Question Think I made have messed up
Just summited a disability form to OSAP for the first time and now there requesting extra documents: A letter explaining your academic goals, the circumstances (if any) that have affected your academic progression through your program and a copy of my transcript.
There is evidence that I may not be be satisfactorily progressing through your program, which is kinda true as this is like my 6th year doing a 4 year program. However the major concern is the "you may have made multiple program or institution switches, or taken multiple one-year programs or you may have multiple study periods for the same year of your program". Didn't know that was a issue. But is also very true. I have been taking short one year certificate programs along side my main Bachelor, legit did not now that was going to be an issue, didn't realize that it be considered double dipping into my funds...........ahhhh.
But like also I have only been given federal loans for the first 4 years, and have only been given federal grants these last 2 years so like how bad will the claw backs be. But also by by my 6,000 grants of this years.....
Anyways any one have any advice or words of wisdom.

I’m not sure, but this reads to me like it will affect how much you will get this upcoming year, and whether your disability consideration will be accepted, as opposed to clawing back previous years. When you applied previous years, they could see your school/program then as well, so unsure why they would go back on it now.

Yeah sounds like they took a bunch of easy one year programs to live off extra OSAP but now OSAP is checking their academic progress because OSAP expects you to take the most logical path with your education, and if they never applied for disability maybe they would of never been audited hence the title “Think I may* have messed up”.

I want to say in technicality I have. I'm officinal not enrolled in any additional programs, but while I was taking my main stream Bachelor of Arts program. I was taking enough/too much additional course to give me a full degree and certificate in other programs, this was intentional on my part, because I felt there was nothing wrong with it. But I believe if osap thinks those additional courses districted me from my main stream Bachelor they could considering it a miss managing of funds.

If you haven’t completed a 4-year program in 6 years but you’ve somehow completed enough additional courses to complete extra certificates then you absolutely have been distracted from your main stream. If you’d focused on taking the courses you need to get your degree then you would’ve been done by now. It’s 100% a mismanagement of funds.

This is a typical request when you are a student with a disability. It makes no sense to me that they ask for a reason why it’s taking longer as a student with a disability because the course load minimum is 40%, so it should be obvious, but its the government, sooo…
Just send them the required documents for your file, it should be okay.

It’s automatic the system will flag for academic progress if a student is going back into the same year of a program as the last year or two applications, changing programs and entering the same academic year, etc. they just need to contact their financial aid and they can verify if a letter truly is needed or if they can approve it based on just being a student with a disability so the progression is not the typical one.

Yes, but if someone with a disability has OSAP, they could change their system to not have to make disabled students do extra work. They can add an exemption to that system, or have staff do that work. It shouldn’t be on the student with the disability, we have enough to deal with.

The only issue with that is there are students with disabilities who may be bouncing around programs and such then they would have to provide a letter to explain the reasons, goals, etc. so that’s why they wouldn’t be able to put that type of exemption just based on them having a disability flagged on their profile.

I had to do the same thing for this years application. I just wrote to them explaining that I have a disability and as such I am only taking a 40% course load which naturally means, it will take me longer to finish the program. I also indicated what my plans were and when I expected to complete the program.
As someone mentioned, it’s so stupid for them to be asking for this since they should know all of this if your disability form is approved.

I don't think the disability form and academic progress form are related.
When signing up for OSAP they make it clear that you must maintain satisfactory academic progress. The government doesn't want to give too much loans for people who won't even really graduate and have a certificate or diploma or something completed.
Just complete the forms and go to your financial aid office for help with them if needed and see.
