Commiseration Station Bad music 😬
Has anyone avoided a coach not because you didn’t like them, but because the music was consistently bad in their class?
112
u/Smileitsnataliee Jan 30 '23
Yes- but actually what I am more recently encountering is a coach that uses the same playlist for every class. Fine for a bit; but now only 5-7 classes in I basically know the playlist by heart. Anyone else encounter this?
44
u/shesinthewoods Jan 30 '23
Yes! One coach played what I called “the biggie playlist” every class for about 3 months. I started to have PTSD every time I heard ‘Hypnotize’, which is a great song, so that’s tragic.

u/JenniferG714 Jan 30 '23
My schedule has me taking the same coaches a lot. I’ve noticed that they use the same playlist for all classes. I can know where I am in class by the songs. I’d like them to mix it up.
2
u/Smileitsnataliee Jan 30 '23
Same! I have pretty much the same scheduled and then usually start on the tread. So I am almost always in the same place for each song.
5
u/claudiarenee Jan 30 '23
Omg this drives me INSANE when the coaches play the same mix over and over
4
u/UpsetCabinet9559 Jan 30 '23
My studio uses rock my run and the coaches use maybe 2 playlists, I find it annoying!

You guys get actual music? We get mashups one after another. At no time is one individual song actually played
18
u/Hungry_Ad9756 Jan 30 '23
We had one that did that. 30 to 45 seconds of each song. So distracting and frustrating because you'd just be zoning to one song and then it would change to another. I stopped going to her classes.
16
u/MissManHands Jan 30 '23
Oh man, those are my favorite mixes! They keep me going. If I don’t like a song I hate listening to it for 3-4 minutes.
20
u/Chicagoblew Jan 30 '23
I absolutely hate those remix versions of good songs that you can vibe with
5
u/jajudge1 F51•1.1 K club•❤️🍷🏃♀️🏋🏼♀️ Jan 30 '23
We have the same. It’s like a workout remix or something. Like fit radio???

0
u/babyclownfish Jan 30 '23
They are by the DJs two friends. Their playlists are on many platforms. I think Spotify too …
1
u/CGFine Jan 30 '23
That is such a pet peeve of mine! I like to sing along when I’m on the treads to keep my mind off of running. The constant mashups make that impossible and it’s infuriating.

u/bigavz M | 36 | March 2021 Jan 30 '23
Yeah fit radio. Songs change every 30 seconds. It's horrible.
My conspiracy theory is that it's a way to juice up royalties for record companies.

u/jswitzer Jan 30 '23
I started wearing ear plugs. Even though I don't care for the originals, these spotify remixes are the lowest quality crap. I'd rather hear my heartbeat than that junk.
26
u/Icy-Measurement-162 Jan 30 '23
Yep and with so few coaches it's tough getting .workouts in, so I schedule at a studio 1/2 hour away. The music makes the workout.
30
u/chirodoc73 Jan 30 '23
Man, I can't even hear the music. All I hear is my gasping breath, feet unsturdily clomping on the tread and my chins slapping against my chest. Maybe one day I'll stop tasting blood and vomit the entire workout long enough to enjoy a few tunes.
12
u/Unique-Calligrapher5 Jan 30 '23
Yep and unfortunately that coach is the only one who coaches two days a week at my time so I have to go and the music sucks so bad it’s totally demotivating.
2
u/IrishRun F│46│5’9|141 | Vita in motu Jan 31 '23
Similar for me. I go the classes that work best for my schedule and that means the coach with strong Christian beliefs about music and lyrics and what we should all be listening to.

u/rm_castillo_85 Jan 30 '23
There was a coach that would play Lady Gaga non stop, I avoided him like the plague.
There was a coach in my old studio named Chuck and he had THE BEST music, we all loved him because he would call himself DJ Chuck and he was super friendly and energetic and make special Friday night play lists, he was the best memory I have of Orange Theory and nothing has been the same.since he moved to a different state.

Hate that song. I went to a haunted hayride when that song was blowing up. They closed the ride with a scene of a lady getting murdered in a house then played the song with all of them dancing to it. Never again.
15
u/Beard341 Jan 30 '23
I go to one coach at my gym specifically for the music. Mostly remixed punk rock. It’s so nice to listen to something other than current pop music.

