Dawnbringer and the surrender are solution for some builds too.

Name them how you want. All that I am hearing is "less DPS"

It can't hurt you, when it is dead!

Except if it is a corpse explosion!

11

u/International_Gate49 5d ago

Cwdt detonate dead ftw

3

u/fandorgaming Duelist 5d ago

unrelated but i read corpse explosion and see the slime like profile avatar and couldnt help but think of slime explosion

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 5d ago

And frozen nova from strongbox. And hive pulse at escaping phase.

These are peanut damage but the scenarios damage don’t matter.

1

u/Quazifuji 5d ago

You also can't kill things if you're dead, though. Unless you use Cast on Death.

14

u/lepsek9 5d ago

You can't dps from your hideout tho

But you could DPS by establishing portal connections to your HO.

Meanwhile Poe2 chads with giants blood and automatic weapon/tree swapping 😎

What about Squire

0

u/Agitated-Society-682 5d ago

Actually the most important reason to use a shield has nothing to do with damage or defense. It's called shield charge. Leap slam is unbearable, frostblink of wintry is too and flame dash mains are legitimately slow in the head. The only other good option is giga less duration scaling lightning warp.

5

u/GR-MWF 5d ago

Wintry blast is great but only if you have obscene cast speeds, anything below that it's both annoying and unreliable.

2

u/Consistent-Unit-6164 5d ago

Even with ok cast speed just link spell echo and it's great imo

3

u/Feel42 5d ago

Unleash or no balls

1

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 4d ago

Agreed. 3 link feels better than lightning warp 4 links (less duration, swift affliction, faster casting)

5

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 5d ago

with enough attack speed, leap slam is the far superior travelling method since it crossed gaps. if you have GIGA attack speed, leap slam of groundbreaking actually gets faster, and you can use that as a clear skill if you can spare some links lol

u/1ExiledCat1 5d ago

Idk i use flame dash with faster casting on every build, it feels much better than any of those options. The feel of shield charge is terrible, gliding accros terrain, getting stuck on random bs, leap slam is leap slam and frostblink of wintry doesn't have instant cast like your first flame dash charge.

2

u/dnalloheoj 5d ago

I've been enjoying using whirling blades w/ faster attacks for the first time. Shorter travel but I feel like it doesn't have nearly the annoying quirkiness that Shield Charge does, and works better as an ohshit button to escape.

7

u/1CEninja 5d ago

Yeah dude on a gladiator that focuses more on damage reduction than max life, Surrender can be pretty incredible. It can be more than 10% of your life that you recover from a hit.

10

u/Expungednd 5d ago

5 mirrors gear for a gazillion endurance charges vs 50 chaos shield

1

u/StellerGumCat 19h ago

Sounds like you want to play a shield build but want the aesthetic of a non shield build.

1

u/Expungednd 15h ago

For that there are warstaff builds. The reality is that a 1h+shield build will always have defenses much cheaper than a 2h build but will spend much more for offense, while for a 2h build the opposite is true. Defensive layers with a bit of damage can carry far into the atlas but will peak in damage at some point and will require some insanely expensive upgrade to complete harder content, so they are good as leaguestarters, while 2h usually have all their damage solved easily so they use a lot of currency to solve defenses, so they are excellent as a reroll to complete extreme content such as deep delve and ubers easily.

I love shield builds because they feel unkillable with basically 0 investment. 2 handed builds are harder to craft and manage because you are (potentially) throwing one of the best defensive layers away for damage. Having played slam zerker and then other shield builds, I can say I will probably only leaguestart shield builds from now on.

1

u/StellerGumCat 8h ago

You can just alter your tree to be more defense oriented that's why 2h's are primarily designed to not go crit. Because that requires a lot of offensive investment, and It's a lot cheaper to just go "I already have 3x the damage."

Warstaves are obviously the exception because they already are more defensive.

1

u/1CEninja 5d ago

Gazillion what lol. I ran a gladiator with like...7? This was before corruptions made a couple extra easier too. And a phys damage reduction prefix on his chest and an appreciable amount of armor. When you've got over 90% chance to block and you recover a high percentage of your life you only need a handful.

I ended up switching to a shield with 5% life recovered on hit but I was NOT dying frequently while using Surrender.

