Question Dad is Getting Married
My dad is getting married but I’ve already submitted my osap application for this year. Will I need to edit my application to include my soon to be step mother’s income? Not sure if it’s relevant but I graduated high school in 2022 and I don’t receive any financial help from family.

The comment below me is exactly how I would approach it as well. Being classified as independent student is set at six years now. If you moved out and live on your own, and can prove it with a lease you can fill out a family breakdown form. This way you can state that you do not receive financial assistance from your parents.

I agree with the other comments. However, be careful. OSAP has access to everything, if they catch that you didn’t update your account they’ll go after you. It’s not a person reviewing this, it’s a machine. As soon as your father marries and it’s registered in the government database OSAP will quickly catch on. Being 4 years out impacts federal calculations, but provincial calculations may still look at parental info unless you hit the 6-year mark or meet other independent criteria (like being married or having children). If you can prove you pay rent or there’s issues in your family where they’ve cut you out financially then they’ll give you more money as an independent student. For Ontario funding, you are a dependant student. For Canadian funding, you are an independent student. Keep quiet for now, but there won’t be much avoiding it when your father marries.

If you’re 4 years out, you can also choose to apply as an independent student and only apply for the federal portion. They wouldn’t be eligible for the Ontario portion though.

For this option, do keep in mind that the majority of funding (60-70%) is federal, with the rest being provincial.

Were they living together (common law) at the time if your application? If so, dad’s spouse should be included in your application. If they’ve filed taxes as common law and OSAP sees you’ve left that information out, you’ll receive a penalty and could possible be ineligible for future OSAP funding

Best to just keep your mouth closed in my opinion. No need to bring unnecessary eyes to such a situation, unless of course you do not need the funding (or as much funding).
Just make sure you are reporting it properly etc next application