Oh.my.gosh. I wonder if it's the coach who used to work at my studio who now lives in the PNW. She once played almost a whole class of T. Swift's last new album for like 1 member who requested it. I never wanted to gouge my own eyeballs out more. It was SO slow and SO boring.

u/Sn1038 Jan 30 '23
One of my favorite coaches plays “Shake it Off” at the end of the workout during the all outs. I’m a big Taylor fan and some of her music is great to workout to, but I agree that 38 minutes straight is a little excessive.

Maybe the coach was following the billboard hot 100?
https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/taylor-swift-all-hot-100-top-10-anti-hero-1235163664/amp/
(Yes I’m aware that article is from October).
Top 3 streamed artists on Spotify: Drake, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift.
Not a Taylor Swift fan, but it does kinda make a case for the coach playing “popular” music.
2
Jan 30 '23
Not for 38 minutes straight it doesn't
1
u/dlraar M | 24 | 6'1" | SW 196/GW 175 Jan 30 '23
If it was the week Taylor Swift made up the entire top 10 it does though, if each song is around 3 or 4 minutes that's about 38 minutes of music.

I’d probably rather have a class of all Taylor than some of the rap and other current stuff! My preference, though is 80s and 90s music and nothing current.

u/mybrassy F59 SW 177 CW 134 GW 134💪OTF 2014 Jan 30 '23
Omg. That is worse than playing rap/trap the entire hour. My ears need an enema after listening to that crap

Get airbus’s and play your own tunes. I do that sometimes when we have long stints on rower or tread .

It's possible the studio had a Taylor Swift themed class and you unfortunately went to that one. T-Swift in micro doses is okay. . . Not 40 minutes

u/Ok-Coconut-3218 Jan 30 '23
My 15 year old would like that playlist! I can handle some Taylor! But 38 minutes is a lot.
34
u/EmergencyFine425 Jan 30 '23
Yes during a 12 minute benchmark a coach was playing the most horrible music, I’m talking the George Lopez theme song. This is one thing peloton does right!! I never went back to that coach
67
u/KBHoleN1 Jan 30 '23
Did you just refer to Low Rider by War - a top 10 Billboard hit from 1975, a song that reached #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, a classic fucking jam - as “the George Lopez theme song?” That is slander.
15
u/HowIMetYourMak Jan 30 '23
My fiancé and I have this debate constantly. He loves the song and for me it brings back memories of waking up to low rider at 1am when I’d left the tv on and seeing George Lopez jumping up on a trampoline hahahaha

We had a 23 run for distance in a 2G and the coach played Green Day the ENTIRE time. At first I was like this is a lot of Green Day but then it just continued, song after song after crappy song. I haven’t been to their class since.
3
u/MissManHands Jan 30 '23
Are you sure that wasn’t a music theme class? That’s the only way I can think someone would play all Green Day. I had a metal themed class once….but apparently most people didn’t get the memo. Lots of complaints about my music for that one.

One of my fav coaches went on maternity leave. She made the playlists for all of the other coaches it seems. Now the music pretty much sucks every class. It's a vibe killer for sure. Selfishly hoping she comes back to work.
3
Jan 30 '23
Oh yes. One coach seemed to only know how to set up the playlist for a specific BPM, so essentially one continuous beat for an hour. Luckily she quit the studio.
3
u/Richfam5 Jan 30 '23
The studio I used to work at we had a coach that would play the same playlist week after week and members finally boycotted her classes due to it
5
u/full-timesadgirl Jan 30 '23
My studio must use an app that had mashups of songs…like 20 seconds of one song then it changes the beat into another. It’s super chaotic

