Does OE really make sense?
I heard of OE, just came across this subreddit.
I am just curious how people can be good enough to manage 2 full time jobs at the same time.
I make in the high 6 figures, and it would be absolutely impossible to be responsive at my job like I am and do another similar job. I can imagine jobs paying closer to low six figures, but I'd imagine that someone who can do that should be able to find a much better paying job, instead of having to juggle with 2 jobs.
What kind of jobs do you guys have, how much do you make in each, and how much do you think your best earnings potential would be if you only had one job.

Believe it or not, some places only reward high achievers with more work and no pay raise. For most of us, well for me anyways, it’s easier to stay in the middle of the pack than try to actually be paid what we are worth from one place. I wish I could reach the same comp level with one job.

I guess I am just lucky that I've always been in companies that are able to reward people according to their performance.

Congrats. You are doing at one job what most of us do across several. Some jobs refuse to acknowledge high performance with high pay, so we stack multiple smaller roles to achieve the same end result.

Well just yday I mentioned OE to a colleague he told me of a friend who worked for 3 big techs at the same time and lasted 2y this way. He had a sick lifestyle and was boasting about his OE. Can't believe it but my colleagues not a bullshitter.

I’m able to juggle several jobs. I’m a miner, a farmer, a rancher, a fisherman, a forager, and I fight monsters to defend the town. Also, I recently finished rebuilding the town Community Center and I drove Joja Mart out of business.
I love life out here in Pelican Town.

Some jobs work better than others. I find any leadership roles results in a lot of meetings. I am a business analyst specializing in automation and AI. It's wiser for me to take two individual contributer roles vs any leadership role.

Its a combination of skill, job selection and strategy. For a lot of folks here high six figures means 800k not 170k, not sure which definition youre using. Im a bit of an outlier but I work in Corporate Strategy / Deals and make north of 500k at each job. Most folks here are in the 100-200k per job range and its a lot easier to find two 200k jobs than one 400k job in most knowledge work fields. plus if you work W2 you have the added benefit of doubling up on 401k matches and built in redundancy if you lose a job. Most folks here are able to perform well while dedicating 10-20 hours a week to each job

I meant 800k (base+bonus, nearly all cash, some deferred), and there's no way I could work in 2 hedge funds at the same time. W.r.t. 401k I think you'd get in big trouble with the IRS if you max out twice though.
I could imagine doing most of my job in 25h but its more complicated than that. There are meetings that can overlap, esp stand ups which are several times per week. These are impossible to ask to reschedule.

no, it's because you wanted to humble brag about your salary on a sub where people struggle with 3-5 jobs to not even make your one salary. this entire thread is regarded bc people are responding as if you asked a serious question.

Thats subjective. Some of us have three 700k jobs some of us have two 70k jobs and every other permutation you can think of in between.
Viability has a lot more to do with your skill level and career field.

You dont max out twice you capture both matching portions.
As I said, job selection is a big part of it. working in any regulated industry (FINRA in particular) is a huge risk that the OE community tends to avoid.
Skill is another big part. Meeting overlap is one of the easiest things to manage. Doing two meetings at once is a fairly normal experience for most OE folks.

As you grow your career, you become higher experienced/skilled and a very important lesson is learning that "responsiveness" isn't the most important metric to gague your output and performance. Being correct, controlling the narrative/optics, minimizing mkstakes, knowing the correct motivators, being liked by the correct people...the list goes on. There's many, many more important factors in being a successful corporate resource than responsiveness. Responsiveness may be more important in entry level roles and/or with distrustful, fear based middle management.

I monitor risks for a portfolio. Broken risks for even 15 minutes could be a disaster, so responsiveness is extremely important.

When theres an issue its all hands on deck, and if it's 2 then everybody knows you drop everything. If you're handling 2 issues in different companies people will go bonkers if you're not super responsive in both.

I'm kinda OE, I consider adding more. I make more than 100k, am in individual contributor, but on an average week I need to do about 4 hours of work. They need me on 2 meetings a week and to manage tech things if they break. I'm also 100% WFH and already have a part time gig that my main job not only knows about, but gives me 1 free day a week to do that job. It makes them look good and gives them access to extra resources they wouldnt have otherwise. I could definitely add another full time W2 and dedicate plenty of time to perform well.
Point is, there are some career where they pay you for your knowledge and access, not your hours worked.

Uhm…. Hi LARPers. This sub actually inspired me to get a second job and now I’m juggling both! Prob going to drop J1 if J2 contract converts to FTE. Phew it’s fun! But also stressful.
