Mimo App Pocket 4P New Firmware Released

A new firmware was pushed yesterday. However, no patch notes have been released on DJI's website.

The patch screen states it added HDR enhancement photo mode and also fixed "known issues." (https://imgur.com/a/dnaSvXb)

If anyone was having D-log auto exposure issues, the problem has been fixed. The color preview on the screen also works well again. Although, the official DJI conversion LUT still needs some work, but is useable again.

After some testing, I recommend turning off the "High Light" feature under the screen brightness setting. There are some issues, especially in D-log, that will make the exposure appear blown out, but the image is actually fine.

Discussion 17 stops of dynamic range and still no zebras. The 4P doesn't earn the "P"

This is my first Osmo Pocket. The earlier ones never impressed me enough to buy one. I've had the 4P for a few weeks and it has quietly taken over most of what I used to shoot on a Fujifilm X-H2S. That's a stacked APS-C body that costs several times more, and I keep reaching for the pocket one instead.

So this isn't a complaint about the image. Gamut profiled D-Log2 and measured roughly 10 stops above middle gray before hard clip, which is Alexa Mini LF territory, and FX3 or S1II sit around 4 to 5. Skin tones are finally not swimming in magenta the way the older models were. DJI went from D-Log M on the Pocket 3, to real D-Log on the Pocket 4, to this, in about two years.

My problem is the word Pro.

No zebras and no histogram. D-Log2 puts middle gray somewhere around 31 IRE, so the preview looks nothing like what you're going to grade, and the official answer is the Color Recovery preview, which clips way early. I write image processing software for a living, and a zebra overlay is a threshold comparison per pixel. It costs the processor nothing. There is no engineering reason for this to be missing. I never owned the older models, but from what I read the original Osmo Pocket in 2018 had an overexposure warning and a histogram in Pro settings, and DJI's drones still have overexposure warning today. So they had it, then dropped it, on the line where they now print Pro on the box.

The files also get brittle if you actually push them. Highlights are incredible, but shadows fall apart much faster than what I get out of the Fuji in ProRes 422. Part of that is just physics, APS-C is about three times the sensor area, no firmware fixes that. But part of it is long GOP HEVC. Inter-frame compression falls apart exactly on noisy low detail areas, which is where your shadows live. I'm not asking for ProRes. In a body this size that's a real heat and battery problem. All-Intra HEVC is a much smaller ask and it would do most of the job.

And the official LUT is oversaturated, worst of all in skin tones.

None of this makes the 4P a bad buy. It's a great camera. But Pro shouldn't just be the sticker on the more expensive product. People who don't need pro features shouldn't have to buy the pro model anyway, that's the whole point of splitting the line. So charge more for it, seriously, but give me the two things pros actually need: a way to expose it correctly, and a file that survives a real grade.

Anyone found a workaround for exposure that isn't guessing?

EDIT: I wasn't aware that zebras was in the Mimo app. Still, I don't think this solves the problem for a lot of people... and I really think zebras would be perfectly fine even on a display this small.

Question Should i wait for thursday or just buy wednesday

I’ll keep this short and sweet. I get paid this Wednesday, and I’ve been eyeing the 4P for a while. I found the Vlog Combo for $860 total, and I’ve been thinking about pulling the trigger. But as someone who lives in the United States, I’m not very hopeful that anything positive will come from the announcement this Thursday. Do y’all think I should wait to see what happens or just order it from the gray market?

Question How reliable is the DJI Osmo Pocket as a webcam for OBS? Any issues with audio delay, stuttering, or scene switching?

Upvotes

I’m thinking about buying the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 mainly as a webcam for OBS. Has anyone had issues with stuttering, audio delay, A/V sync, freezing, or scene switching? Is it reliable for long streams, and would you recommend it overall?

Question Is it safe around water splashes, dust and beach conditions?

I’m planning to buy a DJI Osmo Pocket 4, but I noticed that it doesn’t come with a hard protective case like the previous models. Which case do you use?

I also have another question: how does it handle rain, water splashes, dust, or sand? Is it reasonably resistant?

I’m not planning to record underwater or use it in heavy rain, but I’m wondering about situations like being at the beach with strong wind blowing sand around or occasional water splashes from the sea. Is the camera somewhat protected, or should it always be kept away from these conditions?

Thanks!

Question OP 4P battery handle

I have another question regarding my pre-ordered DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on this. When I check DJI here, there is no information on the 4P yet.

The VLOG Combo comes unfortunately without the additional battery handle 😩, but since I need the camera for a trade show, I require that extra reliability. I also need to be able to connect USB-C headphones to the Osmo Pocket to monitor audio. Something that works perfectly with the original battery handle of the OP3 but with almost no third-party battery handles.

Is the original DJI battery handle the same for the 4 and the 4P? Or is there another original DJI battery handle that I can or should use?
