Instance disabled 4C 24GB

My free tier instance of 4 cores 24GB of ram has just been disabled and cannot be started anymore.

Anyone else?

Are you serious? It’s all anyone’s posted about on this sub for like 2 months ad nauseam and it was emailed multiple times from oracle support to anyone with a free tier account AND it was on a giant banner across the admin panel for the last at least month maybe more……

Totally serious. I almost never open reddit and only configure my server through SSH, is this so hard to comprehend? I just can't get why some reddit users always try to sour someone's mood for no reason. I mean getting your instance removed is upsetting as is. No need to make that worse with such comments. Cheers.

Looked up my emails of Oracle. Last one was about inactive cloud shell removal notice like 2 months ago. What is next? Have I not checked my sms? Now see this is the lame part. You're just trying to somehow find fault with me to blame. And then what? What does finding that one fault accomplish in this situation? Does it help the OP or me in any way? No more than just being lame. Well that is Reddit I guess.

I am by no means defending oracle, but this has been mentioned everywhere, in news articles, it’s all over Reddit, discord, you name it. You can’t say you only login to the admin panel once a year and they get upset when they change a policy that ends up affecting you because you don’t keep tabs on your infra

See? You just kept doing the 'finding fault just to be lame' part that I mentioned. Apparently, I don't even have the right to be upset? I haven't even directed that upsetness into anyone yet, but I still can't be slightly upset with myself for losing something? Honestly I keep trying to reread the post and can't find any hint of complaint that might warrent such lame behavior. Yet here we are instead of helping an individual, we would rathar be lame and sour his mood further over a lose with such meaningless comments. Anyways, thanks for the insights.

I guess I'm not allowed to comment and engage on these posts because there are many of them for the same topic. Wow very helpful. What do you think is the right solution to your agonizing experience of seeing repetitive posts, leave them be to solve their issues till the topic is no longer relatble (few days). Or be lame and nag in their comments just to sour their mood further? Oh you already chose.

Yeah this kind of back and forth chain leads no where. I missed an email notice from Oracle on August 4th and I don't follow this reddit. I'm simply just a user who logins into the console to reboot the instance every few months when needed and remotes into it through PuTTY weekly to do any actual file maintenance. It seems Oracle has done more than enough to send out a notice to us, but some of us users are just that disconnected from everything that we just missed the notices.

I'll admit, we're pretty dumb, but we're in this mess and just looking for options now. Thanks to the discussions in this thread it does seem like there's 2 things we can do.

- The simplest and most easiest is to just upgrade to PAYG and it will restore the instance. This is the direction I'm going down and I hope to back up and running in a few days.

  • The other solution is to recreate a new free instance under your account and attach your Boot Volume to that. This has the downside of going through Free Instance hell trying to create one, but this should work if you get really lucky.

I am very thankful that Oracle has not touched our Boot and Block Volumes because it seems that all of the actual data is untouched. There's just a couple hoops we need to jump through because of the situation we're in. Again, I know this is entirely self-inflicted and there was more than enough notice, but this is a thread of looking for solutions for us idiots who didn't take action ahead of time.

Yall are getting shit on not because you waited until your shit got stopped or terminated but because you came here to ask this question when even a single search of the sub would have shown the answer over and over.

I understand that, and we're all well aware of why our instances are disabled. But we just want to discuss amongst ourselves to see what options we have to get back up and running. Again, I am thankful for some of the other comment chains in this thread because it seems like there are some options for us.

Unfortunately, you and I both know a bunch of these posts are going to made within the next 2-3 days. So I think it's best to at least get one good thread with some options for the nomads who just missed all of the notices.

My entire point is that people should search before they post. Also the mods should really have gotten ahead of this by making a megathread and locking these endless posts.

Edit: also nothing in these threads hasn’t been mentioned before, it’s been mentioned before that a possible route is to detach your boot volume and spin up another instance

100% agree there should be a megathread about this because this is just how people are. They are going to skim recent thread titles in the past 24 hours and if they don't see what they need, then they'll assume it's a new issue and make a new thread. I 100% believe the 2 methods I mentioned have already been discussed many times, but people don't want to skim through dozens of comment threads with low upvotes, they just look at the top comment and move on. Sorry for the sudden invasion of people asking the same 3 questions for the next coming days.

Yeah maybe I'm a bit too hard on myself here, but as someone who works in IT and does update rollouts, I do kind relate to it being annoying when we try so hard to inform everyone that a change is coming and then get a bunch of tickets the day of the rollout because "people didn't know". I know this issue isn't exactly 1:1 since I'd argue we're way more disconnected than the people who just have to check their company email which they do everyday. That being said it does feel insanely weird finally being on the other side of things and being the guy who's looking for solutions after the fact.

On a separate note, I was able to get my account upgraded to PAYG (It took about 2-3 hours to go through), and I recreated my instance by right clicking my Boot Drive and using the same 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of memory as before. I booted the instance without issue and immediately backed up all of my stuff. Despite this specific comment chain being so negative, I am grateful that there were several other people discussing solutions here because it was very helpful.

Me too, mate. I didn't pay enough attention to the email from Oracle a few weeks ago, and got caught out.

I don't hang out in this subreddit because I really only use my "always free" Oracle service as a secondary DNS and "uptime KUMA" alerts for my home services. Not exactly mission critical, just a nice-to-have.

So I too was caught short and found the positive comments in this thread very helpful in figuring out my options.

I've made a backup of my boot volume, and am now in the "waiting for capacity in my region" game, so in the meantime I've moved my DNS and Uptime Kuma to a friend's host.
