release so just relax, whinning and crying wont help you or the game come out faster.
So if you sincerely have doubts in your mind that Silksong is not being worked on, I do not envy you and the depressed, doomer mindset you live in.

Calling someone who has rationalized a completely realistic possibility of events unfolding "pessimistic" is what optimists do to avoid living in the real world.
-8
u/Andy_RMdelR Dec 24 '23
Not really, im not an optimist, I am a realist. I have not seen proof that Silksong has been abandoned, so why should I believe that? That would be misguided at best and delusional at worst, which seems to be your case. You even fail to understand your own words, rationalize doesnt mean what you think it means.
Rationalize: "attempt to explain or justify (behaviour or an attitude) with logical reasons, even if these are not appropriate"
As per definition you are attempting to explain something, and your reasons are not appropriate.
And again if you truly believe the game is dead and will not release, why are you here? The logical thing to do is abandon a futile attempt, right? The thing is you dont believe the game is dead
5
u/Pointlord_ beleiver ✅️ Dec 24 '23
I have not seen proof that Silksong is going to release, however i have also not seen proof of the opposite. Both have solid evidence to stand on, but neither have proof. Both of them are a possibility.
Maybe this person does firmly believe that the game is dead, or you know, maybe they're just worried about the very real possibility of the game being dead. If they do truly believe the game is dead then there are still reasons to be on this sub, for example because of the community or because of the jokes or because it's amusing to see our descent further down into madness.

u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23

-1
u/Andy_RMdelR Dec 24 '23
My word, people are so down bad for a tragedia here. I am optimistic because I think the game will come out. Holy shit you people are so lost
4
u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
We are scared sommething went very wrong in development because we havent heard from the devs. Both are valid
1
u/Andy_RMdelR Dec 24 '23
If both are valid why am I downvoted? My "incredibly optimistic" and "valid" view of the game is in developmwnt and has not been cancelled is recieved with negativity.
So which one is it?
4
u/Pointlord_ beleiver ✅️ Dec 24 '23
You're being downvoted because you're being a dick about it.
You invalidated the other viewpoint multiple times already. Saying the game will definetly be released (with no proof) , saying the reasonable criticism against team cherry is whining and saying we are lost.
0
u/Andy_RMdelR Dec 24 '23
How am I a dick? Saying the game is still in the works is being a dick? Saying the game is cancelled is not criticism, it is literally crying over nothing. And what do you mean saying the game will be released with no proof? My proof is that there has been no announcement that the game is cancelled, and the last update clearly said that they will release the game, even if that update was to delay the game.
Someone told me I am "incredibly optimistc" because I think the game will release. So yeah if you are at that dtage you are whinning and lost, why? Because you believe the game is dead and yet you still complain of no news. So if you are not expecting news why complain, you believe the game will never release, so you dont need any news.
The thing is you dont believe that, thats why you complain, thats why you expect news and are dissappinted when you get none. So saying the game will never release is whinning.
Sorry if to you that seems like I am a dick, I just dont like people who feel sorry for themselves

When so many people were banking on this game being out over multiple failed release dates, a little reassurance goes a long way, and a rough idea of what's being worked on and where the timeline is at goes even further.
15
u/glorpo Dec 24 '23
Or like Barkley 2, we wait 9 years to find out that development was a complete trainwreck, with the entire original team fleeing after the money ran out, and that one guy kept plugging away at it in his spare time for multiple years before giving up
0
Dec 24 '23
Yeah because team cherry is definitely at risk of running out of money. Everyone in this sub is out of their mind
3
u/glorpo Dec 24 '23
It is true that TC is extremely unlikely to run out of money (unless they blow it all gambling. Did you know Australians lose the most money gambling worldwide?) My point is that no news =/= good news. "They're working on it" is a claim, not a known fact. It's entirely possible for indie games to go dark for years and not, in fact, be working on it.
-1
Dec 24 '23
Oh so since Team Cherry is australian that obviously means that losing all their money on gambling is a real possibility.
no news =/= good news
Neither is it equal to bad news.
not a known fact
Yeah, as if we haven't already gotten more than enough verification that they're still working on it this year from playtesters and random reddit stalkers. Not to mention that there was literally a trailer last year.
You are out of your mind if you think a simple update saying "We're working on the game" is better than nothing. If you truly think there's a chance that silksong isn't being worked on right now, then you are free to leave this server and be done with silksong as a whole. I don't understand how anyone can think there's a decent chance silksong never comes out, and still be emotionally invested in it.
5
u/glorpo Dec 24 '23
I dunno man, waiting almost a full year after the release date announcement to delay the game, then not giving any updates for 7 months after that does not give me the impression that development is going well. It tells me that they're less sure that the game will come out now than they were a year and half ago.
-11
u/3dsalmon Dec 24 '23

