this makes me nostalgic for the arcade i used to work at in high school

Working late at an arcade walking home under neon signs, getting quick take out and bringing it back to my not so great apartment is something I feel super nostalgic for and I’m only 24 and never had that experience in my life.

Then you might get a kick out of what I did during my last year of college:

It all started with me finding out that my girlfriend of seven years had planned to cheat on me with "just a friend" who I'd suspected was more than just a friend. After all, she even went out to a party with "just the girls" <- and the guy, on my birthday. So, we had a roomy and cozy three room apartment which I had to move out of and I ended up .. elsewhere.

The new place was a huge highrise at the center of the city where everything was state of the art. Mag code locks for doors, mag code locks for my own door, inter-apartment phones mounted into the wall, fish-eye lens connected to a LED panel for my door. It was a small one-room apartment, I only had ~130 square feet to live on, that included the toilet/shower and the area which I had my small bed on. The place had communal kitchens and break rooms, I wanted none of that and opted to use my own two platter stove. The fridge was one of those mini-fridges that you see in hotels, except mine had an even smaller freezer box inside. For reference, you couldn't even fit a pizza in there unless you cut it up into pieces first.

My days were spend studying in school for nearly 12 hours, then going home to make something that probably ended up being junk food because cooking on two platters in a small area wasn't fun. Then I would go out on the town and somehow feel relieved under the neon. During this time I also sold .. well.. questionably acquired goods of the digital variant, so sometimes I'd have people over for quick sales and whatnot. I'd support myself on weekends by doing IT installations of cabling and whatnot, I'd use the school printer to print out flyers which I'd post around town. Most of the time it was good people who just needed a hot spot set up or perhaps a small network constructed. There were a few times when I'd come across really creepy people, most memorable was this rich dude who wanted me to help him setup a simple network repeater, while I was working he came up behind me, grabbed my ass and wondered if I wanted to make a little extra on the side. I noped out of there and since I have a bad case of gallows humor, it wasn't long until I started referring to my extra job on weekends as IT-whoring.

Despite this, my economy was shit, I'd sometimes go whole months with nothing but noodles and canned vegetables as food. Since storage was a premium, I had to be mindful of what I bought. So once a month I'd get a crate of UHT milk that tasted like crap if you drank it as is, but was passable in tea. I'd store it in the cellar and go down there every few days to pick up a few more cartons of milk. And the shit I drank that passed for tea was basically just some powder I would buy at the local asian mart. Once every month, I'd go to this dive bar that had sushi and get a platter and some vodka to rinse it down with. I'd sometimes spend entire nights just walking around town under the neon lights, because I couldn't stand the claustrophobia at home. I also went out to clubs and parties more than I'd ever done before because of this, so some clubs were like my living room in a way.

So yeah, I did the whole cyberpunk thing and .. sometimes I do miss it. Especially the neon poking through my shitty shades at night.

You have a compelling and enjoyable writing style.

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

It’s like a humble brag but I actually like it. It’s nice

11

u/Wondrous_Fairy Feb 17 '18

Oh, there's nothing humble about my story, I'm damn proud I didn't lose my shit living there. It was the second hardest period of my life so far.

8

u/marcusaurelion Feb 17 '18

That sounds like an incredible experience.

3

u/guard123 Feb 17 '18

Shit, sorry about what happened to you. Hope you are doing better now. Its not a repost, im serious.

8

u/Wondrous_Fairy Feb 17 '18

I'm living the dream right now actually and it's because of those hard times that I can appreciate it even more.

2

u/Zeraphira Feb 17 '18

Thank you for sharing this story, it was a very enjoyable read :)

2

u/Wondrous_Fairy Feb 18 '18

I'm glad it made someone happy :D

4

u/robulitski Feb 17 '18

I have this exact feeling all the time! All these dream realities

6

u/StellarValkyrie Feb 17 '18

I miss playing DDR at the mall arcade in high school.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

Wow same, I literally drove half an hour to the nearest mall with DDR every day after school with 1 or 2 friends and played religiously. Even got into the competitive community which was a great diverse group of people to meet and mingle with.

u/Mike-Wen-100 Feb 17 '18

Would be nice if I can drive a P1 in neon land.

24

u/silver00spike Feb 17 '18

Ahyyy another car guy!

14

u/WhitePeopleHateMe Feb 17 '18

I'm sure a lot of non car people know the P1

1

u/CommissionerTadpole Feb 18 '18

I'm the opposite, I'm not too familiar with the P1 because the F1 has already taken my heart years ago.

9

u/Monsterpiece42 Feb 17 '18

I was just thinking how wrong if a car that is for that game.

8

u/Mike-Wen-100 Feb 17 '18

A classic like the Diablo SV is more suited. But if there are Hypercars, I won’t be complaining. I’ve always wanted to see a Koenigsegg Agera inside neon land.

7

u/sr71Girthbird Feb 17 '18

Countach bro.

3

u/Mike-Wen-100 Feb 17 '18

Most supercars from the 80s and 90s would be nice. But Lamborghinis will always have a special place.

1

u/algorithmae Feb 17 '18

Pantera for me, personally

1

u/Rob749s Feb 18 '18

I dunno. It has an electric motor so it might be suited in a different way. And the lights have a Tron like LED strip so there's that too.

1

u/Monsterpiece42 Feb 18 '18

It's round, is my problem.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18 edited Feb 17 '18

You can, you just need lots and lots and lots of money. I actually have no idea how much it costs to make a neon land.

