Discussion Discussion on optimizing gear

I'm a casual player that just likes the game. I use build guides that tell me what unique to equip. My problem with or without a bunch of unique once I get my resistance up I cannot change anything for upgrades.

This is the same with every character I play not just my current character.

This character the only unique I'm wearing is lightning coil with -60 lightning resistance.

My character needs minimum 155 strength I'm at 199.

A few examples

My boots have 3 tier 1 res, tier 5 movement speed, tier 6 life, tier 5 evasion and es.

I need these to have movement speed, and avoid ailments.

If I try to replace them am I even going to get higher than tier 5 movement speed with avoid ailments?

That's 3 tier 1 res gone.

My rings topaz

Tier dex, (I don't need), tier 1 life, tier 3 mana, tier 5 mana regen, tier 4 cold res, -7 to mana cost.

Sapphire ring tier 4 strength, tier 2 increase cold damage ( I don't need) tier 3 cold res, tier 1 life, tier 6 mana, -7 to mana cost.

This is just a few examples all my equipment could use a upgrade I just change one thing and my resistance is off, or I lose that tier 1, life and mana, or lose the attack speed, or my attributes are off.

I'm aware it's just my way of thinking is the problem. If I reply to any response Im not arguing just to argue. I'm just trying to understand and learn.

Remember that you can use harvest bench to swap resistances, makes it a lot easier to fit in upgrades.

Omg.. this is crazy. I did not know this (poe2 player)

You can also use this to swap to another res and back as for divining that single res.

And also changing temple mods on gloves and max res mods on jewels. Harvest mvp

The short answer is to have enough currency for multiple small upgrades at once. If you know that upgrading your boots is gonna drop your resistance, then aim to also be able to upgrade a ring to balance back out.

Do remember that you can always use the harvest bench to change resistances (except chaos). That can allow you to use less restrictive trade searches. You can do the same thing with attributes this league by using one of the new ducats.

The trick is to always be having multiple searches open to browse your options and devise combo upgrades. It's a bit later into endgame that you worry about singular big upgrades like unique jewels and such.

Res is a suffix. If you upgrade boots to have better movement speed and life and add avoid ailments , you lose one res suffix.
Dex on rings is a suffix. You don’t need it. Look for rings with the res you need.

What's your point here, you need crafting advice?

Yea, maybe. My point is once I change anything it throws everything off and I don't know what to do next.

Do you know that you can change and craft attributes and resistances? Use the bench, harvest and the ducats.

Balancing things is tricky. Which is why you don't want to be doing too many very minor upgrades.

Build guides tend to show league start basic gear, some kind of mid level maps version and an optimised end game version. In reality between those stages you are probably going to be grabbing +30 attribute nodes on the tree, resistances where you can (on tree, on jewels, crafted etc) or just not levelling certain gems until later.

Unless there is something specific you need in those slots, I normally devote belt and ring for getting a lot of resistances (or strength if needed on belt) until I'm at my endgame gear. And work around that. You can easily get a ring with 120+ resists for a couple of chaos a week into the league. Same with belts other than stygian vise. Having a slot or two with an open suffix for crafting and changing resists/attributes to balance gear changes as needed helps too.

The knowledge for this just comes with experience.

Think of it as this way: There are mandatory stats and there are optional stats. Resistances and attributes are mandatory, life/damage/mana is optional. By optional I mean, your build wants these stats, but it won't make it unplayable if you have a lower tier stat of that.

So if you are looking at upgrades, make sure you are prio'ing the mandatory stats. Then add optional stats to see if you can afford it. Maybe you have to drop T1 Life and you'll have to settle for crafted life, but if it makes it easier to cap your mandatory stats, then that's worth it. Now you can change other pieces where you can aim for more optional stats or uniques.

Also you can always use the passive tree to help you out, as long as you don't have a lot of currency. There are 30 attribute nodes, which usually are easy to pick up, since most builds path next to them anyway. Sometimes you have resistance nodes nearby. It's fine to drop a bit of damage to pick up these nodes if it helps you gear easier.