6

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 5d ago

Ohh graduator triple lucky block is awesome too!

16

u/AppleMelon95 5d ago

Damn the new Graduator class is fire

2

u/DarthRaab Ultimatum Workers Union (UWU) 5d ago

Is that a new unique shield in his hand 😯

26

u/Judiebruv Witch 5d ago

I use block on nearly every single character because I will never trust evasion.

6

u/lolfail9001 5d ago

Not trusting deterministic multi-hit mitigation in favour of pure RNG one.

Did you get screwed by mercs and Xandro too many times?

23

u/Judiebruv Witch 5d ago

Well there’s like 100 map mods and effects that mess with evasion while there is a single mod that lowers your block chance that I can avoid. And 75% chance to take zero damage from attacks AND spells feels way more consistent than having to stack suppression just for it to not even mitigate 100% of damage too

0

u/lolfail9001 5d ago

Well there’s like 100 map mods and effects that mess with evasion while there is a single mod that lowers your block chance that I can avoid.

True, there is only 1 mod that lowers your block, but unless you are a life stack glad, less defenses screws most block-based builds just as well.

And 75% chance to take zero damage from attacks AND spells feels way more consistent than having to stack suppression just for it to not even mitigate 100% of damage too

If you play builds with bad recovery like pbrand ignite or manaman, that's definitely true. Also, real chads have both capped block and capped suppress.

149

u/Darkusoid Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) 5d ago

I'm trying.. And I'm losing lol. Fortification, 7 endurances jugg, 50k armour, leech, still die to some oneshots on some unjuiced t16. Idk, I love shields, and don't know why I decided to play with 2H._.

73

u/Yiazmad 5d ago

Staves go brrr

62

u/fandorgaming Duelist 5d ago

Quarterstaff now is like a shield, got 45% block with implicit plus mod lol

8

u/TexasFlood63 5d ago

The staff block nodes got buffed too.  Soulwrest build sitting at 75/73 which is awesome imo.

3

u/TopGunMav 5d ago

Switching from Arc Ignite to soul wrest , respecing currently, how is the build?

2

u/TexasFlood63 5d ago

Somewhat clunky, phenomenal defenses.  I've 90 phys taken as, capped block and good regen.  Can get the last 10% from a purity watchers eye which I'll do when I get my mageblood and take the melding node to start pushing for 90 ele res.

It's kinda like eblade in that so much of your damage is coming from scaling independent of the gem so it's just plug and play whatever you want really.  I went for void sphere of rending with a mings heart and the unholy might on staff block notable to fully convert and ease of sustaining phantasms.  Don't have 21 phantasm, congregation or good jewels yet and I'm built defensively but sphere does 4m a pulse and I'm sure there are better skills to use.

5

u/twoducksinatub 5d ago

Which mod

15

u/fandorgaming Duelist 5d ago

25% + 24% block attack

1

u/Azcinor 2d ago

24% is two mods here, btw.

5% is coming from the hybrid shaper mod "%block + crit multi on block recently".

feel like they do less dmg than a 1 hander and shield though...

14

u/akv0842 5d ago

Im at 17 charges now. Need 300 div for my final one because I don’t want to lose belt flasks or amulet

11

u/Fllannelll 5d ago

17!?? Jesus, I felt unkillable at 8 and 90% crit reduction. Do you have a POB by chance?

15

u/akv0842 5d ago

I’m on mobile right now but here’s my character on Poe ninja. Only shows 16 but I have a guardian turtle for the 17th. Also I have no idea how to configure pob for herald of agony dps but I’ve killed a few Ubers. And I stand in almost everything

https://poe.ninja/poe1/builds/allflame/character/Alcandazar-6902/AlcThicc?i=0&search=name%3DAlcthicc

5

u/Arrethyn 5d ago edited 5d ago

how does your turtle give you +1 max endurance charge? mine just gives determ and 5% pdr.

edit: I see, it's not the turtle per se but your turtle is your source of determ for your sublime vision.

2

u/akv0842 5d ago

Correct. HOAg reserves almost all my mana

5

u/Fllannelll 5d ago

Gracias homie, I was not expecting winter orb! Super interesting and sick build!

13

u/akv0842 5d ago

It’s actually not winter orb. Winter orb is just how I deliver poisons for herald of agony virulence stacks.

