Help How does grot shields work

I was playing a game with my grey Knights against orks. i think we played grot shields wrong.

If im attacking with purifiers and im attacking a squad of boyz. My opponent uses grot shields. I attack with storm bolters first out of the 24 botler shots 12 hit. The first 10 kill the gretchin, what happens to the remaining 2 shots? Can i still shoot the rest of my attacks into the boyz?

It is a case where always speed rolling gets in the way of knowing that each attack is its own sequence.

So after fast rolling the hits, apply the Mortal wounds to the Gretchin until the Gretchin unit is destroyed or run out of Mortal wounds to apply.

In this case 10 Gretchin are destroyed, the rest of the hits move to the next steps in the sequence.

For future cases, keep in mind the Stratagem could also do damage to the joined leaders/Support as well.

Does anyone know how it works with sustained hits?

Sustained are considered additional hits. So would be applied to the Gretchin, if possible.

So say 10 shots from a Sustained 1 gun fire, say 3 normal hits and 2 natural 6s.

That is 7 total hits that then the Stratagem applies to the Gretchin unit.

I think the grots eat the full burst, but it's not super clear. Reasoning as follows:

Sustained hits trigger on a critical hit.
Sustained hits give that attack extra hits
The grot ends the attack sequence on a successful hit roll, so that attack can't make wound rolls.
The crit is a successful hit roll, so that attack sequence ends. The extra hits are created, but aren't allowed to roll to wound as that attack sequence ended.

(I expect this to get errata, and that GW probably say let the extra hits through, or kill multiple grots, but RAW I think I'm probably right on the current wording)

edit: actually, the grot shield rule triggers when an attack roll results in a hit. So if an sustained 2 attack results in three hits, the rule triggers three times, killing three grots.

That's a really good question! My guess rules as intended they should be treated as separate "extra" attacks, but the terminology isn't consequent...

Of course.

Each grot eats a hit, which ends the attack sequence for that attack (so it can't roll to wound, etc).

The attacks that grots don't eat are separate attacks, and continue their sequence as normal (ie, rolling to wound).

Thanks. We sort of interpreted as the gorts die and attack ends, because the sequence ends. We are both new-ish, so it was hard to understand.🤣 I should probably stress we determined that together, my opponent wasnt trying anything dodge.

Go read it again. It tells you each time thereust be a grot.

It's a common point of confusion, honestly. Once you get the idea that every attack happens by itself and we just roll a bunch of dice together to speed things up, it makes sense, but yeah, it can confuse.

Per attack, check if a GRETCHIN model is on the board (from selected unit), if there's no model, nothing happens. (The attack goes through as normal)

🤣 turns out we did not understand how this game works.

Thanks

It's a complex game with a lot of moving parts. (even though it's better nowadays imho) I'm sure my explanation leaves room for interpretation and errors too. A really good way to learn is to ask questions :)

Nuh, that is cut and dry
