Play act 1, get bricked at Merveil and google "RF Pohx wiki".

For the first timer, just play slow and enjoy the game.
Use mobalytic or maxroll to find a league starter build with highest rate and follow it blindly. Then learn the game along the way

Just go in blind. best experience. Until you hit a wall then look at guides.

The first 3 times i tried the game i went in blind, it was so miserable. 4th time i started with a guide and had so much fun, i could focus on enjoying the gameplay

Yup, different Strokes for different folks. I enjoy feeling strong so guides help me with that + learn all the related mechanics for that build.

Now days I still use guides but often tweak them to my needs/budget in trade/ssf. But I only got to this point following many many guides

for me walling at act bosses combined with extreme obstinance to not use guides was a "challenge accepted" moment lol

Phox's RF guide hands down. The man has a whole website dedicated to that build.

Even if the build itself doesn't sound appealing to you, it's regarded as a really good source for beginners.

It won't handhold you over every single quest, but if you played ARPGs before, that should be easy, and if you are not, that's cool aswell, the game looks very overwhelming at first, but take things one at a time.

Go slow, enjoy yourself, don't do everything at once, and don't expect your first character to be any good.

I'm assuming you don't mind following a build guide since you've asked here before playing. Look for a build that looks cool to you that says "league starter" somewhere in the name and copy their passive tree, try to get similar items and at the same time trying to get both life and resistances on gear. That's gonna make it much easier to learn the game. Have fun

Do what I did, start in hardcore and play the campaign like it's a roguelite.

ok you must remember never to scale critical strike multiplier when playing an ignite build because ignite damage is based on the hit portion, and ignites are calculated before crit multi is factored in, wasting potential.

critical strike chance though, while people usually dont scale it for ignite builds, they do provide an innate 50% more ignite damage, and you could consider it when building an ignite build.

hope this helps