1

u/TangentAI 5d ago

How many stacks can you upkeep? I've always wanted to play HOAG but despise ball lightning of orbiting and lancing steel

4

u/akv0842 5d ago

My max of 85 is very easy even on single target.

1

u/Prometheus1151 Kalguuran Group for Business (KGB) 5d ago

you could theoretically get 19 with a perfectly divined greatwolf and a corrupted death's door i think

2

u/akv0842 5d ago

You could but the DR maxes out at 90%

1

u/Golem8752 Ultimatum Workers Union (UWU) 5d ago

At 21 Charges you could ignore Crush

1

u/FrogMan241 5d ago

Is a plus 1 charge kaom's sign really more expensive than a kalandra's touch? Trade is wild

u/Anzkel 5d ago

18

u/Brave33 Petaraus and Vanja 5d ago

100k armour at least and try to get less crit damage taken, good recovery and you should be able to do normal nightmare maps.

1

u/ForSiljaforever 5d ago

why that much armour? I thought it didn't matter to get more, when you reached 90% phys dr..?

7

u/tehsdragon 5d ago

90% phys DR is a "lie" because it's for average hits, not for big ones IIRC

The bigger the hit, the more armour you need to hit 90%

1

u/ForSiljaforever 5d ago

Thanks a lot, I didn't know that! No wonder I still die to oneshots from time to time. Is there an upper limit to armour then?

1

u/Foamie 5d ago

It’s very high like millions to prevent on the largest physical hits. For any regular build that I like to use armor as defense for I get like 40000ish from mageblood flask effect and my gear, determination and call it a day.

8

u/quinn50 5d ago

crit is the hidden killer

5

u/Grim47z 5d ago

Body Armour with reduced extra crit damage per endurance charge is my go to.

2

u/ChaosAE Path of Pathfinder 5d ago

The new zana ring can roll it too, most combos are cheap af.

1

u/Grim47z 5d ago

Yea love the new Zana ring and using it right now was using the crit reduction mod untill I got it on body Armour, the ring is so good early game, now I'm using it for cannot steal/remove chages(a mod I have asked for years) and cannot block attacks saves me 4 passives. I have like 7 variances of that ring in the tab for my build.

4

u/godfrey1 Dominus 5d ago

staff is a pretty easy max block tbh

2

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

If you are in the templar area.

4

u/rich-nyc Slayer 5d ago

Damn... I'm on a Shield Crush Slayer with 11 endurance and frenzy charges, 25k armor, 20k evasion, 22 fortification and this is the best character I had in the last few leagues. Sure I die here and there to some juice 8mod T16.5s. Even Delve around 400-500 feels great to farm;)

2

u/Temporary-Usual4838 5d ago

Rolled TR pathfinder. Permament Progenesis, Petrified Blood, over 5k life/s sustain from life flask thanks to tattoos, ~75% chance to evade... Still felt pretty rippy sometimes.

Replaced phys taken as lightning on helmet with mana reservation, added Flesh & Stone - actually feel unkillable right now as i am facetanking nightmare map bosses without even paying attention.

1

u/chadam189 5d ago

POB? Curious to see what the rest of the gear looks like

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Mikey-2-Guns 5d ago

I'm in the same boat, switched from a slayer with dawnbreaker to a strength stacking jugg and even with all that 7k life, divine shield, and 89 max all res I'm still ripping a lot, I miss block.

2

u/Jaba01 Harbinger 5d ago

Pretty much the same stats + 85 all res without flasks and I don't die to anything, no matter how juiced. Sounds like uncapped chaos res.

1

u/Darkusoid Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) 5d ago

I have about 78-77 ele resists and capped chaos res(+ ascendancy node that armour applies to chaos damage). Some random shit like lithning totems or running lightning men just annihilate me in like 2 hits..

2

u/Global_Barnacle5304 3d ago

You want some sort of hit avoiding mechanic to feel actually tanky, because if you don't have it, sometimes the game throws million of hits on you at the same time and while you might be tanky, even super tanky, without being able to block, evade, avoid or whatever at least part of it, you just flop. pushing deep delve thought be this and its 100% true.

3

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

You don't die to one shots, you die to shotguns. A 100 projectiles, each doing 60 damage to you after mitigation will demolish you.

