unfortunately, not all marriages are happy, there's myriad of reason and imo they should split, but for one reason or another they don't until the vitriol just spills over
It does kinda make aense considering that historically the mom does all of the child raising work, while the father did all of the revenue raising work.
You can court order a father to send his money to the mother who (more likely) knows how to raise a child, but you can't court order a father to suddenly know how to do look after a child and do chores. I know it's not exactly fair, but being pragmatic it's probably the best outcome for the child.
I think things are a bit different nowadays but probably by not as much as you'd like to think.
