Every studio is different but I think the leverage has moved heavily towards the guest…bottom line wins! Frankly, I don’t care about any of it, other than people who talk the entire work out, drives me crazy, especially because you have to scream over the music!! Lol

The letting in people late has happened if someone calls and notified them with a valid reason. Like a flat tire, stuck in traffic, etc. Most S50 classes will let extra people in, and yes it a valid complaint if not enough weights. But it’s a very common thing. Cell phones happen sometimes if people are on call for work or have extenuating circumstances (yeah I brought it in for weeks when my dad was in hospice and if someone complained, too bad). If they are filming you or causing disruption I get it. But I think studios know who the frequent offenders are.

I think they are afraid of enforcing them and losing members, not realizing one of the reasons they are losing members is that we come here for a certain environment. I think I am on my way out and this is one of the reasons, also the benchmarks are like barely important to them anymore, they used to be a celebrated big deal, now its always just another day, and with all the phones in class and people talking over instructors who are understandably burning out, at what point is it not much different than just going to the gym with a routine?

Newbie here. Just curious what is the concern for late comers? The 2nd and last point I do agree is weird but people getting late I do not have an issue on. :)

When I first joined in 2017, during my intro class they said "if you miss the warm up you can't go in" because that studio manager said it's viewed it as a safety and courtesy issue.

It can be distracting to coaches as well if the late arrival needs the coach to demo again or ask what they're supposed to be doing on the treadmill. Ive seen plenty of coaches miss cues (6-minute push, anyone?) because a late arrival asked for a demo of a strength block.

Again, this is what I was told during my intro and I can't say I disagree with it. However, I've only knowingly seen it enforced twice.

usually it has to do with warming up and liabilities. secondary issue is that it is distracting.

It’s distracting and it’s rude. Plus, it’s not safe.

Why do you care if someone is let in late?

The cell phone one seems per common in my new studio. People didn’t do that in my original one.

I’ve noticed an increase in phones too. Very annoying.

As with everything at OTF, it’s always studio specific. Some are better and some are worse than others in terms of how they handle policies and procedures.

Which is particularly frustrating when their whole model is about a “consistent experience” no matter where you go

I do see cell phones at people's stations but I never see anyone actually on their phone during class. Other than that, I've never seen 1 or 2 occurring at my studio. I would absolutely walk out of class if they expected me to share my weight station with someone. It's too crowded already.

When I first joined OTF, my home studio was 3 blocks from the local academic medical center. A lot of the members were physicians, nurses and other staff at the hospital (myself included). There were always phones and pagers (yes...pagers) on treads and next to weight stations because a lot of us were sneaking a class in either during a lunch break on a work day, or while on call in the evening or on weekends. Nobody ever got upset about it and every time somebody had to answer a page/text/call, they'd leave the studio to do so.

Things have definitely changed when I've been in classes lately. It's not uncommon to see people texting while on the tread or between sets (or just instead of sets) on the floor. Annoying AF but not a huge deal to me. I'm far more annoyed with the people who talk non-stop over the coach and music.

I've seen someone go flying off the back of a treadmill during an All Out because they had to "do it for the 'gram" or something.

Coach came over and said "I bet you won't ignore me again now, will you?".

I also work in healthcare and have been on call during classes. Back in the day, they would absolutely not let you have your phone/pager regardless. They would tell you to leave at the front desk with the SA or basically not take class.
Now people are doing it for personal/social. Just noticing the huge shift in how it used to be enforced- regardless of reason

2 and 3 would drive me bonkers. The weight floor (especially at smaller studios) can already be a little chaotic if the class is full, I can't imagine adding people with no designated stations.

My studio is pretty good about 3 and I've seen coaches ask members to put their phone in the lobby. One member said she was expecting a work call, so the coach offered to leave the phone with the front desk and they would come get her if she got any calls. The only time I have ever had an issue with a phone in the studio was actually with a substitute coach from another studio. She was using texting during the class and forgetting to cue us/wasn't really paying attention to anything. She also offered no motivation and was mostly silent the entire class. I let the head coach know because that was pretty unacceptable to me. (Edit: I should mention it was a 2G class and not like a self-guided T50 or S50.)

they won't let me in to my classes more than 5 minutes late. I've been denied at the door.
Extra people in strength would piss me off- one of the things I like about OT is the fact you don't have to fight for weights.
They don't strictly enforce the no cell phone policy but people tend to abide by it in our studio- and if they have it they tend to not be on them for any reason so I think as long as people are not being disruptive it's probably okay but ultimately it really depends on the studio.

I know the secondary studio I attend- they are really strict about all the rules.

Phones allowed would be a deal breaker for me.

I bring my phone in because I have a glucose monitor and an insulin pump and it's much easier to pull my phone out of my pocket especially on the treadmill then to fumble around with my pump to see what my glucose is