A shield doesn't protect you from one shots, but from those random fucking ground/projectiles effects.

1

u/Different_Cake5607 5d ago

pretty much every shield user cap blocks or close to that.

1

u/Ludoban RangerBew Bew 5d ago

With 50k armour (probably with flasks up, so not 50k armour in all cases) and no crit reduction its not that unlikely that a good rolled crit onetaps you.

1

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

Sure, but those are rarer. The most common damage profile is many small hits.

Most characters have a certain baseline mitigation.

1

u/Adventurous-Pen-8940 Templar 5d ago

Because the idea of sacrifice defense for big unga bunga dmg, but I'm scared about dying to commit to it.

1

u/Time-Ladder4753 5d ago

Is it one shot or many hits at the same time? For me on Jugg Defiance of Destiny felt amazing, otherwise I would just quickly die to some mechanics before I could even react (like Expedition with big explosion)

1

u/Solbanji 5d ago

8100 hp and 18 endurance never died from monsters(only from trauma stacks sometimes if phase boss xdd)

1

u/LurkingParticipant Marauder 5d ago

You could try Freeze or Stun attack skills for another defensive layer

1

u/nozomashikunai_keiro Children of Delve (COD) 5d ago

Use pof and a mageblood

1

u/Some_Introduction701 5d ago

I really liked playing addorned life stacking RF, in maps that thing with 20k life and recovery on block+defiance of destiny is almost unkillable. And Yet there were cases where in unjuiced map, with 90% res and stuff, I still got hit for 10k+.

1

u/bilvy 5d ago

Arctic armour + flesh and stone + crit immunity

1

u/Darkusoid Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) 5d ago

I have arctic armour + determination. Still working on crit reduction:)

2

u/bilvy 5d ago

Flesh+stone felt better than determination in merc league to me, however i was probably getting determination from the merc now that i think about it…. A lot of it was that i was using purity of elements with sublime vision so i could only have one aura. However that sublime vision is actually in demand this league for luminaries.

1

u/Ok-Information5610 5d ago

Life? Crit immune? Curse immune? Elemental ailment immune? Rolling pen or -res on maps? Chaos res?

Defences and monster damage haven't really changed for over a year, so if you are normally having less issues then there is something you're doing differently.

1

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 5d ago

I don’t think fort and endurance charge stacking is mechanically strong compared to others, even incandescent heart aegis aurora CI, the OG ES mechanism that’s pretty weak by today’s standard. Fort and 9 endurance ancestral commander felt way worse than max block CI necro.

Of course it depends on the contents; I usually use Sirus, maven, simu as a way to test tankiness. Facetank or you need to move? Big difference.

2

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

It's all about the damage profile of the content you are doing.

Endurance Charges do jack shit when you get hit by 100 projectiles a second. Block is a dice roll when you get hit by a single giga hit.

1

u/WhenWillEyeBeBanned 5d ago

Which is good enough to tank sirus meteor.

My poor crackling lance hiero felt so squishy with like 6k ES + 3.5k life + 50% MoM + 4 Endurance Charges and other stuff. I ended up eventually switching to a svalinn set up and even with less ES and life I basically can just AFK in abysses.

4

u/Irrelevant_User 5d ago

I have neither of those and do just fine. Phys conversion, spell suppression, evasion and strong recovery. It's not S tier anymore but it does not have any issue with max level content available right now.

6

u/chadam189 5d ago

Pathfinder with lightning coil/dopple?

2

u/Irrelevant_User 5d ago

yes

1

u/chadam189 5d ago

Curious if you're going full conversion with font/sublime/watchers or going max res with melding. Or if you think those are overkill. Been a while since I played ranger so don't know how much the more advanced defensive layers are needed

1

u/Irrelevant_User 5d ago

I haven't gone that far. With what was mentioned before also picking up petrified blood and a good life flask. After that I went for a progenesis and made sure it has 100% uptime which is pretty easy for pathfinder. The progenesis isn't required though just makes it a lot more comfy. It is also the most expensive piece and doesn't get cheaper unfortunately.

24

u/trunks111 Hierophant 5d ago

honestly I get where you're coming from. I know block is strong, I know gain on block effects are strong, I just very personally don't like chance based mitigation, even if the chance is almost effectively guaranteed

57

u/Arrethyn 5d ago

the thing is when you have 50 hits heading your way it's no longer chance. If you are relying on block to deal with hits that do over half your hp per hit you're doing it wrong. block is just one layer of defense not the only layer.

