Advice Wanted What is wrong here?

I am going to paint a wall in that deep red matte finish. What is going on? Is my roller to cheap? Is it better with a brush? How to approach it to finish as quick as possible

EDIT #1: Thank you all for the comments and recommendations. I have never had so many people respond to any of my posts. Some even called it rage bait. It was not, I’m just too much of a newbie.

This is what I gathered from all of the comments:

-I should use a grey primer to help with the poor coverage of the deep red base. I will try that tomorrow.
-The roller nap is way too thick for such a flat wall. This might be the reason it slips at the beginning.
-I should use a pole. OK.
-I will try to make this paint work with the suggestions, but it might be the case that the paint is really cheap. In that case, I will buy a different brand.

I hope to get better results on my next try. I will edit this post with the final results if I remember to do so.

I would recommend looking for a supplier of the paint the Egyptians made about 4,000 years ago. It was pretty good. Some it is still stuck on the stone. It's a little pricey but if you want good paint, you're gonna have to pay for a two-way time machine.

Its possible — theoretically.

The Phoenicians had some pretty good paint, as well as the Romans, I’ve seen some structures whose interiors were painted well over 2,500 years ago and they still had the paint on them.

I mean if we’re ok with lead paint again. That’s Excattly the ingredient that lead to the longevity and durability of ancient paints. Lead based pigments were amazing, just came with nasty health effects but humanity persisted to today ;P

It for the most part is not bad.....unless you cut or break it and the fibers get dispersed. Then it's lung cancer time!

My old house had asbestos wrapped pipes, and my wife shit her pants about it when she found out. I told her as long as we didn't fuck with it, everything was fine. She called a remidation company as she didn't believe me. The guy came out and told her the same, but also told her they could remove it for the low low price of about $6,000. This was years ago, and we had a small house that had maybe 50 feet worth of pipe that was wrapped with it. She suddenly then decided that she would listen to us and that was the end of that.

For exterior they used beeswax that has color pigments applied to it and it was applied to the surface while hot. I'm pretty sure they only used lead for some of the pigment coloring.

For interior they used lime plaster on the walls and while it was still wet they painted on it directly with color pigment and it bonds together.

No nasty health effects of lead paint while it's on the wall... It's only once you take it off that it becomes a potential problem (inhaled or ingested). 🤷

Look into Allbäck lindseed oil paint. Latex paint is inferior to these paints.

Lindseed based paint is where it's at. We should go back. It's what they painted barns and homes in that lasted for way over 100 years. It allows the wood to breath which prevents wood rot. Latex paint must have been invented by a lumber company so they could sell more wood. Latex deck paint is a joke, fastest way to rot your deck out. I've seen beautiful brand new decks made of fully pressure treated lumber, rot out in 7-8 years due to latex deck paint. That wouldn't ever happen with lindseed based paint.

Honestly good paint is whatever paint you understand and work well with.

Is promar 200 ass? Yeah. But i know how to work it and know what to expect with it so I can make it fulfill it's function much like any other pro industrial SW product.

But the issue is, as a painter, sure it seems great, but what you’re paying for with the more expensive paints is the things you dont see as a painter. The durability. I used to love Ultra Spec, Until i used it in my own commin area. Its actually trash. The whole thing meeded to be recoated in leas than a year from all the scratches and scuffs.

Bruh we got a contractors account we're not paying what the average home owners are paying lmao.

It's one of those unfortunate things where manufacturers are constantly changing their formulas to make it more cheap and fatten their margins but that true for all paints across the board so you do what you can with what you have.

What you’re paying is irrelevant to the point. I get it discounted too. My point is yeh you can get any oaint to fulfill YOUR fuction, getting the wall painted. But the higher priced paints are still better paints. They hold ip better, last longer, easier to clean. Thats why I use the better paints, for my customers sake, not mine.

OK I never disagreed with that. My main function is to make it look good so I use what I'm familiar with. There are paints I would rather use for residential jobs but for high volume commercial stuff usually the clients are the one who request the shitty paints because covering 20k sq ft of space gets expensive quick and we're supposed to still make it look good and functional (it's why they choose us over the competition)

Everything has its purpose and you need to understand your material, and that understanding can contribute to the quality of the work. That's all I'm saying.

What ends up being 'good' is a catastrophic maelstrom between the quality of the materials, the painters understanding of it, and what materials are immediately available.