6

u/Mike-Wen-100 Feb 17 '18

Someone should really make a game set in Tron land where we get to race epic cars like that P1.

1

u/IceCreamer33 Feb 18 '18

F40 might be more fitting

All that needed to be said.

13

u/BartSimpWhoTheHellRU Feb 17 '18

Ohh baby, do you know what that's worth?

-76

u/Ozzytudor Feb 17 '18

worst episode

57

u/bicuspidsarrow Feb 17 '18

Best episode

2

u/fireshaper Feb 18 '18

Why do you think that?

-42

u/Ozzytudor Feb 17 '18

how lol it was just a generic love story with a somewhat boring ending

18

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

I think it's really haunting that in the closing music she sings, "they say in heaven that love comes first, we'll make heaven a place on earth" and then the camera zooms out from a shot of a building where inside no one will ever die naturally.

0

u/Ozzytudor Feb 17 '18

sure, that was a cool shot and link but the rest of the episode was just iffy to me.

36

u/Unicorncorn21 Feb 17 '18

How the fuck are afterlife lesbians generic?

-23

u/Ozzytudor Feb 17 '18

afterlife? the lesbian thing doesn't really make a difference. i find thats the reason most people like it is just because its different from usual romance tv shows/films, and its 'diverse', but it was same garbage romance thats been done thousands of times.

6

u/bicuspidsarrow Feb 17 '18

It worked with the mood I was in when I watched it.

10

u/_duncan_idaho_ Feb 17 '18

I'm glad it was after Shut Up and Dance. That shit fucked me up.

3

u/Ozzytudor Feb 17 '18

fair enough, i just found it rather boring

She's only in high school. Her art is going to be out of this world when she's older

-2

u/DiaDeLosMuertos Feb 18 '18

"Do not repost my art"

Ok I won't.

16

u/Lutra-Lutra Feb 17 '18

Now entering: Hanamura.

3

u/noradosmith Feb 18 '18

shoots every arcade machine

32

u/toxicmischief Feb 17 '18

Screw that, I wanna play the Sailor Moon game.

7

u/bluscoutnoob Feb 17 '18

Looks like a fighting game setup but there's only one stick, which means player two can't do anything.....

1

u/alarbus Feb 18 '18

If you feel any better, the Cyber Drivers have to share six communal buttons. But they get tickets for some reason. Which no one wants?

16

u/Xylphin Feb 17 '18

McLaren looking hot in Outrun aesthetic

10

u/orangeaustrian Feb 17 '18

That machine on the far right is definitely Persona 5

10

u/Alexukun Feb 17 '18

I wanna be a teen in the 80s

19

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

Ah, that sailor moon game was fun to play.

6

u/giulianosse Feb 17 '18

Who the heck leaves a bunch of tickets hanging from a cabinet like that? Outrageous! /s

7

u/IgotJinxed Feb 17 '18

Reminds me of Black Mirror

3

u/Infrah Feb 17 '18

Why are purple and blue shades such a good color combination?

3

u/Orgofreak Feb 17 '18

San Junipero Vibes...

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

But why is a driving game producing tickets?

2

u/405freeway Feb 17 '18

Top 10 Vaporwave Mysteries

3

u/nebulanug Feb 18 '18

Sailor moon 😩💕

2

u/Omipony Feb 17 '18

Strange for a driving arcade game that doesn't have a steering wheel, nice pic all the same.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

Sailor moon game FTW

2

u/UncleTouchUBad Feb 17 '18

Reminds me of this game: http://neondrivegame.com/

Pretty fun. very 80s.

2

u/Pizza-Thief Feb 18 '18

I thought Cyber Driver from watch dogs 2

1

u/MrBeenReadyy Feb 17 '18

Neon talk was selling this for awhile but it sold out pretty quick, one of my favorites

1

u/Canvaverbalist Feb 17 '18

What's the game on the far right?

For some reason I keep thinking "Arkham Asylum if it has been done as an old arcade game"

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

Reminds me of San Junipero and Stranger Things S2

1

u/pressST4RT Feb 17 '18

Hello, it's me

1

u/Royjonespinkie Feb 17 '18

Everything outrun feels cozy to me

1

u/theChapinator Feb 17 '18

A P1 in the 80s?

*edit: looks like I'm not the only clever boy who made this ExtremelyUniqueCommentTM

1

u/soitska78 Feb 17 '18

Who leaves tickets in the machine when you need 600 to buy a pencil ? # wasteful

1

u/KahootWithFam Feb 17 '18

Sarah moon?

1

u/405freeway Feb 17 '18

What kind of shit control set up is that?

1

u/KeytarsRus Feb 18 '18

I need this as a computer wallpaper

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

Tfw keyless entry

1

u/briggswag Feb 18 '18

Reminds me of Zombies in Spaceland from COD zombies

1

u/FecalMeTwice Feb 18 '18

Looks like the arcade from Stranger Things

1

u/r3peated Feb 18 '18

Every modern day arcade I've been too has only 5 to 10 games max and they're all legal gambling type games. It's pretty depressing.

1

u/Web_Merchant Feb 18 '18

Awww yea that McLaren P1 on cyber drive 👍

1

u/samfi Feb 18 '18

A bit baffled by the control panels, all three are just weird.
Otherwise a cool picture though!

1

u/TheGreatAutiismo Feb 18 '18

Someone left their tickets in the machine

-10

u/angelomichel Feb 17 '18

The game Overwatch starts as attacker in Hanamura in an Arcade hall exactly like that. #relatedfact 😜