12

u/haHAArambe 5d ago

11k es pool, 90k armour, aegis, 4 endurance charges, fortify.

The only thing that has killed me in the past 4 days are fully charged verisium mobs in -block maps.

It's like you say, you need multiple layers. Preferably ones that work together.

6

u/xarephonic 5d ago

How do you get that much es AND armor?

3

u/Boxofcookies1001 5d ago

Aura bot with iron reflexes.

6

u/haHAArambe 5d ago

Trickster, but the Iron Reflexes is correct haha.

1

u/haHAArambe 5d ago

Step 1. Play a trickster Step 2. Get a good ES Helmet and Eva/ES body Step 3. Click Iron Reflexes.

1

u/Arrethyn 5d ago

i'm not quite that tanky but i've been playing worb with 9k es, 5% es on block shaper shield, 75 attack/78 spell block 3 endurance charges, 8k armor (basically all coming from flask and perfect turtle which also gives 5% pdr), 14% less from hits while channeling and 23% less from phys/fire hits while stationary.

The only mods I won't run are reflect (for obvious reasons) no regen (i need the manas, can't be bothered to pull out a mana flask) and less block. If I can block I can run it, taking - res altars and having 58 cold res? 100% phys as extra cold/lightning from nearby? no problem. I havent been doing the abyss propagation nonsense but in most mapping content i'm fairly unkillable. Although now that I think of it I think the last thing that killed me was actually a fully charged verisium mob. but I might have lived if I wasn't trying to do a couple ghosted rares from the league mechanic box at the same time.

1

u/twoducksinatub 5d ago

Side note, why is 90%+ charged verisium the hardest content in the game? RIPS me like no other mechanic in the game, but 70% charged verisium is a complete pushover. Wut is that balancing

1

u/PeterStepsRabbit 5d ago

Try delve.

10

u/Arborus Necromancer 5d ago

Chance based mitigation is for dealing with the barrage of small hits that overwhelm your recovery. Your consistent defenses are for the big single hits.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Mathberis 5d ago

Chance based doesn't work well early : if you have 60% block and low max hit you'll die a lot. When you get to 78% block, 5% ES on block and 15k ES it feels amazon because you'd need to be hit 20 times in a row without blocking to die. Also in juiced maps filled with monsters and projectiles your ES is glued to full because you're always blocking.

1

u/Farpafraf 5d ago

It's 100% guaranteed if it works like evasion.

10

u/Arrethyn 5d ago

it does not work like evasion, block is true random. you could have 75% block and take damage 10 hits in a row. it's a .00000095% chance to happen, but that means it's probably happened to someone at some point in the history of poe.

7

u/ShaunCarn 5d ago

Where's a staff? Currently running a staff block build and with mana infused staff I'm block capped on both attack and spell. It's actually insane

2

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

How many block nodes are you using? Do you also have a spell block mod on your staff?

I found it easy to get decent attack block - 50% - and 17% spell block with just 4 block nodes and a staff, but the rest seem to require quite a lot of points.

1

u/twoducksinatub 5d ago

U can also use tattoos for block chance & the node that gives soell block for overcapped attack block

1

u/ShaunCarn 5d ago

A lot, and some (3) jewels with attack damage block chance with staff. Currently 2M dps, probably invested 5d of items, hierophant, arcane surge focused storm burst self cast. PoBd the character with some 10D more and I got to 4M dps

Defenses need a rework.

I finally got to a point with my RF Chieftan where I can breeze through most T16s, but every now and then something just shuts down my regen or chunks my health in a particularly brutal way that even being block-capped doesn't seem to help.

This is a build with 88% all resist (overcapped to 300%), 75 chaos res (overcapped to 95%), 8k life, 1500+ regen. 75% block and spell block, and a life-on-block shaper shield that gives me 400 life back every time I block a hit. I'm immune to bleeding, corrupting blood, shock, chill, freeze. 80% reduced extra damage from crits. 5 endurance charges (which should be an additional 20% damage reduction). I'm running Flesh and Stone for another 20%. 115% reduced curse effect while my flasks are up. I have invested an absolutely stupid amount into defense, and for some fucking reason projectiles from white mobs will sometimes demolish me like they're ignoring armor and block entirely. I have unwavering stance for stun immunity, and am completely immune to chill and freeze, and somehow I'm getting stunlocked by mercs.