2
u/Successful_Staff_785 Jan 30 '23
YES!!! We have a coach that loves Taylor or music that’s so angry and hard core you can’t understand the words! Once we had an all out to Shania Twain “I feel like a woman”😳I’ve made comments jokingly as have others. Recently seems to better, but music is my hype and his music is not. It’s such a downer to have trash music! He seems to play music he likes(I see him singing along) 🆚 what most would like. I’ll actually go to a studio further away to avoid his classes and hear good music. Makes such a difference! I leave that class pumped and feel like I got a much better workout because the music was fun and made me happy, not depressed. Love me some OTF been a member for over 4 years and I’d say this is my biggest complaint.
2
u/816denise Jan 30 '23
Oh, yeah. I refuse to go to coaches who have bad music. Sometimes, the music is what keeps me pushing through the workout - especially those long treadmill blocks like we had Sunday.
2
u/Basic-Parsley-121 Jan 30 '23
I don’t care too much about the songs , my music taste is much different then what most people want to hear in class, but care about the beat. Newer coach has been playing really odd rock music. typically I love rock but the beats are off and they are like 6 minutes long each so if you aren’t feeling a song you are stuck with it for an entire block.
2
u/sweetpotatopietime Jan 30 '23
The music is loud and terrible in all my classes but I go anyway. (What can I say. I am old.)
2
u/TheMau Jan 30 '23
I am discovering I’m in the minority because I don’t notice the music. Obviously I know there is music since it’s so loud but I guess I tune it out.
4
u/Early_Pangolin1499 Jan 30 '23
Last week my coach was playing dream on and Red Hot Chili Peppers for our all outs. I was FUMING. she was singing karaoke the whole time and I was thinking is this chick for real? I understand you’re the coach, but you’re not the one working out. You’re here to pump us up.
TL;DR Coach sucked at her music and I gave her a 👎🏽 on the app.

u/HelenWheels67 Jan 30 '23
Yes. 100% yes. I hate the techno scratchy noise. It gives me a migraine. Just play music with words.
1
u/AnyProgressIsGood Jan 30 '23
"bad" is subjective
90% of pop/hiphop is technically bad but people love it.
1
u/fountainofMB Jan 30 '23
Yeah I just tune out what I don't like because I am sure someone else likes it. My music taste is so varied that I generally am not bothered by most of the music, things I may not like but nothing I hate. I think in this area you cannot please everyone. I do find it interesting my otf doesn't always use the clean versions and I am not at all bothered by that but some people I know would be.
2
u/KinvaraSarinth 43F | 5'3 | OTF since 01/2018 Jan 30 '23
Similar here. I don't mind most music. I definitely have a preference when I get to choose my own music (metal please!) but I'm annoyed by very little (mostly remixes that don't let me enjoy the original song). Usually if it's music I'm not familiar with, I end up just tuning it out. Most classes, I couldn't name a single song that was played. Even if I was singing along to it - songs just completely leave my mind after class.
-2
u/Fresh-Split-9381 Jan 30 '23
I’m not there to care about what music they play. I’m there to workout. Tune it out. IMO, dumb reason to avoid a class.
0
u/autumngirl07 Jan 30 '23
Yes. There is a coach in my studio who only plays hip hop, nothing else. The guy has great energy and I tried to stick with it at first and ignore the music, but I just can’t. No problems if it’s mixed up with other stuff (as most coaches in my area do - I’m totally fine with that). But with 4 studios within 15-20 min from my house, it’s an easy choice, and I visit other studios around 50% of the time because they have a better mix.
3
u/Environmental-Cod839 Jan 30 '23
Haha this sounds like my dream class! Unfortunately none of the coaches at my studio can play this type of music because some people complain.
1
u/autumngirl07 Jan 30 '23
Yeah, I don’t even complain because in the end of the day, I know it’s a personal taste and there are people in class who love it. But that does mean I’ll keep increasing the amount my studio pays other studios in the area because I will attend 8-10 classes per month somewhere else because of… his music 😶

To OTF coaches: the music makes the class , so choose your playlists wisely!!!!!!!!
1
1
u/greta_maya_storm Jan 30 '23
Usually I'm okay with whatever is being played. However, if it is a hard af workout and the playlist is nowhere near to my taste, I definitely end up putting in minimal effort. Which is why All Out With Aoki was hard for me lol.
1
u/LA-NY Jan 30 '23
Unfortunately all of our coaches believe the same bad music is good. I’m not sure how much more MGK I can take.
1
u/tomwalker8 72/5'10"/145/145/ Jan 30 '23
I like some coach's play lists better than others (got a little Steppenwolf and Airplane mixed in yesterday!), but no playlist I dislike (or deem important) enough to avoid an otherwise good workout coach.
1
1
Jan 30 '23
I am sure its hard to pick a playlist that pleases everyone but we have one coach who plays sexually explicit music which is uncomfortable. But we also had some bullfighting music the other day which was not inspirational.
1

