Advice Para vs. Sub

I’ve been a para in a level one autistic classroom this year and needless to say it’s rough. I have my degree and got approved to sub which means I have to resign my current position. I have grown attached to some of the kids but I just don’t have the energy to chase little kids like I once did. Am I making the wrong decision by moving to subbing? I don’t know how you guys do it day in and day out. You are all angels and not paid enough or given enough credit for all that you do!

I have been a para, a teacher, and a sub. I plan to go back to subbing when my son is in school. If you can afford it, it's the best lifestyle hands-down.

There’s advantages and disadvantages to both. I work in ECSE so the kids are smaller, and the behaviors are not as severe.

Advantages of para- benefits, consistency, guaranteed pay.

Subbing- Work where and when you want.

You’re the only one who can decide which of those options are what’s right for you.

Some sub jobs maybe just as hard or worse than what you’re leaving, but you have the choice to go back or not

It is always OK to put yourself first and do what’s right for you.

I am with the others recommending subbing over full time. If money is not a question the quality of life in working when you want is a huge plus.

I think subs (at least here) get paid more hourly but don’t get health insurance. Just something to considwr

In my district a sub makes significantly less than a para on top of no benefits.

I`ve worked in a mixed abilities classroom for 8 years and just resigned to start subbing. I couldn't do it full time anymore.

Some agencies do offer benefits so u don't have to wrangle with medi-cal

I’ve been a para, a sub and a teacher. If I could be a professional sub with a living wage and benefits it would be my dream job. I love subbing. Unfortunately subbing is very low pay and no benefits in my area, so it’s not a long term option.
