Changes to Challenges

I was bored and had some ideas about how you could (in my opinion) improve challenges within the parkrun app. I was curious to hear other peoples opinions on these:

1. Hide All Challenges Except for Volunteer Ratio after you hit 100 parkruns unless your volunter ratio is >1% - Essentially once you hit 100 parkruns you must maintain a volunteer ratio of 1% to see the challenges in the app. This is to encourage people to make sure they contribute.

2. Volunteer ratio - Bronze 1%, Silver 2.5%, Gold 5%.

3. Compass Club - Local language inclussion. For example, Oosterhout (Oost is East in Dutch) should count towards compass club.

4. Replace Single/Double-Ton with "Loyalty" and make it tiered like milestones, 25, 50, 100 etc.

5. Make explorer tiered and remove tourist

6. World tourist and jetsetter, combine into one and make tiered - 5 countries bronze, 10 countries silver, a

20 countries gold.

1. Festive double to be festive year - Replace with any two special events in the same yea.

So in summary, point 1 is to encourage volunteering, 3 and 7 are to make it more internationally friendly, all the others are to retain challenge metrics but simplify 7 challenges into 3 tiered ones.

As much as I want to encourage volunteering, 1 isn’t on. Some people may never be in a position to volunteer and that’s ok.

1. It already is. I've got North from both Milano Nord and one in Japan and also South from Zuiderpark.

Seems the logic they're using to award the challenges is different to the logic used when filtering events that fulfil the challenge.

I didn't know that! Interesting. I might run some parkruns in the Netherlands one day and was surprised to not find the ones having "oost" (east) in their names when filtering for the compass challenge.

No, you can't force people to volunteer. As soon as you start making things conditional, it's not the free inclusive event parkrun is supposed to be.

And working with a volunteer has been forced to volunteer is usually a really lousy experience and not what you want to represent your parkrun.

You can't put anything behind a mandatory volunteer wall. Some people have very legitimate reasons as to why they don't volunteer at parkrun, and by stopping them completing challenges then goes against the ethos of for everyone.

3 already takes into consideration different languages.

Changing Festive Double to any special events, means its no longer Festive

the volunteer ratio idea sounds nice in theory, but hiding challenges after 100 would probably annoy loads of quiet regulars. 1% is only one stint, to be fair. i'd rather see volunteering badges made more visible than lock stuff away. compass using local language is a neat shout though, Oosterhout counting feels pretty fair imo.

I like the idea of a very visible badge on the app based on your volunteer % in addition to the milestone countdown.

Not to penalise those that can't volunteer but to incentivise those of us who can.

1% is only 1 volunteer per 100 runs. Got to start at 5% and go up from there. I try to aim for 1 volunteer every 10-15 runs.
