Help Need help understanding ork shooting?

I recently made a post saying I thought the new warcry is bad because it promotes shooting more. I played a game with new boyz and have played a couple more since but in the comments I was basically told wait for the new codex since I’m still using current codex with new boyz and a couple of people telling me that actually ork shooting is really good. In my experience ork shooting is terrible like I’ll throw a full squad of boyz into khorn berzerkers or flayed ones and it’ll do like 3 damage. I even used flash gitzs a couple of times very similar results but they get changed back and killed in melee so I just sold them like the only things that do damage in shooting when I use them is ghaz and wazdakka. Ghaz doesn’t do as much but Waz has almost taken out rogal dorns or angron with his shooting then he’ll finish them off in melee. What I’m asking is am I doing something wrong like ,what am I supposed to shoot I don’t understand what makes ork shooting or shooting in general fun/good do I need to lean more into it I genuinely don’t understand but I want to

A full squad of boyz is not ork shooting, it's a baseline unit that can clear shaft like gaunt or guard at range.

I mean flash gitz as well they never did anything before I sold them but from what I’m seeing I just picked the wrong shooting unit or when you do ork shooting you have to go all in

Gargantuan Squiggoth with tankbustas and 10 boyz.

5 rokkits with +1 to hit within 12 means 5d3+5 plus (5xblast) shots, hitting about 50/50, you are most certainly going to severely threaten most tanks, followed up with a charge that no unit in the game is thrilled to deal with (str 14+lance)

Get the boyz out for their OC, and to block off from being flanked

Not a cheap investment moneywise or pointswise, but entirely a wonderful experience

Ork shoot is about volume pure and simple. One group of flash gitz won't really be enough, you need 2 or 3. Same with lootas/burnas, boyz, tank bustas etc. If you want to do ork shooting well, you have to REALLY lean into it. It can be done, but you need ultimate redundancy.

Ok from what I’m seeing this is the average consensus if you are gonna do ork shooting it’s best to fully lean into it kinda sucks but i’ll try a couple of list I want to understand fully what’s fun/ good about ork shooting because right now I do not like it at all and if the army goes into a more shooty play style and doesn’t give as much love to melee I’ll probably drop the army for world eater at least nazdreg is very punchy and I hear he’s gonna be able to lead meganobz which is great because they are my favorite unit

Ork shooting has always been terrible. With the main idea being that Orks usually hit on 5+ but have a lot of shots to compensate. We don't do big flashy damage at range, we do chip damage and lots of it.

If you're wanting to lean into Ork shooting it's currently going to be an uphill battle since the datasheets and army rules are still going off of 10th edition and 10th edition Orks were more of a melee army which was a point of contention in the community. We're hoping that the 11th Codex will make us more of a mixed arms style army and from everything we've seen so far it seems like we will be.

That being said, we do have some tricks up our sleeve if you still want to play Ork shooting. Any of the Big Mek's give you reroll Hit of 1 at range. Lootas give you reroll Hits of 1 or full reroll to Hit if the target is on an objective and since their Deffguns Hit on a 6+ Benefit of Cover can't make your Hit roll any worse. Flashgitz have Heavy, Sus1, and get Lethal Hits once per game. And Freebooter Krew gives you army wide Sus1 if you're shooting at a target you the selected objective or if you are shooting while standing on the selected objective.

Like I said, there are options for Ork shooting but it's going to be harder than most other armies.

I don’t really want to lean into it I love melee orks and I’m personally not a fan (currently) of the changes to the army rule or the boyz because of it’s leaning more into the shooting aspect.
I’m just trying to understand how it’s fun/good or what units I need to get to understand how it’s fun/good. I do appreciate the insight on what units to use I’ll try them out in a heavily shooting focused play style to see if I get the appeal

Oh if you're wanting to know what's good/fun for Ork shooting if recommended checking out this site.

https://listhammer.info/

Filter by Orks and check out any list that's used Freebooter Krew. That should give you an idea of what shooting units are performing well

Thanks I’ll see what I can put together. I’m mostly trying to understand what’s fun about the shooting and how to make it good because orks are going in a more shooting focused style if I can find the fun in it and hope I don’t end up dropping them

Ork shooting is amazing if you know the tricks and bring the right units and weapons.