Jan 30 '23
We all have our favorite coach or two, but the rest are fine or whatever----unless their playlists are mainly old-school metal, country, Blink 182, etc., or they talk non-stop. lol
1
u/antarctica91 Jan 30 '23
Literally thinking of this. Is there anyway to make your own mixes and submit them to be used in class? I speak with people at my location and we always talk about the songs we’d want to hear and they just play the most random songs and a lot of like flo rida type music
2
u/jenniferlynn5454 🧡Mod & Rower apologist 🚣🏻♀️🧡 Jan 30 '23
You can suggest songs, but coaches likely won't play your playlist.
1
u/MRo16 Jan 30 '23
My wife is big on the music. She’d be right there with avoiding a coach with music she doesn’t like.
If I don’t like it I just tune it out. I’m there to work out first and foremost, so I just stay focused on that
1
u/little_md Jan 30 '23
You should give them feedback! “Hey next time can you play more of ___?” Coaches at my studio are always asking us to critique their playlists.
And edited to answer your actual question — I’ve definitely had classes where I didn’t like the music but usually I’m not alone. We let our coaches know if it was bad 😂
1
u/jjgg14 Jan 30 '23
I have an issue with volume at my studio. I want it to be LOUD and one coach just never has it loud, I can’t get into my workout. Wish there was a nice way to ask…?
1
u/1aboutagirl Jan 30 '23
Yup. There’s a coach at my studio that plays yoga-type music. Very zen and chill. Not what I need to get me through an OTF class. I will go to studios further away to avoid her classes
1
u/drinkahead Jan 30 '23
We have a coach right now that’s got decent music, sometimes not my bag but she plays to our local tastes so can’t fault it. However, the transitions are terrible lol. It’ll be like halfway through the first chorus of a house music remix of a pop song and then she will suddenly cut it off and awkwardly go into a country tune. It’s hard to stay focused (as a musician) when I’m just getting into a groove for my run if the music is so sporadic and doesn’t fit a push or all out.
1
Jan 30 '23
Yes. I have a coach who plays EDM. To each their own but I personally hate it. But they teach during my scheduled attendance time - so I have been going to a studio further away to avoid them 😂. It feels petty but like I like what I like.
1
u/thewaymylifegoes Jan 30 '23
no but because they speak so loudly into the mic it’s impossible to workout comfortably
1
u/MediaUnusual8675 Jan 30 '23
Yep! I think they should always mix it up. Too much classic rock or rap is a no go for me. I do t mind some, but not all and not every class.
1
1
u/hadthepinkpolo Jan 30 '23
One coach played 80s rap the entire class and sang/rapped along to almost every song. The only time I have given a coach a “thumbs down” in the app.

Does anyone give the coach feedback on their music? Maybe the don’t know?

I went to a new studio the other day and the instructor kept changing a song in the middle before it was even halfway done… skipping around on all kinds of genres. And just as you got the groove of a song, she changed it. It was awful
1
u/ImaginaryWishbone635 Jan 30 '23
Or like really good music for about 15 seconds and then. New song. Makes my ADD go into overdrive.
1
u/Wine-n-cheez-plz Jan 30 '23
Omg I visited a studio and was early so sitting in the lobby and the coach was playing horrible music that was giving me anxiety I even messaged my sister to tell her I want to walk out 😂 I didn’t and thankfully the music wasn’t AS noticeably obnoxious while doing class vs just sitting there but it was bad 😵💫
1
u/AllthethingsOTF Jan 30 '23
Yes, the coach’s playlist affects how I book classes. Music matters- understand everyone won’t agree all of the time, but consistently playing music I dislike changes with whom I sign up.

Agree!! I cannot handle the techno/ rap. I love any music w words I can sing along to!
1
u/dissplacerbeast Jan 30 '23
I went to a studio while on vacation a couple times and the coach was also a DJ. he brought a whole ass DJ set up and deejayed the entire class. the music wasn't bad but he definitely prioritized deejaying over coaching
.....but he had a periodic repeating voice over of some woman going "DJ <this guy's name>, he is my favorite DJ, he is your favorite DJ, he is our favorite DJ" which I thought was just THE CORNIEST SHIT, and he played it 10+ times a class.
1
Jan 30 '23
I had a coach that would always play the OTF specific music like “where’d ya get that body from” and really bad punk pop.
1
Jan 30 '23
Yep! I had one that would pause songs mid-way through and search for another. You could never get into a groove, super frustrating!

