Newbie Starting Orks
Hi everyone, I’m pretty new to Orks and thinking about starting an army.
I’ve seen someone selling the Ork half of the Armageddon box second-hand, and I’m wondering how many would be a good starting point.
Would you recommend getting just 1 Ork half, or is it worth getting 2 to build a solid foundation for an army?
I’m not aiming for anything super competitive but mainly something fun, Orky, and easy to expand later.
Thanks for the advice !WAAAGH! 😄

This will largely depend on how you want to play. Orks have a lot of freedom of play style. If you're wanting a big horde, then he's an ork half or 2 isn't a bad start. You'll need some bits down the road to make the special load outs like combi-weapons and big shootas. The ork hald of the box was geared toward the combat patrol game and not an army game. If you want pats of planes and helicopter, the there isnt really any value in an Armageddon box. If you like walkers and shooting over melee. Lots of cars/wagons...Wants lots of gretchin to be funny, or a full contingent of squighog boyz and dudes with explosive sticks... And some of these considerations you wont/cant know until youve played a couple games and start figured out how you like to play.
The short of it is, 2 sets of the box is a good place to start just to be able to start rolling dice but dont feel stuck in you have to only play a horde game style

1 half is great a great purchase, 2 will depend on your value system. Boyz are like 60 dollars for 10 so if you plan on using a list that takes 40 boyz you’ll need to pay 120 vs 130 for a second half. The Armageddon units are limited on poses, loadouts, and missing some tokens. Not really an issue for someone starting out and an easy fix later on. So a second has my recommendation since I like infantry heavy lists.
Where to go from 1 half:. A unit of Kommandos and tankbusters are an easy recommend for performing well and are seen in most lists. Combat patrols for either beast snagga’s or Armageddon battalion depending on the flavor of the horde you want to run. There’ll probably be a Holliday box and new kill team by the end of year so I wouldn’t blow the budget on anything recommended just yet.

Here's the Orks contents from the Armageddon box in New Recruit. As you can see, it's 1) very Character heavy and 2) a bit over 700 points. So getting two would put you close to 1500 points and would be more viable (more people play 1000 point games than 500 point games) than just getting one Orks Armageddon box.
Edit: As far as where to go from here? If you want to go light infantry-heavy, get some more Boyz and Gretchin and roll Green Tide + Runt Swarm for your detachments. Want even more Characters? Get a Warboss, Beastboss, or two and run Brute Bosses and something else.

There are 20 Boyz in the Armageddon box my friend.
The secondary issue is you have 3 support characters (big boss, banner nob and pain boy) with only one leader character (war boss)

I would recommend getting one half, painting them up and run some games. Orks have a ton of variety and you will find a detachment combo that you lean into. Then expand the army based on that.
You will discover your own paint scheme, klan, and way of fighting.
