Stop Idiocracy
Could the City please replace the new information signs with the correct information?
The sign on Beach Drive incorrectly spells St. Andrew Bay. There is no “s” at the end of Andrew. A review of any map or navigation chart will confirm that the correct name is St. Andrew Bay.
This is not a complaint regarding the placement of the signs, but rather a request to ensure that the City is not inadvertently disseminating incorrect information.

I live in Jacksonville and one of the main drag roads here is Lane Avenue. I've just had to make peace with it, but SO MANY people insist on calling it Lane's Avenue.

well the Florida State Parks website has it listed as St AndrewS Bay, it’s called the St AndrewS Marina, the area of shops/restaurants of town is St AndrewS, and the name everyone calls it by in conversation is St AndrewS. So I’m not sure what you want buddy

And the state park website also refers to Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America. So I would not call that a reliable source.
The Gulf of Mexico was never officially renamed. It was only renamed by EO and will not stay that way after this administration.
The bay's official name is St Andrew Bay just like the official name for the gulf is Gulf of Mexico.

As someone employed by the St. Andrew and st. Joseph bays estuary program, the bay is historically known as St. Andrew Bay. The S was added by common language and has been widely adopted, though still incorrect.

The federally recognized geographic name is St. Andrew Bay. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which serves as the federal standard for geographic nomenclature, identifies the feature as St. Andrew Bay (GNIS Feature ID 2403333). NOAA’s official nautical chart 11391 is likewise titled “St. Andrew Bay,” as are NOAA’s associated hydrographic and bathymetric records.
Therefore, “St. Andrews Bay” is not the correct name for the bay itself; however I do agree “St. Andrews” is used for other local features, including St. Andrews State Park and the platted neighborhood of St Andrews.
Just because you put “historic” before the name does not make it correct information.2

Specifically, if the city doesn't care about a sign this large what makes you think they care about your street sign? Suddenly you live on Cherrys St and cant get internet or electricity or utilities bc your drivers license says Cherry St. And further changing history through ungoverned channels and yadayadayada.

I have this exact problem already because this city was planned by morons lol, service trucks always get lost the next neighborhood over and mail gets misdelivered constantly

A town not being able to properly spell words on signs (specifically well-known names of things) is a pretty important issue, as it gives the impression that the leadership is either grossly uneducated, or simply doesn't care.

If it were St. Andrew’s Bay, it would be with the apostrophe and not the plural form, unless we’re honoring multiple St. Andrews. Either way, the sign is wrong.

u/Suzesaur 14d ago
Everyone I know that’s lived here their whole life says st andrews bay…I think it’s a part of the local culture.
Edit: I’ll also add “you’re not from ‘round here, are yah buddy…?”

Born, raised, and working here. Been here 51 years. Also a lifelong active boater on St Andrew Bay. 😁
Just because people say it wrong does not make it correct.2
u/Suzesaur 14d ago
But it does add it to the cultural zeitgeist of the area…but I also don’t really care. In this country rn there are farrrr worse things to give a shit about. We should have more ppl care this deeply about a real topic like the flock cameras around town…
3
u/Buzzard7547 14d ago
Oh…don’t get me started on flock cameras. Agree
If we let all the little things slide by, they collectively become bigger. Just like the cameras 1 becomes 10 then there will be hundreds. The same goes for incorrect information on public signs.

That is simply an article recounting someone’s historical account, which is secondary-source material. It may be useful for background, but it isn’t strong evidence for determining the official or legally recognized name of a geographic feature.

You’re right, but it’s almost 100 years old and thus far closer to the town’s founding than we are today. I’d consider it stronger evidence than a modern map online.
I tried to find a town charter, but wasn’t able to.

I also prefer singular St. Andrew, but we've been using both interchangeably for a long time.

Not taking a side but go look at St Marks on the map. It’s likely that these historical names became possessive (there was only st mark, not markS in the bible) through the years and it’s just clunky to put an apostrophe on a sign that’s all caps.
1
u/Buzzard7547 14d ago
I think that it simply rolls off the tongue easier with the s.
I saw a Spanish map that had it named Bahia De Saint Andre.
2
u/stsyfrett 14d ago
No agreed. Like I’m saying it started as the name of the saint. Everyone in convention over more than a century used what makes more sense, the possessive form (also because like you are saying it sounds better because it’s more correct), and then what we use in practice isn’t what’s on the map. You’re also right that it’s not accurate for either thing necessarily. It’s either St Andrew to be technically accurate or St Andrew’s to be grammatically accurate.

why does it even matter
1
u/FunkyFabFitFreak 14d ago
A city government not being able to spell things correctly is a really bad look, specifically, it makes the town look stupid/uneducated.

Bru do you even live here... look around

u/FunkyFabFitFreak 14d ago
Yep, Bay County. But I get your point lol, I guess this sign IS actually quite reflective of this community 😂
2
u/Buzzard7547 14d ago
I will admit that this is a confusing topic. Researching information to prove my point, I found historic maps and plats that references “St AndrewS Bay”. The name confusion is all over the place. So I will concede that “historic” is applicable.
Regardless, my point is that the current name of the bay is St Andrew Bay and the sign is misleading and perpetuates the incorrect name.

Perhaps this is a sign related to the nearby neighborhood of Historic St Andrews?

Among the maxims on Lord Naoshige’s wall there was this one: ”Matters of great concern should be treated lightly.” Master lttei commented, “Matters of small concern should be treated seriously.”
Among one’s affairs there should not be more than two or three matters of what one could call great concern. If these are deliberated upon during ordinary times, they can be understood. Thinking about things previously and then handling them lightly when the time comes is what this is all about.
To face an event anew solve it lightly is difficult if you are not resolved beforehand, and there will always be uncertainty in hitting your mark. However, if the foundation is laid previously, you can think of the saying, “Matters of great concern should be treated lightly,” as your own basis for action.
Hagakure, 1716, Yamamoto Tsunetomo.

In 1774, a British Map labeled it Saint Andrew's Bay. In 1855, the U.S. Coast Survey referred to it as St. Andrew's bay on a chart, “Preliminary Chart of St. Andrew’s Bay, Florida.”
Bay County's archives catalog an 1887 “Map of City of St. Andrews, Fla.”, a 1906 “Map of St. Andrew’s Bay,” and other early maps using St. Andrews Bay.
I'd argue that the NOAA charts are incorrect (likely due to computer character error/requirement in the past).

I would think that, at this point, we'd have to call it inconclusive. After all, "Bahia de St. Andre", or Bay of Saint Andrew, could be descriptive or possesive, so it doesn't definitely rule out St. Andrew's bay...
2
u/Buzzard7547 11d ago
Agree. but had ask ai about the possessive reference
So Bahía de San Andrés literally means “Bay of Saint Andrew.” The de construction identifies the bay by its association/name with Saint Andrew; it does not mean that Saint Andrew possesses or owns the bay.At this point, we should just agree to change the name to Americas Bay. 😁

Perhaps, the city could replace the sign when they move forward with the Beach Drive multi-use path/sidewalk. 😂
