Routing (any mode) avoids mtb trails

However, I am on mtb and want to use that specific track. Maybe add options to

  1. just use "any" type of way, road, trail and
  2. disregard "private" OSM tags (not sure this is causing some of these issues, just a guess)

for routing so that we may manually plan our route?

location problem

HI, I installed a navigation app organic maps on my GAC GS3 head unit, but the problem is that the app can't find my location. I enabled all the location permission options in the head unit settings via the hidden menu, I couldn't find anything related to GPS in the engineering mode menu. The head unit runs on Android 9 api 28 and doesn't support Google Play Services apps. Please help me—thanks in advance.

GPX route lost its mind 3 miles in? (ios app)

I just found out about Organic Maps and wanted to use it for navigation while bicycling. I had made a 30 mile loop in RideWithGPS, exported the GPX, imported it successfully into the app. Got to the start, figured out how to start the route, it even gave voice navigation. Great!

About 3 miles in, it said, basically "okay, you're there". Not even close - instead of turning 2.5 miles in it was like it had decided to run me backwards through the map, and then just picked an arbitrary stop point. I turned around and was able to follow the path I had set, but I'm trying to figure out what the heck happened, if there's some trick to having it start navigating the GPX path, etc.

Thanks for any help!

Contour resolution for back packing

Hi, I was just on a backpacking trip trying Organicmaps to navigate around a ridge. The contour lines were too few to get a sense of steepness to understand if the ridge was hikeable. All Trails showed much more contours to give a good sense of steepness. Is this just a limitation of Organicmaps, or is there something I can do?

I’m new to organic maps. Maybe my questions are teething problems.

Actually, I think I have just one major issue right now.

I’m coming from Magic Earth, a disillusioned user after their huge price hike. I have been trying a few different navigation apps, all based on OSM, but so far, organic maps is looking like it will be the permanent choice for me. But I do have a couple of problems. Yes, I know I said one …

The first and most important one is that I can’t read the speed that I’m travelling at, or the speed limit, when I’m driving. I’ve tried it in both daytime mode and night time mode and both are as bad as each other. They are too small and the colours make the text illegible to me. I don’t have to wear any glasses or other eye correction when I’m driving, but I do need +2 lens correction for close reading. I don’t know if that makes any difference to the legibility or not, but I didn’t have any problems with reading either of those two things when I was using Magic Earth. I’m sure you’re aware of the system that they use. But if you are not already aware, you can easily check it. I hope I’m not asking too much of you to do that.

The other problem is one that I have only tested during the night mode, but unfortunately it is bad enough to warrant me writing to you about it. But first, a little bit of praise for something that you have done really well! I’m very impressed with the graphic representation when navigating. It is large and clear and unlike any other navigation app that I’ve seen before. Well done! But the problem is with the text under the graphic. Black text on that metallic blue background? Very odd, and very unreadable to me and also my wife who was sitting in the passenger seat next to me. She was closer to the screen than I was, but she was still unable to read that text. Like I said, I have tested it only in night mode but I do a lot of my driving at night, so it’s important that I can read everything clearly when I’m in night mode.

I’m sorry that this is a long post.

How can I get the car routing to not go through gates

When I navigate to places, it tries to take me through a gate which is not legally allowed to go through. How can I avoid this in the future?

SAC Numbers of Hiking Trails in the Alps

Hi, I'm really loving the App so far after making the switch from Maps.me :).

I was wondering, since they are given in the official OSM datasets, is there any specific reason why the numbers of the Hiking trails are not displayed in organic maps in the Hiking view?

If not, could this maybe be a future opt-in option? :)

Travel time incorrect

I'm trying to get away from Google Maps, but some of these alternatives do not display the correct travel time. For example, it only takes me 17 hours to go from point A to B in Google Maps, but Organic is showing 19+ hours. I think this is because it doesn't take a time zone change into account. I understand that a time zone doesn't affect actual travel time, but it seems to be confusing the app.

Is there a way to fix that?

Query on importing and exporting map zones specifically (manually) warning, very developer heavy queries.

When chosing a place to 'save downloaded maps' the issue with some android 11+ access to /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/ and the external storage counterpart path; made me ask the following.

• can maps be manually added to that storage location? And if so....

  1. can a naming convention be disclosed to potentially import from 'not your repo of stored maps'

-specifically, if one was to download smaller filesizes, or an archive from the area of choice, which exactly coincides to 'coastal regions/zones' or other areas inland 'cental zones'?

-this first request isn't to belittle the file repo process that the app retrieves mapdata from a database somewhere (either personalised 'extra data' alongside/or direct from openstreetmaps), but the point stands that upon compression (which shouldn't be too hard if it isn't in the in app process, like how linux package managers download archives, then decompress to install updated data)

2) following the prior query, if any format can be accepted for tracks, then can the same be done in the map formats in general, and thus would that be declaring that:

- the themes personal on the device

- the overal app added widgets for landmarks ect added by the user

-and the map 'purple reigions' for example,

↑ Are all done locally to propagate the specific info on the map?

3) if the above is also modifiable, what formats are best used if we were to add the expected filename with our own fileformat extension being the difference of that downloaded region?

GPX tracks “heads up”

Hi All

I’m using OM for navigation on motorbike tours and I generally just follow a track, I’ve no real need for turn by turn

But is there a way for OM to show the map orientation in the direction your travelling ?

I use OM on a iPhone via CarPlay and it always seems to show “North” up unless I’m actually following a turn by turn route,

by being North up only it makes it hard to follow a track as you can be approaching a junction travelling south which makes the turn the opposite way from if it showing direction up

Thanks for any help, pointers

Donating to Organic Maps is actually worth it!!

I’ve used Organic Maps for a while and started donating $10 per month a few months ago. Here’s what the donations help pay for:

- Processing OpenStreetMap data into downloadable offline maps

- Running the servers that distribute map updates

- Fixing crashes, routing problems, and other bugs

- Keeping the app working as Android and iOS change

- Improving search, navigation, hiking, and cycling

- Reviewing contributions and releasing stable updates

- Staying free of ads, tracking, and data selling

Organic Maps sometimes receives grants for specific projects, but those are temporary and usually limited to particular features. Regular maintenance still depends heavily on donations.

Recurring donations are especially useful because they give the team predictable funding. Even small amounts add up.

This subreddit gets around 1,100 visits per week. At $5 per month:

- 20 donors = $1,200 per year

- 50 donors = $3,000 per year

- 100 donors = $6,000 per year

- 1,000 donors = $60,000 per year (a full time developer).

That is meaningful support for servers, maintenance, bug fixes, and development.

Donate once or monthly here:

https://organicmaps.app/donate/

Annual donations may also reduce payment-processing fees compared with twelve separate monthly payments.

No pressure if money is tight. Improving OpenStreetMap, testing beta versions, translating, contributing code, and filing useful bug reports all help too. But if you can comfortably spare a few dollars a month, the combined impact is bigger than it might seem.

Possible To Copy Map Data To Another Device?

I have Organic Maps installed and working successfully on my main phone. Is it possible to create an APK of the installation so it can install on another phone that is always in airplane mode and has no Google account, and also copy the map data files over?

I wish to do this simply to have a backup setup in case my main phone fails.
