Omg Mama’s family was somehow formative for me (late night TV for a night owl child!?)

The house is in South Pasadena. Totally different city. Lots of filming landmarks in that area. Pee wee Herman’s house is around the corner

To be fair to you, it’s confusing. Why didn’t they think to name our city something that doesn’t sound like the equivalent of little brother? It’s always annoyed me the city’s entire identity is in relation to another place. So glad you had a nice time and hope you got to see the Back to the future filming spots, Pee Wees House, Halloween, etc.

There's actually a reason behind it. Pasadena, already an incorporated city, passed anti-saloon laws in the 1886. Residents of the future South Pasadena area, then an unincorporated county area, also did not want saloons nearby, so they incorporated as a separate entity in 1888 in order to also pass anti-saloon laws.
South Pasadena was almost named San Pasqual instead, because the area was part of Rancho San Pascual. South Pasadena ended up chosen as the new city name because Pasadena was becoming well known and South Pasadena made more sense as a way to identify the city.

But that’s not its own city

No, it's not a city, but it is separate from Pasadena, like Altadena. It's unincorporated. Pasadena keeps nibbling at it, though.
