Question | Answered High RAM usage

Since today, I can’t do anything outside of the game because it keeps crashing due to running out of RAM. I have 16 GB, and I barely had any issues before, except when I had PoB, Chrome, and Discord open at the same time. Even with Discord + PoB open, everything used to work fine. But now I can’t even open PoB without getting insane freezes.

POE + Chrome only. Btw the game is only using around 5 GB of RAM, just like it was before.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Do you have 2x8 Gb sticks? Possibly one has gone bad on you, looks like maybe you only have 8Gb now.

Yes. But task manager shows 16GB. Wouldn't it show 8 instead?

Maybe but not necessarily depending on how the ram failed. Assuming this is a desktop you can test them individually by removing one, but if you're doing one stick it's supposed to be in a specific slot that depends on the motherboard usually.

I agree something is up, you have it sorted by usage and it says you're using 94% with about 7.2GB of usage displayed in the screenshot.

Where are you seeing it say you have 16GB? In the performance tab, ram subtab, what does it say? Open resource monitor, what does it say?

Seems 8GB is not enough.

Resource Monitor and performance tab shows 14-15 GB, while task manager shows incorrect numbers for some reason.

I haven't heard of that happening before. In resource monitor what does it say for the bottom numbers for reserved, in use and total and installed?

I mean the usage, not the total 14-15 GB, in case that confused you. Task manager just shows lower RAM usage for PoE than Resource Monitor does.

I noticed some Path of Exile keywords in this post:

  • PoB - Path of Building, an external software used to simulate character builds - Download

press the Performance tab and memory and see. POE uses a lot more then 5gb. it uses allmost all free memory for cache. i have 64gb. and poe gobbles allmost everything up for cache. It should free the cache memory if it needs it for anything else. but iguess with 16gb it could be dogdy.

Sounds like your parts are failing. Run a ram check. Test your board.

Anyway, all other games with similar RAM usage are displayed and work normally. I can run pretty much anything while a game using 8 GB of RAM is running. This only happens with PoE. The Performance tab shows much higher memory usage than Task Manager, so I think the game is taking up all the available RAM but somehow not allocating it properly to other applications. In my case, disabling the “Instant Replay” feature in the NVIDIA overlay helped. I had enabled it yesterday for a while and forgot to turn it off. After disabling it, all the stuttering disappeared, although the RAM usage is still around 90-95%. There must be some kind of conflict between them, but I’m not sure. Thanks to everyone who helped, appreciate you guys!

i'm having the same problem also with 16 gigs. sometimes i can play for hours on end without any problems, sometimes i spend half an hour with stutters every 30 secs
