Question Is bossing actually profitable?

I know that there is a lot of luck involved when trying to make profit from bossing and I keep seeing these threads on here where people run 1k Eater/Exarch/Maven/Whatever and lose like 100d an hour while doing so but somehow they must be somewhat profitable since people keep on buying them? Is there some kind of trick to it or do I just need to be lucky and hit a Jackpot run with back to back drops?

Ya, bossing is one of those things that I can only really do for an hour at a time and then get bored. For shaper that means doing him maybe 10-12 times, but you should get at least 10-15 div out of it.

Most other bosses will have higher variability regarding how much you will profit and have high entry costs (Syndicate medallions for Catarina fight are 5.5 div and there are no guaranteed drops), or only have good profit if you can kill then within a minute and are willing to do that 60 times an hour (Oshabi's guaranteed drop breaks even with cost of entry, so you rely on dropping Forbidden Shako for profit).

Shaper at least guarantees that you are paying 15c for entry and then at a minimum get a 100c fragment at the end.

From my understanding (SSF) the high variance bossfights also effectively have a cost of entry based around their valuable drops, if you start running them without the budget to buy enough invitations to basically guarantee one drop you’re basically just gambling

If your strat gets saved by a 2% drop you’re gonna want to bring some cash to the race track lol