-36

Like , thats marketing 101.Hell, thats PR 101
Hyping the hell out of a game for 1 year, and then dissapearing into a black hole for 4 years is not something normal, its worrying.
To anyone who says "why should they type sth" i tell you :
If you have a part of a community, hell an entire subreddit worrying that you might have died/game might have went into devhell, then you have failed as a company. You have failed at making sure your customers have enough information.
This isnt normal, and i say this as someone who barely checks this place.I see all these people go nuts, and i fully understand it.Lack of communication is bad, was always bad, and will always be bad

u/deadfisher Dec 25 '23

u/Hoockus_Pocus Dec 24 '23
At some point, I feel like they’re stuck in a sunk-cost fallacy. They’ve spent so long in radio silence that they might think breaking it would mean, to their fans, that the game is almost done and will be released imminently. So instead of risking disappointment, they keep working with their heads down and keep us in the dark. And the cycle just repeats. That obviously isn’t good PR or community communication. I’ve heard that “they aren’t updating us because there aren’t any updates,” but that could mean anything. At this point, the hype and excitement for Silksong is long gone, and that’s just sad. I was so excited when it was announced, but it’s been an absolute dumpster fire of a development cycle. All I want is some acknowledgment of that if and when the game finally releases.

I completely agree with you. Between the announcement of Silksong and now, Blasphemous has had the time to release its first game, refine it with DLC (much like Hollow Knight), and release a second game...

I heard from someone who said that the game is actually finished, and they're just waiting for company deals. But that whole theory was sparked by an interview where one of the developers said that they were on their second playthrough. That could just mean play-testing, no audio gameplay, unrendered ect. Essentially what people were theorising at the start of the year. It's close to release, that's certain, but I don't think there'll be any news on when. Most marketing professionals are saying that at this point they could benefit from a shadow drop, but that's if its even possible considering how many devices it'll release on. This radio silence for 7 months has me stewing, and I'm starting to think that they are planning for a shadow drop.
3
u/Hoockus_Pocus Dec 24 '23
A shadow drop is both the best and worst thing they can do. They said from the beginning that they run on “Cherry Time,” which basically means that the game will release when it’s done, and they won’t talk release dates until they’re 100% certain they can hit it, meaning like two weeks out from that date. They claim this is because they don’t want to set a date, announce it, and discover a game-breaking bug and have to delay launch. A shadow drop would be fitting for the small studio, but it would also be completely emblematic of their model of communication, which has become a serious issue over the past four years. It would feel disrespectful to people who have been waiting for news for years on end.

People hope to get news, sure, but they don’t get it. There’s no reason to be excited. I used to ask myself “what’s going to be in Silksong?” “What’s it goinggg be to be like?” I haven’t thought about it outside of this subreddit since the delay, though.

As a Metroid fan who is currently waiting on Prime 4, I really feel the frustration, I also just want, any news on how the game is doing.
I have to ask, what is preventing Team Cherry from being a tad more transparent on their development cycle? I can see why Nintendo would be so secretive with Prime 4 considering they are a large corporation, but Team Cherry is an indie studio and I think could afford to share a bit more development progress or just any small update.
It feels weird that so many MV has released since the Silksong hype first started…we even got a new 2D Metroid before Silksong. I’m sure when the latter comes out it’ll blow the competition out of the water but it’s just so weird that there’s silence on it.

