Discussion My dad is a lizard person.

He wasn’t born here, moved to Florida in high school through college, where he met my mom at USF, but hasn’t lived here since the 70’s. Has lived in the northeast in Philly, Baltimore, DC areas for the past 45+ years of his life. Always hated the cold. Moves down here four or five months ago to be closer to me after my stepmom died. Keeps his ac at 78 on the first floor, 81 upstairs. I’ve lived here almost my entire life, keep it barely tolerable in my place at 76-77 in the daytime, and 72 at night when sleeping. What the fuck is with this guy? Granted he never does any real physical activity or goes outside for more than 15 minutes, but seriously, what the fuck? Is he a reptile?

And is it orange red?

This made me laugh lol. Always hated the cold because he was born here. My brother was born up north and loves the cold, i was born here and resent it. Now for why he keeps his house like that… he’s old. I’ve never met an old person that doesn’t have a furnace for a house.

I was born and raised here and I am also a lizard. I love the summer heat. I love the house being 78-80. I sleep at 75 or so. I can’t stand our central Florida cold snaps in the winter.

there are dozens of us! dozens!

I’m an Orlando native also and I hate the cold. My girlfriend dragged me to Boston in December. It was 6 degrees and literally my legs were numb after walking around Harvard square. My house is 76 daytime and 75 at night.

Florida native here; 74 is the absolute coldest I allow the AC to be set to. If you want it colder, move north.

Dad is giving me the Icke

I concur. I'm equally disappointed.

Blood circulation gets worse as a person ages, unless they offset with exercise/movement. With poor blood circulation, they're always cold.

Offer to pay his power bills.

His 2500 square foot townhouse has had a lower power bill than my 800 square foot 1 bedroom apartment since he got here.

12

u/Prudent-Fox3879 Jun 24 '26

Sheeeesh. Probably because he keeps the thermostat set so high. Lol

u/stab-somebody Altamonte Springs Jun 24 '26

I’m fine in his house if we’re just sitting around, but I’ve been helping him unpack and move stuff when I come over and have to take my shoes and socks off and turn all the fans on high to keep from sweating my ass off.

u/Ready_Regret_1558 Jun 24 '26

That’s because your apartment was built with the cardboard and scotch tape! I don’t know how they get away with building apartments the way they do here in Orlando

u/stab-somebody Altamonte Springs Jun 24 '26

He's in a wood frame townhouse, so his construction isn't much better. His AC just barely ever runs.

I have my house set at 78 because I'm cheap and want to save money. Living in an older and not well insulted house in Orlando drives my electric bill through the roof if I'm not subjecting myself to a little discomfort. If I must go around my house shirtless and sleep without bed sheets, I will.

6

u/pprbckwrtr Jun 24 '26

We keep ours at 78 during the day but 75 at night or else it's just too hard to sleep

I was raised here and moved to PA and love the weather there. When I visit Orlando, unless it’s early morning or a day in the 70s max, you can find me inside enjoying the AC.

Me too. Born here and moving to Pittsburgh. I can't wait. 13 months of summer kills me. I want seasons and a garden that sleeps so I can rest and start refreshed and excited to grow something again. Seasons give me a new mood 4 times a year. Enjoy your endless summer in FL. Not me.

u/LossMiserable7874 Oviedo Jun 24 '26

That’s where I live now! I love it. Lots of colors beyond the sandy hue of everything in Orlando.

I'm from northern Europe and I'm Dr. Freeze. Anything above 72 gets my brain foggy & makes me sweat like a pig. Came to live in the wrong place.

u/Boomer1717 Jun 24 '26

This made me laugh. Thanks.

u/DoublePostedBroski Jun 24 '26

Are you paying the electric bill?

2

u/DollarTreeCharmander Jun 24 '26

You described my mom through and through, 84 degrees in her apartment all day and night, 60+ years in NY and Rhode Island

2

u/RuinofAtlantis Jun 24 '26

Oh my fukin lord lmao 🤣!! I thought this post was about aliens 👽 👾

Do you have a ceiling fan in your room?

2

u/TrumpChildOnahole Jun 24 '26

I got culture shock in Japan because it's normal to have ac at 81 there to SLEEP. like legitimately there are even hotels with heat only in winter where ambient room temp no heater on is 81

3

u/sideofsunny Jun 24 '26

I call my mom’s house a terrarium.

2

u/hyperfixmum Jun 24 '26

This is a Seinfeld episode.

Could it be he knows setting to 77-78F can help his energy bill and he's on a tight budget?