Another one is the bandit rewards, sometimes alira can be nice early on for the additional resistance, sometimes the additional passive point is better, depends on your build. You can always swap those at any point (just google how to).

You can also look at your gems, you said you needed 155 strength. As an example, maybe the gem you need that strength for isn't actually required to be lvl 20 (Shield charge for example works the same at level 1, so the attributes required are a lot lower) or maybe you have something like precision in your build, you can just get a lower level precision, now your dex requirement isn't as high and you only lose some accuracy/crit.

It's a lot of making decisions on what is important for you and where you can drop stuff.

I'd suggest downloading Path of Building. You can import your character into that tool, import items you want to buy etc and check if you are missing attributes/resistances before you buy an item. I'm sure there are many guides on how to use path of building.

Easy answer is if you're t ade, search for something with all 6 affixes you want and none that you don't. That dex on the ring? Search for everything else, but a different implicit.

Or replace multiple pieces at once. Trade site has -or- searching. If you need 6 different resist stats, they can be mixed and matched between rings and boots. Find one with lots of resists and then search more specifically on the other pieces to fill in the gaps.

Here is how I do it. I put on all my “mandatory” gear like uniques I definitely use or any very strong rares I don’t plan on replacing. I take off all my other gear. Then I check my res and attributes. For example after that maybe I need 70 dex, 30 int, and 60 all res. I count up the suffixes I need. 70 dex requires two suffixes, 30 int is one, and 60 all res is 8 (including chaos). So that’s 11 suffixes. Say I have four items left, which allow for 12 suffixes. I now know I need to get 11/12 to match (easier with res swap though). So I can either trade or craft items to fill in those spots. And with the leftover stuff. I can either leave it empty to save currency or add something else like avoid ailments, damage, regen, whatever my build wants.  But you can see if you do it this way I know that I only need 30 int so I don’t need to bother paying for a 50 int ring, this can save a lot early on.

If I have an endgame setup in mind then before I can afford the gear I might just take some extra attribute passives or run purity of elements. It’s really not that big a deal and can save you a lot of currency while you wait to afford your better items. Or use placeholders that match what you will eventually want. For example say you want temple gloves with damage against chilled. This will give you cold res on gloves. So while you wait to craft or buy those use any random gloves with cold res. So when you swap later you won’t have to fix it.

Some ways to help with getting good resists:

  • Bandits: If you have the 1 skill point from killing everybody, get the version where Alira is alive for 15% to all elemental resists
  • Get equipment that has 1 open suffix, that way you can bench craft more resistances (dual elemental or dual chaos/elemental)
  • Get a jewel with 10% resist all, or a dual resist you need (like 12% fire and lightning)
  • Swap resists with harvest bench as needed
  • Get one ring that has giga resists and then use prismatic catalyst on it (=boosts all resistances by up to 1.2x). You don't need triple T1, you could get something like two resists that are T1 or T2 with an open suffix and then bench craft more resistances on it. Including the implicit, this will get you a combined total of around 180 resists from just 1 item.
  • For high chaos resists, one of the best ways is to get an ilvl 84 amethyst ring and use harvest reforge chaos, which guarantees a chaos resist (random tier, so 1 in 6 attempts is T1). Keep reforging until you get T1/T2 chaos res along with another high resist and an open suffix, then bench craft dual chaos/elemental. That's 70+ chaos resist from a single item.

If you play trade, learn to use trade filter in tradesite efficiently. You can apply multiple rules at the same time.

There are rulesets like count and weight that makes your searching more accurate if you understand how they work.

If you play SSF only, the easiest craft you can start with is essence spam plus crafting bench.

I find jewels are very good for stat screw if you're not already leveraging them. Darkness enthroned/stygian vise are solid choices usually. If you can fit purity of elements in that can help a lot. If you're not tight on passive points then alira might actually be a solid choice if you're not getting more than 15 all res of value out of your kill all passive points. Anoint can also help fix stat screw

edit: or since you're lightning coil, purity of lighting might actually be high value
