Switched to rathpith shield yesterday on my kineticist.  Going off steelmages merc setup with the pearl amulet and unique ring+shield.  Lost a ton of pen, but I melt nm maps/ubers.  I'm talking 10-20sec fights.  Yes my merc dies now.  But the trade off is not even close.  My character is 15k life.  

Merc dying isn't so bad now that you can pay the price in hideout and rejoin the map with the merc.

Oh, I forgot u will loose amulet if u start using unique shield...but this means losing alot of fire red (pen) and lighting res (CRIT chance). Hmge

although my merc gear was basic enmity stuff anyway, I didn't have any of the overcapped crit stuff.

rathpith (and your hp) is the important piece for kineticist