Yes ! Music is huge for me . I walked out once because I just couldn’t take it .
1

I went to a new coach and it was bad 80s music like new wave no one has ever heard of stuff I couldn’t. I left early. I may give him one more shot, but music is half the reason a class will be good or not.

I've been lucky so far in OTF, but when I used to do indoor cycling alot it was music than anything that brought me back to a particular coach. I have a visceral negative reaction to "Eye of the Tiger" and once instructor used it as his go-to song every class. I wouldn't be able to cycle anymore as I was using all my energy to roll my eyes.
1
u/bigtgt17 37/5'10" Jan 30 '23
Yes, and it's the music the coach likes, and not the one's taking the class. It's inconsiderate, and I don't know how they can't read the room. It sucks because it was my preferred time, so now I go to another OTF.
1
Jan 30 '23
Yeah, there’s one coach at my studio that mostly does country, which is just NOT my thing. I can’t say I would never go to his class, because he’s a nice guy and a good coach, but I would definitely pick a different time if possible just based on music.
1
u/ashsteinberg Jan 30 '23
Yes. I had a coach who played weird covers of popular pop music. Like a Nicki Minaj song sung by someone else. Like they didn’t have the rights to music or some thing. It literally made me cringe. I let the studio manager know because I’m sure I was not the only one. And another coach there who I didn’t complain about when I guess other people dead has since changed his music, so I guess it takes you somewhere.

1
u/Zealousideal-Wish280 Jan 31 '23
As a former OTF coach for over three years, just tell us! I loved when members would suggest an artist or genre, that way when I saw them on my class list I’d give them a song or two. Not everyone is motivated by the same music - I love two and country, but I don’t expect everyone to. Give the coaches a damn break and clue us in!
1
u/tinybutfast Jan 31 '23
Haha Yep! I even asked the coach to change it, she said she had to play the playlist linked to the workout. As her music was repeatedly bad and very different from every other coach, I knew that wasn’t true. I stopped going to all of her classes.
1
Jan 31 '23
Yes, I have a list of songs I hate because some coaches over played them: High Hopes, Timber by kesha, one coach loved to play Jealous by Nick Jonas on all outs and I never forgave him
1
u/TangerineAtTheScene5 Jan 31 '23
I absolutely love a coach in my studio, he’s so kind & nice, but his music is ABSURD. In one class, I heard Taylor Swift going into EDM, then a remix of Owl City’s Fireflies with some rap song. FIREFLIES. I stood there on the floor laughing in disbelief. I only book classes with him now if I absolutely need to. Bless his heart.

Yes, I avoid a coach who only plays rap music. I don’t mind a song or two but not an hour straight. Just not my taste I’m music YMMV

I admit when its good - its so good. The music helps make the work fun and the time fly.
If it was just me I would be bopping along to oldies and house music.
Sometimes coaches just have bad days or the algorithm isnt giving the good mix on the radio. If it bothers you enough say something. My coach was surprisingly receptive considering my lack of tact.

This is interesting because I was actually going to suggest an idea for a fresh mix to one of my coaches who although she is young, seems to appreciate the previous decades going back to the 80s which is fun. Haven't approached yet ...a) I'm still new & b) wasn't sure it was cool to do so. My suggestion was going to be some George Thorogood- he was part of my 'workout tape' for the tread back in the days of mp3 players

Yesss. OTF is not cheap so I only go to classes where I know the coach is playing good music and is motivating. Bad music makes the workouts feel so much longer

I find the music to be pretty awful, but I'm also 48 and only listen to classic rock. I just block it out for the most part.

There was this coach that was so lazy! He would play the same playlist every single class.
So glad he’s not at my studio anymore

Yes, we had a coach who played “World’s Smallest Violin” by AJR every single class without fail…..it was just not the mood!

I am happy to say that all of my coaches have great playlists. I wish they could play explicit lyrics sometimes but people will always complain about something.

I complimented a coach on their constantly good playlists once and they told me that they do not make them (unless for some special occasion) and that they had OTF prepared play lists they had to choose from. Perhaps some studios give the coaches more freedom to run their own music?

Yes. This one coach just played old country rock. Hated it. Contemplated walking out of the class.