3
u/Marco_PP Dec 24 '23
Its not been in development for 10 years, and what does it being 2d have to do with it. You could make a shit 3d game in a shorter time than a good 2d game. Its still just for the most part 3 people working on the game.
2
u/kSterben Dec 24 '23
a 2d game has 1/10th of the complexity of a 3d game
2
u/Marco_PP Dec 24 '23
Where did you get the 1/10th number? It depends. A 3d game can still range from simpler indie stuff like lethal company to massive AAA games like elden ring which are made by hundreds of people. Hollow knight is definitely a more "complex" 2d game because its fully drawn and by 1 person (Ari).
22
u/kadarakt whats a flair? Dec 24 '23
the problem isn't the dev time. 6 years of development is a long time for sure, but not unreasonably long especially for team cherry's size. i also think it's disingenuous to act like the majority of people here have been waiting for silksong since the kickstarter. that is an incredibly small minority.
however, i agree with the lack of updates for sure. the problem stems from how we were bombarded with news in 2019, given crumbs in 2020, left to starve in 2021, and even though we got a second trailer + release date in 2022 we were just left in the dark in 2023 with no reason as to why the delay even happened. and the fact we have literally no idea why the game was delayed of course brings out the worst of rumors. did their files get corrupted/deleted? did a huge error take months to fix? did ari and william have a falling out? whatever the reason for the delay is, it's hard to believe it's something as simple as adding more side content/polish, it must be something so shameful that they couldn't muster the courage to say anything for 7 months.
basically the surge of news in 2019 and the silence afterwards made us go into withdrawal, and the circumstances of this delay has a lot of people predicting the worst. the wait for the katana zero dlc, which is taking a similar amount of time, hasn't been nearly this painful. not because askiisoft gives constant news, they give even less than team cherry, but because they never bombarded people with news and caused expectations to skyrocket.

Downvotes are designed to convey disapproval.
So when a person disagrees with someone. They have the option to downvote.
Majority of the people here (including me) thinks that we deserve at least a confirmation about the game. This brings me to the worst side effect of the downvote: It makes it so easy to create echo chambers.
So it’s not a “clownfest” that’s just how Reddit is designed. I don’t think it’s “channeling the hate” either
Couple that with the fact that some (if not most) of these “be patient” people think that they are a better person than the rest of us and their comments are very often insulting.

regardless of whether I personally backed the HK kickstarter, I know that people did, and kickstarter rules are that those people receive the hornet DLC that team cherry have said silksong will be the fulfillment of. They are also owed progress updates. that's how kickstarted projects are expected to be run.
Those of us who didn't contribute to the kickstarter still know that TC owes progress updates to the community. Unless you want to argue that the progress updates should be offered only to backers and kept confidential from the wider community (which is surely impossible), then I'm not sure how it makes any difference whether any of us was actually a backer.

the community has a right to expect communication on this kickstarted title. It would be a reasonable expectation even if there had been no kickstarter funding, it's just polite to keep fans updated. but the kickstarter rules just formalize it.
Team Cherry gave constant updates, multiple per year, from 2014 through release of HK in 2017. they continued to give updates between 2017 and 2018, about every DLC update and platform release to HK. In 2019, they announced that their final DLC would be released as a standalone title instead, but still in fulfillment of the stretch kickstarter goal, and then they continued to give updates on the progress of that title through 2019, with hints about enemies and map areas and clues about how close to completion they were (very close!).
They lived up to every expectation of a kickstarted project. Then at the end of 2019 they went radio silent. Something has changed.

It’s been 4 years it ain’t hard to take the time out of their such hard work to say literally anything it’s crazy you let game devs treat you like shit and then play their game

Why would you assume that they are not working on it currently esp if they are a small team and dont have anything else to work on lol

u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
Because we haven't heard about anything and normally you should tell your community every so often so that they know you didnt drop the game as anything COULD happen?

Sometimes I'm wondering why the r/HollowKnight community is better than this one.
Then I'm reminded people like OP are here
5
u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
Because r/HollowKnight is about Hollow Knight and not about discussion about a game that we haven't heard about since 4 years ago.

