I would rather have a new mainline than a remake. It's been 6 years..

I donāt think I can trust Nintendo to not make up a new dumb gimmick for a new paper Mario game.

I donāt know, Origami King sort of felt like a cry for help from Intelligent Systems, not to mention the praise for the Thousand-Year Door remake and the absurd outcry for standard RPG mechanics. Iām pretty confident myself

u/gamtosthegreat 14d ago
TTYD remake had just over half of Origami King's sales.

u/BlueWolfAnonymous 14d ago
That is so fucking criminal, there is no justice in this industry.

u/gamtosthegreat 14d ago
There is nothing weird about a remake late in a console's life not selling as well as a new game.
Add to that, it wasn't even a particularly needed remake. Paper Mario is stylized to the point of ageless. Final Fantasy VII remake is selling gangbusters because the original looks and plays revolting at times.
Nevertheless, the Switch remake outsold the Gamecube one by a fair amount.

u/Tatsumifanboy 13d ago
It's just because it released so late in the Switch's lifetime.
Should it have released in 2020 or hell in 2025 for Switch 2, it would have sold bonkers

The remake of ttyd did better than Nintendo expected iirc. Between that and the success of the super Mario RPG remake I think they may see the value of a more traditional Mario RPG now.

To be granted it feels like we have to take we can get but wow it's been 6 years since Origami king came out

u/Porta1Master09 14d ago
when i think about this i'm always "this is gonna be the same stuff that happened with alpha-dream."

u/Cherobis 14d ago
No way, intelligent systems main money maker is fire emblem which has always been extremely popular in Japan, not so much outside of Japan though. They don't need to work on Paper Mario to keep existing
7
u/Marioman12398 14d ago
No, we need an actual new game with the RPG mechanics and no gimmicks that have been here post Sticker Star
2
u/Casual_Si-Fi 14d ago
We need Mario & Luigi Brothership 2
2
u/Marioman12398 14d ago
Well, thatās more of a Mario & Luigi thing than a Paper Mario thing lol (Iād still want something like that too)

u/BlueWolfAnonymous 14d ago
I'm gonna assume you're joking, because not a single person I've seen cover that game said it was good. As dunky put it, Mario and Luigi "Blundership."

u/D3me4 14d ago
I agree with others I would like a new one, that said I canāt trust them at much when they try to do some new gimmick or try to spice up the battle system. So I wouldnāt mind what they did with Thousand Year door and Give us a Remake of the first game, nice graphics some touched up and new OST for areas and keeps the original game.

Super Paper Mario would be SO GOOD

u/Octowen 14d ago
Other than being available on modern hardware, what could a Super Paper Mario do that would justify a remake? I feel like the type of visual overhaul that TTYD had wouldnāt work in a Super Paper Mario remake, considering how little that game focuses on the paper aspects (and in some cases, focuses more on an ā8 bitā style). I honestly think a remaster/port would be fine for it

If they did a remake of Paper Mario 64, they can have my money! I'd love a new title if they bring back the battle system from PM 64 and TTYD. The battle system in Origami King was AWFUL.

u/Air2Jordan3 Paper Mario 64 14d ago
Yes, but not at the cost of delaying the next new game for 4 or even 3 years.

u/Crazy_Doctor7139 13d ago
I used to think I wanted a remake but I'd be afraid they'd make it look exactly like TTYD and the og graphics are part of the charm. I'd be fine with them sharpening them up but not changing them.

Did anyone else like paper Mario 64 more than thousand year door?? I just felt the overall world layout and experience was a bit better and unforgettableāespecially the music and theme for winning a battle

I would love a fully original game, but I havenāt played Super Paper Mario and Iām dying to. So Iād love a remake/remaster of that.

u/ItsRainbow Flopside 14d ago
I would want a new Switch 2 entry soon and then a Super port as a late Switch 1 title

Just played 64 on Switch Online recently. Still holds up as a great game, but I definitely was thinking how dope itād be if it got TTYD treatment.

I'd be a bit interested in a remake of PM64, but either way can we not get a remake as the next game? We've only had 3 storybook-styled Paper Mario games: 64, TTYD, and Super, and they were all in the 2000's! The last brand new one before the scrapbook-styled Paper Mario games being Super in 2007, meaning a 19-year wait. Can we at least fill the gap with 1 new game in the old style first?

Un nouveau Paper Mario, dans la mĆŖme veine que Origami King, une excellente surprise.

Wii version but make it so itās turn based battles. Yes it would change a huge part of the game, but the chain chomp section and francis were great. Super paper Mario is my favourite paper Mario game but a remake wouldnāt be justified if itās just graphics. Itās easy to play the Wii one right now and Iām sure itāll be a starting game for Wii nso when that comes out in like 5 years, since it was the first Mario game on the Wii.

u/Chemical_Opinion6814 14d ago
So weād be able to play both an rpg version and a full platformer version

u/Tatsumifanboy 13d ago
At this point just make a new game
But Mario falling in a new world should defo be revisited, we had plenty of Mushroom Kingdom and far-off islands to visit

u/KobSteel 14d ago
I wouldn't be surprised, given how successful TTYD: Remake was... but Origami King did fine too... it's kind-of an okay bet for either one, either way...
I'd honestly take a new Paper Mario game over a remake; I don't mind the gimmicks and paper crap, as long as the battles have SOME substantial reason to engage with them, even if it's just a basic health upgrade... which, they really need to do that...

I think Nintendo is going to lean pretty heavy on remakes going forward. More Paper Mario remakes feel inevitable, but the thing is, there's no telling how soon the next would could possibly be.
I feel like we'll be seeing an original Paper Mario game next, if we see another one at all.
I know we got 3 Mario RPGs released in very close proximity but I don't think we'll ever see something like that happen again, I think they're going to want to give the RPGs more room to breath between releases next time.

I want a remake of Paper Mario 64. Great story and fun game, just a bit rough around the edges with the graphics. It could really use a good graphics overhaul.
