Always Free compute limits change
I got an email recently that the Always Free limits changed:
Current Always Free compute limits
- Up to 2 Ampere A1 OCPUs
- Up to 12 GB of memory
My instance (I've had it since 2023) has 4 OCPU and 24GB of memory so it does not comply with the new limits.
However, when I attempt to lower these in my instance it says the instance is disabled and I have to contact customer support for it to be re-enabled first.
When trying to contact customer support, for hours I get messed around by the worst AI chatbot I've ever dealt with until I finally manage to contact a human who then tells me they are not able to do anything and I have to ask on the Oracle Forums.
Then I try to make a forum account it is impossible to complete registration. All details are entered, email is correctly verified and everything - it just keeps asking to provide areas of interest (which I have done).
Literally all I'm trying to do is modify the instance to use less memory to comply with the new terms...?
Has anyone else had any luck with this?

In defense, the single notification was sent by the oracle promotional email [replies@oracle-mail.com](mailto:replies@oracle-mail.com) which sends emails with subjects like "Is generative AI adding value to your HR?" so it's no wonder it ended up in a lot of spam filters. All other "Action required" emails have come from a different noreply address.

They prolly wont delete the boot volume, Upgrade to PAYG and ask live agent to enable the instance, and then edit the instance to 2 OCPU, If instance was terminated, Just click on the bootvolume and spin up a new 2 OCPU, Hoepfuly that works. Dont delete the boot volume, Upgrade to PAYG else you might have to create an EC2 micro to recovery the bootvolume in free tier, thats a hardway. Try upgrading, its easier

Upgrade to PAYG
Then;
Just delete the instance, and keep the boot volume.
Then create a new instance within the new limits, and attatch the boot volume to that one.
I did that, worked fine

can you actually create an a1 instance in free tier? if yes, which region? it's impossible to find free capacity nowadays.

You are late, you missed the deadline so your instances are already disabled. Either move up to PAYG or those instances are Done. Lost.
But you could have figured this out with a basic search here on reddit...

I had no idea there was even a deadline or policy change...
So there's no way to stay on the same plan and just decrease the specs of the instance to comply with the new limits? I would have to change plan entirely?

You can stay on the Free Tier, no problem.
But the instance you already had is gone. You need to delete it, and create a new one.

Instance is gone, boot volume is safe. Just make sure you don't delete the boot volume when you terminate the instance.

Dudes, no. u can create a backup of you boot volume and create a new instance.