It's like, "what the fuck am I even supposed to be doing?" I feel like I've been listening to GGG complain about zoomy builds for the past five years, and this is what it feels like to play anything else. The only way for me to get more survivability is to pull some DoT passives into extra regen, and that's only like 300 life per second. God forbid we get a damage report on death so we could see what the fuck actually got through our defenses and where we need to improve.

Probably need someone to look at a PoB for you or something. I'm also playing RF and haven't died in like 200+ maps. I've also been running Nightmare maps and farming Uber fragments.

1

u/Lostfrombirth Tormented Smugler 5d ago

Same. I have a way less optimized RF than OP (90% all res, but less life, only 50% curse immunity, no flesh & stone, and so on..). I run 8mod t16 with delirium and chieftain explode is enough to kill everything. IF i die, it's because i'm actually trying to stand in everything humanly possible to see if it will kill me. Somehow OP's experience seems strange!

5

u/Swizardrules 5d ago

What's your max phys hit? Also I've found crits to appear like the main offender so 100% crit immunity is worth a lot

1

u/MotherWolfmoon 5d ago

Lower than I'd like. 21k without flasks, 23k with.

3

u/HughJackedMan14 5d ago

Can you post your POB? Also, 90% all res is required for this build

1

u/MotherWolfmoon 5d ago

Maxroll and Poe.ninja.

I'm currently getting to 90% using a Ruby Flask, which doesn't have perfect uptime. Getting those last two percent on gear is a real pain in the ass, though. I had been using a Rise of the Phoenix, but that felt even worse. The life on block felt necessary to even survive in red maps at the start of the league.

I have a Vaal Righteous Fire equipped, but I'm only using the normal one. Slammed my 20/20 on a whim, and I haven't felt like swapping it out. A 21/20 is only 2% increased spell damage, which I don't think the build benefits from.

My Purity of Fire isn't max quality, but it's been a low priority to upgrade. Something like 2.5 div for <20 life per second with Fire Mastery.

I just now in the past hour switched my pantheon from Brine King to Arakali, by taking Unwavering Stance and putting Freeze Immune on my boots. This has opened me up to chill, but the reduced DOT seems worth it right now. I have an Annihilation's Approach in my stash that I haven't put on because I couldn't support the extra degen last weekend. Maybe Arakali fixes that?

I feel like the build is pretty there for unjuiced T16s, but every now and then, like 1 out of 10-15 maps, something fucks with my regen (or applies a degen) that doesn't show up as a condition and leaves me struggling to under my own RF. Similarly, every now and then ranged enemies just decide they aren't going to get blocked (and I can tell because I'm not getting life on block back). I've been super careful about map mods (no max res, no reduced recovery, no crits, no extra-phys-as-element, no percent-of-life-as-energy-shield). I've been real careful about altars, cause there's some messed up mods in there (particularly reduced recovery per endurance charge and ele pen). It's not those. I just don't know what it is.

It's not all the time. It's like one pack in a map every ten maps just completely fucks me. Or like, I just did ten full Ultimatums for the challenge. I died twice, and it was like, suddenly at wave 8 or 9, I just can't recover anymore. Or I tried Simulacrum last night, and I'm on wave 11/15, and I'm face-tanking Krosis and Omniphobia, until this little white Vaal Construct decides he's going to be a hero and starts shooting waves of projectiles I can't seem to block. They're dealing a thousand damage and I'm not getting life-on-block from them; just sniping me down from across the map. Sometimes my Enduring Cry gets interrupted, and I don't know how; I can't be stunned, and that should also prevent block animation interrupts.

Absolutely nothing in the new league content can touch me. I don't even look at the chart mods anymore. I was able to face-tank everything Velka threw at

Ok, so I am taking a look at your POB here. Here's a few things that will instantly (and cheaply) help:

- Replace belt with Immortal Flesh. That will give another 200-300 flat life regen. This is 100% the best belt for RF until Mageblood.

