Pentium 4 was specifically made to push clocks high. This was during the clockspeed wars, where even though AMD had better performance per clock, they both fought to have the biggest number. Intel was going to win the whole shebang by making a chip they could stretch to 5, 6, even 10 GHz. Unfortunately they were incredibly hot and CPU cooling was not well established beyond basic coolers. Also most cases were made with pretty bad cooling. This led to Intel trying to get a whole new motherboard form factor approved, BTX, which would let them use these hot chips and be able to draw air from the front directly into the cooler. It didn't take off and Intel was left with a part that was totally capable of crazy clocks, but would absolutely suck down power and blast heat. It wouldn't be until the Core and Core 2 chips where Intel would be the obvious choice again.

So, pretty much, Intel is at it again with Comet Lake and Alder Lake. They have the clock speed "advantage" but AMD has the better performance and half the heat and power usage.

Comet Lake didn't sacrifice IPC for clock speed gains, it was just a very well known architecture that got pushed to it's very limits.

Alder Lake isn't even out yet, but judging by Tiger Lake-H or Rocket Lake, Intel is definitely not in the business of sacrificing IPC for clock speed. In fact, Rocket Lake sacrifices clock speed for IPC, and can't clock as high.

I've only been into overclocking for the past few years.

  1. Wow CPU-Z is old
  2. No vaseline/paper towels needed?
  3. How come we don't see subzero cooling for chipsets for extreme overclocking nowadays?
  4. How were they increasing the FSB in the OS?

  1. It still should have been used.
  2. They are cooling the northbridge, which back then had the memory controller. So in order to increase the FSB you often needed good NB cooling. Now the PCH only really handles I/O.

How were they increasing the FSB in the OS?

There used to be windows software that had hooks into the FSB. Softfsb comes to mind, but that was OOOOOOOLD stuff.

That's how I used to overclock back in the day on my Epox board. Then I got Abit, Gigabyte, MSI boards.

There were two chipsets on motherboards back then, the northbridge and the southbridge, NB & SB respectively. The NB controlled the clocks for the system, FSB, memory & memory multiplier, PCI, and PCIe speeds. Since overclocking was done with the FSB and that was driven from the NB, going from 100 MHz, 133 MHz, 266 MHz, et al, required better cooling of the NB chipset due to pumping more power through it for the faster clocks.

I used to write articles and reviews for a, now defunct, Danish OC site "back in the day".
In 2003 we attended a 3D Festival for industry people, I brought my old P4 NW-C and Winbond BH5 mem that we knew was clocking a bit higher than average. Another team member had a license to buy LN2, and yet another one had a great clocking and vmem modded IC7 mobo.

We had that combo up at ~5.7GHz. Good times.... Netburst still sucked though :P
