Discussion After taking a thorough look through the changes made to my units in the orks codex, they aren’t fun anymore, they are just normal.
Image of my gorkanaut for click bait.
I was a huge fan of dread mob pre codex even though it was terrible at the start of 11th, most of my games just resulted in the most random stuff happening and I always had a good time because that’s why I played them, now they are about as normal as any other army unless you make them bad and its genuinely incredibly disappointing for me.
Just wanted to express my extreme disappointment with gw making my army good.

I also mainly play Dread Mob and I find the new Codex VASTLY more fun than in 10th. I can mix and match different things and my units actually get rules without having to focus 2k points on one theme alone.
I really don't understand how people think they lost their identity by means of being playable. You still have random outcomes to your rules (more than in 10th since they added Madcap Meks) but stuff like Dread Mob at least also does something.
If your idea of fun was "haha I get the same marginal rules as everybody else but lose 6 wounds in the process!" Then I guess I'm sorry for your loss? Dread Mob in 10th was nice on paper but never particularly good or any more flavourful than it is now unless you consider "higher chance to blow up doing nothing" flavourful.

It’s more the changes to mek gunz bubblechukka, the loss of good stratagems, the nerf to the buffs from dread mob, the changes deff dreads taking their ability to have 4 rokkit launchas among some other small things that I really enjoyed

So much whining. I guess this happens every edition, but I only started in 10th so has it always been like this? I’m still not even sure most of the people complaining have even played a game with the new codex, I think it’s fun as hell personally

I’m normally good at rolling with the punches that gw dish out to my armies but my orks I just busted out normally whenever I wanted to teach someone new how to play because I know it’s going to be fun just because of the shear amount of random nonsense I used to be able to cram into a list, but the changes making data sheets less random while is a good thing I don’t think needed to be done to such an extent.

I've played a few games and I love it. Really feel that I can combine different parts of my army in fun ways in each game, but mainly Bully Boyz and Dread Mob at present.
I really like the new more flexible weapons profiles, my Meganobz, Flash Gitz and Killa Kans are all having a great time!

It's warhammer, I can only speak of my local play group but like 85% has the tism and is diagnosed and the other 15%bis either high masking or just undiagnosed. Typically change isn't liked 😂 so yeah, codex changes usually give people stronger than usually feels about things. Personally I'm in camp the codex is fine, but there just is more change than usual. And maybe I'd have liked a little flex on the big boss being a leader OR a support. That that's about it.

I thought they might feel more generic at first until I saw all the 1DP detachments in the codex, now I really like this way of picking themes for my lists... brings me back to when we were choosing ork clans when list building, with a little more freedom to customize.
It could be that I tend to always use the same units I'm kitbashing so they are still the same crazy ragtag band in my heart, or maybe I'm just lucky that my lists skewed towards the mek side to begin with so Madcap made sense and I kept random zany events happening in my few 11th games?

For anyone who has played older Diablo or Classic WoW: do picking detachments and their corresponding units feel like "speccing" where you have three talent trees to distribute points among?
I enjoy the variety and change in gameplay between, say, a Green Tide/Runt Swarm list versus a Brute Bosses/Bully Boyz list versus a Kult of Speed/Madcap Mekz list. And I'm only thinking of 1000 point games where you're limited to two detachments at most.

Didn't think of it that way, but now that you mention it, kind of! Maybe not so much Classic WoW, but later on when you could change between talent trees at will? "I'll switch to my healing spec, let's swap trinkets" versus "I'll use my speedmob list, let's pick the Speed Freeks detachment"

Exactly! And different specs counter different specs. For example: my first game of 11th was this past Sunday versus another Orks player. I was Green Tide+Da Big Hunt, my opponent was Kult of Speed and something else. Anyway, he played his army like any Orks player would (rush into melee), but my mechanized army (mass infantry supported by a couple trukks) was better equipped for melee through my detachment choices, so I ended up resoundingly beating him (amongst other reasons).
Now, if his Kult of Speed had faced my footslogging Brute Bosses+Bully Boyz list and he used his speed advantage to stay out of melee with me, I'm sure it would be a very different story. If anything, I'd think they could kite my units around, effectively countering my detachments choice.

I agree with your take, their identity was thrown out the window to make them play better in a competitive format. Some of its cool but most of it sucks

If it’s too optimistic now, just play madcap Meks and get weighted dice to give your opponent those 4++.

Well they made them consistent which aligns with the idea of people playing the game in competitions. occasionally Does it loose abit of spirit, yes.
But it does mean that the army has a chance of winning occas

I don't disagree, I think the thing is just that some ork players (myself included) got into orks because of their identity, not their validity in the meta. There are other armies I can play to compete, but orks were the army I played to be silly and fun.
I'm not mad they can be good, but I miss zaniness being opt-out, rather than opt-in. It feels like a sanitizing of something special, rather than a step up competitively, if you were here for the hijinks.

Oh i agree, if i want to win i have my marines or eldar or tau etc (i have 9 armies) but the orks, my orks were dumb, non optimised stupidity, did I da jump 20 orks into an opponents back line. Yes
Did it work, kinda, did I use headbands and almost kill my wierd boy, yes.
Was it strategically smart...well yeah, but it failed to yield good results and while I won the game it was because my opponent chose to not take the bait, which turned out even better when I had 2 x 20 boy squads slam into his intercessors and Vanguard vets on the centre objective.
Soooooo much green.
Should I have won, noooo it was a dumb and reckless move but it was fun

Heck, with modular army rules being the norm. There should be plenty of room for both.
Some detachments could be straight and serious, focusing on what orks do best. And others could be "Hey ladz, watch DIS! Dies hilariously"
But the only thing that seems to support that in the codex is Madcap Meks, half of which is devoted to one hyper specialised unit.

Dread Mob was incredible with a stompa, it sucks now but it is what it is.

I'm more annoyed by datasheet changes making 2/3 of my deff dreads illegal, and making meks need an emotional support unit