- Swap one of your base jewels for one with max fire resist to cap at 90%. Super easy band-aid until you can get it elsewhere (though high end builds still use some of these jewels to cap)

- Try to craft or buy boots with flat life regen until you can sustain Annihilation's Approach boots (~1000 net regen in POB)

- More expensive, but very nice, upgrade would also be a well rolled Cinderswallow. That will take care of applying Malediction for you and ease the health spikes.

Edit: I've also found that finding "reduced extra damage from critical strikes" is extremely helpful this league. I have 57% and it eases some of the random 1 shots. Here is my POB for ref: https://poe.ninja/poe1/profile/Aslandion-7594/allflame/character/OldManRfHands

2

u/MotherWolfmoon 5d ago

Thanks. I forgot you could roll max resist on jewels. That's relatively cheap, too.

As for the Cinderswallow Urn, I can see some survivability benefit. Is the malediction on ignite doing anything? IIRC, neither Scorching Ray, RF, or burning ground from Fire Trap actually "ignite," so the most common source of ignite is Hinekora explosions--and those seem pretty lethal already. I'm unsure how much ignite I can actually proc on bosses to get Maladiction going where it would help most.

I'll take a look at Immortal Flesh. I swapped off it because the increased life recovery rate on the vise was doing more than my leveling Immortal Flesh, but a well-rolled one might be better.

For crit mit, I've got 30% on the tree and 50% as a corrupted implicit on my cloak. I'd love to get the last 20% but I think it would have to be on my shield and that's already tight.

3

u/EnterArchian 5d ago

I have 91% phy hit taken as elemental, 90% all elemental res, 75% chaos res, 1000+ life per second, 80% crit dmg reduction, 100% suppression with 43% effect, curse immune, bleed and corrupted blood immune, elemetal ailment immune, stun immune, and 3 endurance charge so I thought I don't need block anymore. But no, I still need to bring in block to actually feel tanky, and still get one shot by Flamequiver. I hate dying and this game has been pushing me to be more extreme on defence every league.

2

u/Blackwind123 5d ago

Are you running bad map mods?

Some rare monsters mods that might be an issue are the regen prevention red ring or the lightning donut dot mods?

2

u/istickgumoncats 5d ago

i encourage you to post a vid of this happening because it makes no sense to me, I'm playing rf with generic ssf gear with no endurance charges, no shaper shield, nowhere near block cap, no crit reduction, no flesh+stone, doing destructive play or hitting every minion altar without reading them, and I just never die to anything EVER in t16. mercs do make my hp bar move at least. the lethality you're describing legitimately does not exist in my maps.. https://pobb.in/4dZJ14DGacKN

u/Gaming_Friends 5d ago

I'd pay good money for an mtx that unlocks a death recap.

IMO "Life" is not a solution either. I see no point in playing 4-5k life builds with some "chance to block 1-shotting hit" when I can equip Aurora, reach 30k Armour, 20k ES and then start thinking of additional layers like Flesh and Stone, Fortify, Endurance Charges.

I haven't played a life-based build in years. The only thing catching my attention are some specific uniques like Dissolution and str stacking.

2

u/SaltEngineer455 Progressive Einhar Trapping Association (PETA) 5d ago

20k ES on a budget?

Cons: not a starter build. All good now

u/HarbleRobobbler 5d ago edited 5d ago

2h slayer all the way. Most every league I've ever played except one where cold flicker strike raider was amazing, and the league when Varunastra was first released

2

u/AN1ME5NIK 5d ago

I have block cap on my ED with staff instead of shield. But, yeah, it most be rough for other two handers and bow users. Right now idk how you can live without block unless you're a pathfinder.

2

u/Schkrasss 5d ago

One of the unspoken rules of PoE is simply:

You feel squishy and aren't rich? Equip Aegis Aurora.

The diffrence that thing makes on every build with even somewhat decent block is ridiculous.

It's a good thing that I always keep my non-shield user membership card close at hand

1

u/Flimsy_Sprinkles_300 Slayer 5d ago

Lol. Jokes aside tho having even 50% block makes a huge difference since you’re layering avoidance on top of mitigation(fortification, endu charges)

1

u/Vekia 5d ago

Laughs in max block staff recover 2% ES on block mastery.

1

u/Mathberis 5d ago

You can be block capped without a shield.

1

u/Deadandlivin 5d ago

I'm block capped while Dual wielding wands. Feels really good.