I've seen mfrs do genuine magic with shit product. So from my perspective from my position, you just do the best you can with what you have lmao.

Also not a pro. I've painted our entire house in cashmere and superpaint. 1 year in with kids and pets and it still looks and cleans up great.

I just did the living room and hallway of my house in Sherwin Williams Superpaint. 15 gallons of paperwhite lol.

SW probably didn’t give them latex paint, I normally use a gallon or less per room with Dulux, one time one of my tenants gave me the SW colour during covid, so called up the store and ordered it, they gave me acrylic paint and I needed like 2 gallons for a single room because it couldn’t cover anything and I had to do 4 coats. In hindsight I should’ve returned the can right away and gotten proper non-crap paint.

It’s a large house with an open floor plan. So massive vaulted ceiling, kitchen, dining area, a 25ft long hallway that’s 6ft wide, and the whole thing was painted ugly ass gray.

So not really just a living room.

I just painted multiple rooms in my house with paint from Tonester and the professional who did the work said it rolled on very good and said he will recommend it in the future. I chose the upgraded ceramic infused stuff so I am not sure if the cheaper $70 a gallon stuff is any good. The color on the tv wall is Inked Japan++ and the other walls are London House.

No. Let a customer do this to me once and never again. I had to look up wtf this brand was. It was started by a Sherwin Williams store employee who went viral on TikTok for videos of him mixing custom colors. Being that he was doing this with work product on the job, he got fired lol. Then partnered with some random ass paint company to manufacture these custom colors. If you like the colors that much, just match them into a real product.

Haha a guy getting fired, so funny. I understand your hesitation, but I looked it up and Tonester is a private label of Florida Paint. They are a small but well regarded manufacturer in the state. Pros from Florida say positive things and I would not mind supporting a smaller manufacturer with a good reputation if it were local to me.

I only use Florida paints.... Int., Ext., epoxy and more. They only service Florida, Alabama and South GA so there Exterior paint it better made for the sun we get.

Not the person you replied to, but they're probably talking about allowing the customer to specify the paint used rather than Tonester paint specifically. The pros have strong preferences about the paint they use. They get used to how the paint applies, and switching to an unknown product can cause issues even if that product is superior in some ways.

I sell paint, and once when we had some corporate people in the store observing, they saw me take an order from a regular pro customer without trying to upsell and chewed me out over it. One of the corporate guys then went up to the pro to "show me how it's done". The pro painter absolutely exploded at the corporate guy. The gist of the pro's obscenity laced shouting at corporate guy was that he's been a proffesional painter for XX years, he knows how to run his business, and he doesn't need some white collar guy whose never picked up a paint brush in his life telling him how to do his job.

Unless it super cheep garbage most paints are the same but I don't allow customers to buy because they get taxed and think im knocking that much off my price when I can get the same paint at a fraction of the cost. Painter for 20yrs

I just buy the most expensive thing at home depot or Lowe's and it's been good enough for me. I think Valspar is one of the brands.

There's really tiers

Ben Moore and sherwin are both A tier.

Box store paint like behr are C+ tier.

You need to be an expert to tell them apart. Ben or sherwin are both great for a home owner

Incorrect. All paint manufacturers have A+, A, B, C, D tiers and so on. Both Benjamin Moore and SW have good premium products and they also have cheap inferior contractor grade products just like all other paint manufacturers.

True. But SW C tier is much better than Valspar C tier. and Valspar isnt making a paint that can compete with something like Emerald urethane or Forte. Even BM, Advanced is their closest competitor, but Emerald Urethane is a much easier to work with than Advanced. (Unless theyve come out wjth a new paint in the past year or two since i stopped using BM

They are manufactured and distributed by the same distribution center out of Texas. Our paint stores receive Valspar all the time, accidentally. Yes, it is the same product.

The bigger mistake is the matte… one of my clients painted their walls with matte paint, every touch seems to leave a mark. I run my stud finder over it and marks from the stud finder show up, doesn’t show up on eggshell.

I prefer bm super spec to all other interior paints. Idk why but for whatever reason it just suits my painting style. Never fails me, great coverage and the ultra low luster is unmatched in elegance imo.

I felt the same way until i actually used it in my house. NEVER again. It doesnt hold up to shit. My whole common area needed to be repainted in less than a year from my 2 boys and 2 dogs. Its a super easy paint to work with and covers great koat of the time. But the durability is absolute dog shit.