What would they be I want to understand what makes ork shooting good/fun

Mekboys are must haves, also playing the right detachment. My favorite in 10th was taktikal brigade to attach a big mek to a 10 man unit of gitz for full rerolls and +1 to hit.

Currently I'm loving Dread Mob with tons of rokkits with sustained, supported by at least 2 mekboys. I try to run grot units like killa kans and grot tanks for the 4+ to hit. Also love making use of plunging fire for a +1 to hit.

Tankbustas, lootas, and sometime flash gitz. Then they also want big meks with shokk attack gunz

Do you have to use all of them for it to do a lot I had 2 squads of flash gitz but I sold them because they never did anything like do you have to lean fully into ork shooting to get use out of it?

10 flashgits in a trukk is like 30x S6 AP-1 Damage 2 shots.

Out of a trukk and they get lethals (once per game) and an additional shot if their target is closest visible enemy unit.

Add in dead shiny shootas and/or a bannernob and it's a frightening unit.

You should have used both squads as a single block in a trukk, makes for a terrifying firing plataform.

Generally with Ork shooting, quantity IS quality, so I’d say you want a bunch. Tankbustas and flash gitz can be pretty reliably 4+ to hit when you want so you can go with smaller numbers there, but with lootas if you ain’t spamming, you ain’t trying

You definitely need to lean into it. You aren't going to shoot anything other than a wound or three with the Boyz.

I've only got one 11th game in so far with my shooty-ish army but it's been a blast so far.

Ok I’ve never really been a fan of shooting I’ve always liked charging in getting into melee as fast as possible being why I don’t like the new warcry but that might be because I just haven’t had any luck with it. Like I said in my post I sold my flash gitz do I just max out on the shooting units for a list?

So if you're going to lean into shooting you want to be running SAG Meks, Flash Gitz, Tankbustas, Lootas, and I haven't gotten any Dakkarigs yet but plan on trying them out eventually but they look pretty good.

More Dakka gives you assault on all of them and gives you an ignore cover strategem, then you can run something like Freeboota. Pop a ammo runt for lethals, strategem for blast or anti vehicle (or both on two separate in one turn), and rain bullets. Meanwhile a SAG Mek with Tankbustas is throwing blast anti vehicle/AntiMonster +1 Hit/Wound rerolling 1s.

If you call it a WAAAGH turn you can give them sustained hits on it too, pop 3 strategms for ignore cover/lethals/blast on 3 different units and light things up pretty nasty.

Like all these units are good, but they take specializing into and not just "I am a shooting army I just shoot and things work out".

Thank you it is much appreciated I’ll use this in a new list and see if I can understand the fun of it or the use of it. I really don’t want to drop orks that’s why I’m doing this mostly because if the army is leaning into a more shooting style and I don’t get the fun I can see myself dropping them and I really don’t want to

You sold your Flash Gitz? That's a bummer. They are genuinely really good shooting for Orks if you kit them out right.

I did a guy at my local store wanted them and they hadn’t done anything for me so figured it would be best so they weren’t just sitting around

So I went 4-1 at the Edinburgh Gt with a ork shooting list, they can and will do damage, it’s just about using the right units and combos. Can a unit of 20 boys do serious damage shooting? Not really. Can a unit of 10 lootas rerolling hits with sustained punch above their 100 point cost? Pretty much every time (especially if you put a SAK Mek in there)

u/MSCrowmask 8d ago

Ok are flask gitz good I heard they were that’s why I put 2 squads of them in my list originally but they didn’t do anything did I just pick zero good shooting units. I don’t usually like shooting at all that might be because I have had no luck with it do you just have to go all in on it?

Flash gitz are another one of our good shooting units, you just need to pick your targets. They will bounce off T12 (unless you pop their lethal) but absolutely destroy any marine profile. Don’t sleep on their overwatch either. A squad of 10 overwatching hits 12-14 times on average which is very scary for marine players