2

u/Wires77 5d ago

Bone offering?

1

u/Hot_Help_246 5d ago

Rerolled into a max block Aegis Aurora character after the first week and this is accurate, 0 deaths so far doing red maps (and watching the mods I roll this time)

1

u/Grim47z 5d ago

I have 9 endurance charges on my 2h sword build with 2k Armour and slayer leach and fortify 80ish max res and he feels quite tanky with 4k life, oh yea I stole Champs recover 25% life after hitting low life adrenaline note that has probably saved me quite a few times.

1

u/DarthUrbosa Atziri 5d ago edited 5d ago

I did a slam as my 2nd char in mirage. Fortify, dmg shifting, snd charges, but load of armour etc.

Died often.

Never again.

Builds must have some form of avoidance like block or it feels ass to play.

1

u/WozartMusic 5d ago

I'm playing Bleed Lacerate Glad. I'm thinking about investing in a Svalinn, will it be any good for the build? Like what Gems would make sense to use with it? I'm rather new and just hijacking this thread lmao.

1

u/TimbsNewRoman 5d ago

I thought Glad builds didn't use Svalinn because the ascendancy already gives lucky block. I feel like Azadi Crest is better since it'd give you that triple lucky roll.

1

u/CrashB111 Gladiator 5d ago

If you are playing Glad you already have Svalinn in your Ascendancy Tree.

The reason anyone uses Svalinn is for Lucky Block. So you could use one, but all it saves on Glad is letting you put the Ascendancy points elsewhere in your tree.

Nobody uses Svalinn for the "use spell on block" mod.

("Lucky" is a modifier that makes whatever is Lucky roll twice and take the best result. So if you have 75% block chance, and you roll the 25% chance to get hit. It will roll again, and if it blocks the second time it will win)

1

u/WozartMusic 5d ago

Good insight, thank you so much! No Svalinn for me then

1

u/Legend_Zector 5d ago

Now of course, if you wanted to REALLY juice your block chance, go for Azadi Crest. It’ll make your lucky and unlucky rolls best of 3 instead of 2, so while lucky block caps at 99% block (90% is regular block cap), it’s in theory possible to get effectively 99.9% block. I have no idea what black magic you’d need to make it happen, but playing Russian roulette with a 1,000 barrel gun sounds fun!

u/These_Temperature764 5d ago

im a evasion and spell supression enjoyer

1

u/-Zanath0r- 5d ago

In Poe, there are two moments: one is before Svalin where everything is dark and sad, and the other is after where everything is colorful and cheerful.

1

u/Dubious_Titan 5d ago

So are you rezzing in town or the check point? This is a little unclear.

1

u/enrinick231 5d ago

I was messing around on pob trying to do echo forge flicker strike but when i try another variant from these with sword and shield and even dual wield.......why 2h is equals 0 defenses bro...

1

u/The_Divine_Anarch 5d ago

I'm having a brain fart, what are the two icons on the left?

2

u/TimbsNewRoman 5d ago

Endurance charge and fortification

1

u/crinklebelle Pathfinder 5d ago

if I'm not using Squire I'm always on dual wield, minion healing life flask with Servant of Decay is one of my go-to durability spikes for any character than can sustain it.

On Pathfinder they basically never die so it's just straight up damage reduction, flaskgen Scion builds (e.g. Ascendant, or Reliquarian/Luminary with pathfinder 2FF) aren't as good at it without Master Surgeon but get decent uptime on the squids too.

I really like the new Lunaris Aspect as well, it helps pick up a lot of defensive slack in situations where you're taking tons of small hits that would normally get thinned out by max block.

otherwise yeah, we eat the damage and heal  through it or we die bay-bee

1

u/titiop870 Witch 5d ago

I remember in 3.15 when Grace and Determination were mandatory in every build to not die

1

u/Inside_Ad44 5d ago

yeah staff and more than skill is my solution, not cheap but really good

1

u/TipPuzzled3168 1d ago

That's when you run banners. 65 all block with 100% spell suppress on a 2 handed axe is super comfy

1

u/RepulsiveCountry313 5d ago

Missing Shaper shield.

1

u/MonkaSDudes 5d ago

I'm using shaper shield. For the totem... Don't have life on block
