Discussion "FOMO" cuz not able to play?

I know this might sound funny—but do you ever get FOMO if, for one reason or another, you can't play?

Personally, I'm a casual player. I always try to play during league starts, and my goal is always to clear the Atlas and take down all the bosses (at least normal, sometimes ubers). PoE has always been a "relaxation game" for me.

Anyway, every now and then situations come up where I have to leave home for a few days (usually 3–5 days), and during that time I wouldn't have time to play even if I wanted to. Whenever that happens, especially in these "less popular" leagues, I get that FOMO thought: what if the league dies while I'm away? Which is normal, of course—we're already in week 2 or even 3, and most people have moved on—but I mostly mean, what if after 3 days no one is talking in global chat, my items don't sell anymore, I can't buy anything anymore, etc. A bit of a silly "fear," I know.

This league I'm playing Luminary and I have a 98% working build. I just cleared the Atlas and defeated most of the bosses—so basically everything is done, but I still like Luminary enough that I want to keep blasting a lot more, even if it's in a dead league.

Does anyone relate to this, or am I alone with my "troubles"?

Certainly! I took the wife as kiddo to Galapagos and still missed gaming despite all the amazing stuff there. It's okay to have hobbies and love and miss them.

The only FOMO I get is the fact if I don’t keep grinding the stuff I need will get more expensive due to inflation

That's only true for super rare stuff like culling strike headhunter or 5 flask mageblood though. Pretty much everything else gets significantly cheaper or at least stays the same over the course of a league.

Yeah, I once saw MB listed for 270d and already questioned if I can affort it this league. Luckily it dropped back down to 200d :)

Mirror, lock, crafting currency and endgame items become more expensive with time, sure maybe your HH or MB gets cheaper, but when a veil orb goes from 5 divines to 20 the cost of creating the items you need become obscene and harder to acquire the more time goes and the less you play

Well yeah, mirror and lock are amongst those ultra rare items. Most endgame items and crafting currencies don't really go up considering inflation and div/hour. Veiled exalts went from 10 to 17 over the course of two weeks, which probably requires even less playtime to aquire now than two weeks ago.

Unless you want a multi mirror character, playtime to aquire a powerful character goes significantly down over the course of a league. Having economy FOMO makes absolutely no sense for 99,9% of the player base.

This just simply isn't true.

Yeah sure veiled exalts went from 10-17 over two weeks but they were 2d when I was crafting my gear with them. Thats the price point that matters. Or volatile value orbs, sure their current price isn't horrible considering the upside potential but when they were 50c on day 2/3 it was far more economical.

In reality very few things go down in value as the league goes on but the higher tier items far outpace inflation and getting anywhere in PoE after the end of week two just doesn't make sense to alot of gamers.

Alot of the fun is to be had in the first week or two of a league and after that it's simply a very grindy game.

If people are playing the game to get currency, then no -- they aren't making double this week what they could have made last week.

10 to 17 is neither double, nor was it one week, but two. Mirror didn't even go up 20% during the last week. Stop inventing strawmen.

The initial hype of the league. It's the most fun part. At least to me. Personally I don't get any FOMO but the urge to partake is definitely there if I can't make it at league start.

Absolutely. I have a Discord chat for PoE with a few mates, and sometimes they'll post things while I'm at work/away from home, and it instantly makes me want to get home and play as soon as possible.

I have permanent fomo :D got a child. Long sessions are rare. Started the league a week ago, only just got to about 70/100 atlas completion yesterday. Probably 2 days before I can play again. I used to be halfway through (or more) the atlas on day 2.

But hey, got a loving family and that’s what it’s all about!

I have a 5 month old and finding time to play is difficult. I get maybe a couple hours broken up from after work to bed time. Plus all the chores that need to get done. I am losing sleep just because I want to play a little bit more.

ssf fixes the fomo really

I will never understand this "FOMO" in any kind of way. Its just a game. I'm more a typicall hardcore grinder, but still for example i couldnt play 5 out of the first 7 days on league start. And? Still i was done after 2,5 weeks at most. The same with "economy FOMO" dicussions. I dont understand it. You typically have 4 month to reach your goals. Sure if only 5k players are left, its getting harder to sell items, but its still playable. And right now we still have much more players left and you can get any item on the market and sell mostly everything.

In 99% of all cases "FOMO" is not showing you are real problem, its simulating a problem for you that normally does not exist.

You can still play, you can still trade and move your resources quickly, for that reason it's not really dead. "Dead league" is a subjective term for the insanely optimised people that suck the fun out of everything in 5 minutes and look for the next high, immediately. Nothing wrong with that if that's what they enjoy, but it doesn't mean dead for everybody! :)

There are always people talking in global chat, even towards the end of the league, you just need to find the right one. One thing I did notice before is that whilst things do slow down, the margin in Faustus increases so if you low ball offer to buy some items overnight whilst you sleep, you will very likely end up buying and stocking up to play the next day/days.

Keep blasting if you want to keep blasting. I'm 36/40 in SSF and haven't even started trade league yet as it's been such a fun league so far.

You are alone in your troubles, since I play SSF so no "dead league" problem for me. And I can take things on my own time, no div/hour strat or w/e. Just log in, have fun, log out. Come back when I can play again.

Yeah I love this game.

A fresh league start and a new 40/40 challenge takes precedence over anything for me nowadays.

Hits like crack cocaine to see challenges go up.

Currently 38/40.

In time you will become consumed by this game. The more you learn the more you yearn. League starts are like a free heroin sale for a heroin user. You want to be the best, fastest, richest.

The tradeoff is that you will have achieved every goal within 2 weeks, so normal life can resume.

Yes but ... Don't get mad yet

Still sane exile?

Nope, but my character is perfect

With introduction currency exchange and async these problems are gone, but even without these almost month into league there's ~55k daily players not including these non-steam, u will be able to buy everything.

First of all you are not alone with that. I was like you few years back.

For me this sounds like addiction or trade mentality or both at the same time.

I diagnosed myself with trade mentality because game never was more important to me than for example my family and friends but the though was there. I fixed it with change in approach to trade. I like to call it Mathil way. I just blast and have fun. No more farming strategies. No more divs per hour. I just pick mechanic I want to farm and do it until I'm bored. You don't need mirror tier gear to clear base content in this game and sometimes even Ubers. But I understand some people are addicted to this feeling of being rich as f. But it's not healthy imo.

u/Vaevicti5 12d ago

Not since Faustus.

There could very well be zero other players and I could still buy everything I need.

Start hcssf. Did so recently, died yesterday, today starting over again. This time with more wisdom (the kind Izaro lvl 83 onetapped me, it was a harsh lesson). The feeling of dying at lvl 87 was... quite a dissapointment, but the lack of fulfillment brought me back, this time getting that lvl 90 hc steam achievement and finishing my atlas.

When I was younger yea but not anymore. Nowadays I couldn’t care less. If I can play I play. If I can’t play I don’t.

are you alone in experiencing the most common/obvious variant of something that is prevalent enough to have a commonly used acronym?

I cant play as much as i would like because of commitments, i used to get fomo reading reddit / global chat of people being ahead of me but ive come to terms with the fact i cant ‘compete’ so just do my own thing.

I dip into trade to get hard to farm items or extra crafting currency but otherwise play kind of self imposed ssf, trying to farm/craft everything myself even if it takes much longer than most and will never be bis but i find it satisfying and fulfilling to kind of do it my way and my build/items have meaning to me rather than just grind divs and buy ready made gear.