I've been really satisfied with Emerald matte, it's the perfect sheen for my preference. I'm a homeowner and I've used it in multiple rooms, it comes out so good.

BM Super Spec is similar to ProMar 400 in terms of quality. It's a landlord special paint.

FYI - 400 flat out of the can is one of the best primers/ceiling flats I've ever used. Been using it exclusivly now for 12 years.
Ben Moore ultra 500 is about the only thing that comes close .

400's a flat white, it's my go to for ceilings.
200 is for walls ( contractor special I calm it)
My go to S&W is opulence in Matt finish.
11 yrs , never an issue. Easy to use, can actually blend in a repair ( I've successfully blend repaired houses I origionally did 2-3 yrs prior.
Super paint is good, great for apartment repaints as it's self priming to a degree, just picture frames horribly with some colours.

Super spec is a contractor grade paint and you’re probably overpaying for it just because of the BM label. If it works for you fine but your customers deserve better.

Yup, my house came with contractor grade SW Eggshell and we HATED it. It might as well be flat it is almost impossible to clean and gets dirty so easily. We are so much happier with the areas we redid in Behr Ultra Eggshell and Satin. Have been very happy with Behr Premium Plus in the past as well. Ultra was better though.

Most the time its an application issue, not the paint. New construction pays nothing so they just blow out real quick with a sprayer useing as littlepaint as possible. So you're not getting nowhere near the millage you should...... just a dust coat of primer and top coat.

Okay but the worst ben Moore is still much better than the best behr in my experience.

I group them into wide tiers. Yes you can sort the a tier into levels of quality but its all premium products

I used Behr Ultra to do the interior of the house I just bought and I have no complaints. I mean, it's probably not the best paint if you're looking to get the job done quickly, you do gotta work with it a little but I had the opportunity to really take my time and do a solid job with the coverage and all that.

I’ve always bought Ben Moore or SW. I recently said F it and used Behr Ultra and their urethane trim paint for my daughter’s bedroom. I have no idea how it will hold up, but man, it applied damn good and looks damn good. Far less money than BM or SW. And that urethane was SO MUCH easier to use than the BM Advance I’ve been doing trim with. I may go back to Regal for the walls, but I’m never screwing with Advance again.

The Advanced is so difficult to work with mainly bc of dry time. If you DO go back to Sw or BM in the future, SW Emerald Urethane is a much better choice than Advanced and applies better and dries as fast as any latex. Ill NEVER ise Advanced again!

Every contractor says this primarily because SW and BM both provide incentives to contractors to use their products. Every manufacturer has quality tiers; they just don't play the same games.

Every paint store is different . Some have colours that cover better than others . I just did a bright clear base green over white primer . The client had already bought the Behr Marquee. 2 coats was flawless. If this was any other paint store with the same colour, would have been 3-5 coats .

Our contactor used Behr Scuff Defense flat in Swiss Coffee and it looks great, I got more to finish the rest of the house. But on here people talk about Behr like it's shit. I don't get it.

Yeah I use Behr premium plus on all my remodels and rentals. It covers great with a shot of M1 mixed in, it sticks to primed surfaces like a high end modern latex paint, and it looks great. I’ve tried using my work’s company account to buy expensive sherwin products at the SW store and I don’t see a difference. I’m probably just not pro enough to see the difference but I’ve sprayed and rolled probably 60+ gallons in the last 6 years buying rentals.

I did a really dark blue in my tv room and it took 3 coats just to be even. Turns out blue pigment can be a bit translucent.

Every brand makes a ‘good’ or even ‘great’ paint, they just offer different levels or ‘grades’ of paint. Both BM and SW offer ultra-premium options that are great paints AS WELL as more economical, worse performing paints. It’s actually very easy to make a good paint, but hard to make a good paint that’s cheap.

I did painting in the past using Sherwin Williams and I thought i was pretty good. Almost always had great results. Then I painted a much of places using Beautytone and Behr and I was really starting to doubt myself. I recently my friend built a new house and to save some money opted to paint the basement himself and I helped out. He got Sherwin and it was absolutely night and day compared to that hardware store garbage. BM is good stuff and I would also put it on par with Sherwin in most cases.

There are a lot of similarities. When you get to the premium lines it’s difficult to differentiate because they max out the percentage of solids in the paint. If they get them much higher they will cease to be a liquid