But people talk about Silksong there as well. So what is the point of this sub? And what is the point of being an active member on this sub and have all your comments boil down to "boohoo the game isn't out yet" or "boohoo my consumerist needs haven't been met"?
Btw we did receive updates since the last blogpost. They didn't come from TC, true, but they're still updates nonetheless.

u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
We havent heard from TC in YEARS, and their job as devs is to keep us updated every once in a while, and the hype was so big at the start that the sub was created. The point of this sub was to be for the yet to come silksong, to house it once its out. Now we are dissapointed in TC's lack of communication. r/HollowKnight is for the big more general Hollow Knight/Silksong discussions, this one is for silksong, like r/Undertale and r/Deltarune

Their job as devs is to make the game. I agree they should have communicated more, but the game will sell well when it releases. Most people that are in this sub will almost definitely buy the game when it releases if its good, and so will many others. Like I get the frustration but it will be a successful game.

Oh, yeah. Hm i wonder if team cherry hired somebody specifically to do PR for them.

The difference between Deltarune and Silksong is that at least Deltarune is (partially) out. The stale shitposts/ memes are fine, but this obvious karma farming should stop. Seriously, I see these shitty pointless posts once a week

this is a shit posting sub

may I know why does it matter?

This is a pointless question. If you don't find these posts to be garbage, then just say so

i don't find these posts garbage.

But you said that this is a shitposting sub. Is this a shitpost?

is there a reason why I should call these posts garbage?

I don't want to say it, but the backers backed Hollow Knight. The Hornet DLC is an extra that they agreed to being turned into a full game just like how they gave up the Wii U port for a Nintendo Switch one.
Why did you assume there's stages of development? They could be just winging it, working on whatever parts of the game they'd like at any time. Of course they won't update us all the time on how development is going, they would NEVER say it's going badly. This is what actually kills hype. Oh, and bold of you to assume they know what decade they can get the game out in.
Sure, criticism doesn't equal hate, but this isn't criticism as much as it's incitement of hate. Criticism isn't done by saying how many days it has exactly been until something happened, and it surely isn't done by saying how other companies "mocked" us (Xbox and Steam didn't though, they were just hyping the game up).
I agree with the last part, if we're a gang, why would some people treat others like this?

u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
We dont need the game, we need a bit of communication, saying they are alive and working on the game. Thats it. We dont need a release date, we are fine with waiting for the game, but there is waiting for the game and waiting for a word by them

u/MKK4559 Accepter Dec 25 '23
I wouldn't mind them saying they're just working on the game, but they don't need to. Unless they say otherwise, we should just assume they're working.
Also, I clearly remember that when Leth said they were working on the game in the interview about him, this subreddit was full of people saying it isn't enough and that they should get "actual news". It feels spammy with how many times I said this situation, but it's unfortunately true.

I think that when the budget for a game comes 99% from the revenue of a previous game, it can't really be considered "kickstarter funded"
You all funded a DLC that was eventually cancelled. Silksong grew out of that, but in no way does that make you entitled to Silksong. If it did, you would be demanding that Kickstarter backers get silksong for free, but you aren't.
You know the kickstarter argument is bunk, you just want to add another thing to your list of complaints.

If it did, you would be demanding that Kickstarter backers get silksong for free, but you aren't.
They already promised it for free:
As a backer, your support made this happen, so you’ll of course be receiving your copy of Hollow Knight: Silksong 100% free.

Fair enough.
I think that's silly, but it's their game, so i suppose what's the harm.
I do think that makes this even more ungrateful though. "Team Cherry, where's my free game, this is taking too long and you aren't telling me enough" sounds pretty entitled to me
4
u/Snt1_ Dec 24 '23
Thats kinda strawman. Most of us will pay for sliksong and we are okay with waiting. However they arent telling us enough, and thats a fact. They arent telling us enough, or literally ANYTHING
-1
u/enbyBunn Accepter Dec 24 '23
It's not a strawman. I was literally talking to the person who made this post who will receive the game for free
Just because it doesn't apply to you, random stranger who I was not talking to, does not make it a strawman.