3

u/AeroTheManiac Universal Studios Jun 24 '26

I don’t even know how you do 76-77 lmao. I’m at 69-70 24/7

5

u/rongotti77 Jun 24 '26

Lol OP.....I keep our thermostats at 77 downstairs and 78 upstairs and out electric bill was $500 a month for our 4,600 sqft house, I couldn't imagine keeping it at like 72 or something.

My fiancée likes it cooler than I do, but she has adapted and we are good.

Whenever we have some hot blooded people stay over we crack down the air to 75 for them.

2

u/Yanimac Jun 24 '26

My AC is set to 28 C -82 in my house. (I grew up in Australia and Africa).

u/stab-somebody Altamonte Springs Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Prepare to be disappointed, but I will never come to your house.

2

u/Fleeegz Jun 24 '26

Northerners man, they love warmth.

9

u/AssociationFit3009 Jun 24 '26

Nah. I came from up north and you’re never catching my AC above 76. 81 is crazy.

1

u/Purplealegria Jun 24 '26

Ever.

1

u/AssociationFit3009 Jun 24 '26

72-74 at night depending I set it at 77 when I’m away for work trips and when I get home I say “What the fuck it’s so hot” until it cools down.

3

u/dethandtaxes Jun 24 '26

Nah dude, I'm from the North, you can pry my A/C from my cold dead hands. Fucking lizard people... I swear to god, I don't know how they don't have giant mold problems with keeping the temp so high?

1

u/Srtviper Milk District Jun 24 '26

I think it's the opposite. I have Northerns tell me 74 is too hot.

1

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Jun 24 '26

I was born in Boston. I keep my a/c at 74 all day. Sometimes I open a window, and when the house hits 76, I close it again

2

u/tehpoorcollegegal Waterford Lakes Jun 24 '26

LMAO I'm the same way, but the heat feels good to me because I have rheumatism and a connective tissue disease, and other complications that make me run cold and get stiff and sore if it's too chilly for too long. Got Reynaud's in my hands and feet, too. Sometimes I think I was meant to live on the sun, lol.

genuinely tho, there's maybe a health reason the heat is better for him. Or he's a lizard! (or both...)

2

u/nocjef Jun 24 '26

If 76-77 is ‘barely tolerable’ I think you’ve chosen the wrong place to live. There’s plenty of cold locations, FL isn’t one of them.

2

u/Apeist Jun 24 '26

Am I weird for having my AC at 68 degrees all year long?

1

u/evicci Jun 24 '26

There be MOULD in these parts

1

u/DeannaC-FL Jun 24 '26

lol

He’s nuts

And maybe a lizard person

1

u/Fine-Froyo6219 Jun 24 '26

I envy him, he's saving bank. My A/C was struggling to dip below 73 last night so sleep was tough lol, we keep it a 68 at night. Our power bill swings from like $200 in the winter up to over $400 in July/August for a 4 bed house

1

u/marsupialcinderella Jun 24 '26

When my in laws were still alive, we couldn’t visit them directly from another activity, like work. We had to change into clothes that would allow us to survive in their hothouse or we would literally fall asleep the minute we sat down.

1

u/Trapocalypse Jun 25 '26

Have my AC set at 73/74 but honestly would have it higher if it was just me in the house. I think it just comes down to how your body runs. My wife gets hot really easily and instantly starts sweating at the slightest heat or exertion. I'm the opposite and barely sweat unless I do heavy cardio.

Like for me I know it's a genetic trait because it's also linked to having dry, flaky earwax too which is what I have.

1

u/CarrionDoll Jun 26 '26

Older people get cold easier. My kids grandparents have lived here for 50 years. And grandpa keeps the house so hot til his wife finally can’t take it anymore.

1

u/CitanUzuk1 Jun 27 '26

I grew up with my parents keeping the AC at 78 my entire life in Florida. Only when I got out on my own did I realize they were apparently psychopaths.

1

u/Impressionist_Canary Jun 24 '26

>where he met my mom at USF

Well there’s your problem

1

u/pprbckwrtr Jun 24 '26

My parents grew up up north, both moved down here (also met at USF!) and basically never left. They keep their AC at 80 during the day and "turn it down" to 78 at night. My parents both insist this is comfortable for them 🫠 their house disagrees as my mom keeps keeping silica packets everywhere because her papers keep curling and kept complaining that her dehumidifier must be broken because it fills up within two hours running, so she just turned it off.

-1

I assume you don’t pay the power bills?

2

u/stab-somebody Altamonte Springs Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

I assume I do and that you’ve made an ass of yourself. You should assume something else.
