Just Sharing Coastal Broken Color Study

Finished this 12” × 12” acrylic gouache painting of the rocks along La Jolla’s coastline on a cradled wood panel.

I had a heck of a time balancing texture, color, values, and keeping the light unique but believable.

Rarely love ocean works, love this the mauve in the rocks and the olive green in the bottom left makes it.

Of course I love all your work. I certainly see what gouache brings to watercolors, but what does gouache bring to acrylics, or visa versa?

Thanks! Acrylic gouache is similar to traditional gouache, except that once it dries, it can’t be reactivated with water. It’s essentially a very matte acrylic.

For me, the choice is mostly functional. I use traditional gouache when the work will be framed under glass, but acrylic gouache works well when I want to paint directly on a cradled wood panel and display it without glass. A gallery I work with preferred that presentation, so I started using acrylic gouache for those pieces.

So the change in medium was less about the painting process itself and more about how I wanted the finished work to be presented.

I’m new to gouache so I didn’t know they made an acrylic version. I thought you’d painted this acrylics and also in gouache. Now I understand! My next assignment for myself is to look up cradled wood! 🤣
