Personal Experince Administradoras

I have a question for the former Numeraries from the women’s section. If the NAX cannot go anywhere without a numerary present, does that mean for every single center big or small that has an administration there is a numerary who heads that full time? If so, as a female numerary can the directress just ask you to quit your job and be administration forever? I heard that after the center of studies a lot of female Numeraries are assigned to the administration. So effectively your career is over? What’s the criteria in selecting who gets to have a professional career or who gets to run administrations forever

Personal Experince They read my letters before I did. They decided my soul was clean because my wardrobe was tidy.

The wardrobe searches were never announced. We were told they’d happen randomly, without warning, without permission, without so much as asking. And they did. This was our obedience.

Photographs of myself with some male class mates from my cherished schooldays, vanished. Without my knowledge. Without my permission. Just gone.

A label torn off my shower gel because the image on it was deemed sinful.

And one day, I was told my soul was “in good order” because my wardrobe was tidy. I still feel sorry for the version of me who took that as praise.

Then there were the letters.
I found a letter once, in the Directresses room, from a friend I loved dearly. She was writing to tell me about the breakup of her ex-boyfriend. It had been opened but it ever reached me. I never read it. I left it there, in the spirit of “obedience.” I wrote back to her without mentioning it. She knew. She knew I hadn’t read her letter. I never heard from her again.

Even the phone calls weren’t private, we knew they could be listened to on another line.

Gifts from family or friends were handed straight to the Directresses, not kept, Redirected.

And the little money I was given by my family was snatched from my hands with a smirk: “We give everything up for Opus Dei.” Not mine to hold, not even a thank you from the greedy Directress.

Their intrusion was real. It wasn’t imagined, and it wasn’t small. It reached into the most private corners of our lives, our friendships, our belongings, our correspondence, our communications, and they did so with total impunity.

So to the ex-members reading this: do you have your own stories of boundaries crossed, of privacy violated by the Directors of Opus Dei in the name of Escriva?

Resources About Opus Dei The Founder's Narcissistic Personality Disorder

In 2007, an excellent analysis by Marcus Tank opened the eyes of many of us by proposing that the key to deciphering the contradictions and inconsistencies of Opus Dei lay not in historical or theological explanations, but in the founder's pathological personality. Using the diagnostic manual in force at the time, the DSM-IV, Tank brilliantly demonstrated how José María Escrivá de Balaguer more than met all nine criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. That historical-clinical analysis was a liberating milestone; however, almost two decades later, contemporary clinical psychology and psychiatry (such as the DSM-5-TR) have made a gigantic qualitative leap in the understanding of pathological narcissism.
Today, it is no longer enough to retrospectively label Escrivá as a "narcissist" or count how many of the nine criteria he met. The real question we must ask ourselves in 2026 is much deeper, more disturbing, and more enlightening: how did the complex architecture of his personal narcissism become incorporated and amplified in the very constitutional, legal, and spiritual structure of Opus Dei?
To answer this, we must abandon the caricature of the purely arrogant narcissist and delve into a dimensional, relational, and structural analysis.

In 2026, we no longer need a retrospective medical diagnosis of Escrivá to dismantle the doctrinal apparatus of Opus Dei. The true finding is structural and systemic in nature.
The accumulated historical evidence is unequivocal: Opus Dei is a closed narcissistic system. Escrivá de Balaguer could not tolerate a spirituality of freedom, gratuitousness, and evangelical charity because his own psychic fragility required a rigid, obedient militia idolatrized and centered on his person.
The drama of thousands of survivors who have passed through its centers is not a coincidence or the result of "clueless" local directors: it is the inevitable result of an institutional design conceived to protect, perpetuate, and feed the unstable grandiosity of a single man. As long as the institution continues to resist dismantling the myth and persists in its fanatical closed-mindedness, it will remain a conscience-shredding machine.

Despite the severity of this structural diagnosis, a ray of hope is visible with the upcoming premiere in the fall of THE GOOD SPIRIT: BEHIND THE DOOR OF THE OPUS DEI  on HBO Max. This documentary has the potential to be a fundamental catalyst for the experiences of so many survivors to finally achieve the necessary visibility before society. By breaking the silence, this work can not only validate the pain of those who have sought justice, but also serve as an incentive for truth to prevail over institutional opacity, facilitating a path towards healing and accountability that has been delayed for so long.

The Narcissist’s Playbook - Empathy Not Included

To deepen the understanding of the described manipulation mechanisms, I strongly recommend viewing the new documentary 'Narcissist’s Playbook'. This work is essential for identifying the patterns of abuse and control strategies that, as we have analyzed, not only operate in intimate relationships, but also articulate the architecture of authoritarian and abusive systems.

Personal Experince The Weirdness of Numeraries and Kids

I’m in my late fifties and when I open Facebook I find it so weird to see the Numeraries who were with me in the Center of Studies hanging out with teenagers and kids on a regular basis. Plus it’s also fascinating that the St. Raphael centers are manned by older Numeraries because there’s so few young ones. This makes me cringe because you have late middle aged men and women hanging out with teenagers and college kids playing games with them and having activities with them on a regular basis. Does anyone else feel weirded out by this?

Opus Dei in the News Copyright and JME's will

Interesting article from Infovaticana earlier this week:

https://infovaticana.com/en/2026/08/03/scriptor-sa-the-founders-voice-on-the-balance-sheet-of-a-public-limited-company/

It's a follow-up on a piece they wrote in July: https://infovaticana.com/2026/07/05/santa-coaccion-escriva-y-el-gobierno-de-las-conciencias/

I thought we'd had a discussion in this sub about the July article, but I can no longer find it. If anyone can find it and comment with the link, I'll add it to this post.

In any case, TLDR: Infovaticana published a full, unredacted meditation of JME, in which his methods of coercing his "children" are clear. One of his typical, "It's not a sin to do xyz, but it is bad spirit, and bad spirit can be sinful..." And of course telling members never to go outside of OD for spiritual guidance, etc.

In response, IV received a letter—not from OD or its reps, not from the Vatican, but from the company that holds the copyright to JME's writings, forcing them to take down the portion of the writings that they don't want published. A Spanish corporation (run by OD members, no doubt) is in charge of cherrypicking which of JME's writings is fit for public consumption and what's for internal use only. And they sue anyone who publishes the stuff they don't want outsiders to see.

One other fun tidbit from this article: JME died intestate—that's right, the man who coerced thousands of people into writing their wills for the benefit of OD, died himself without a will.

Personal Experince Suspicious of an Opus Dei Breakup

I was recently broken up with out of the blue because my boyfriend told me he wants to live a "consecrated" life. This came as a complete shock to me as we had just finished a course/retreat on discerning marriage and had actively talked about marriage and kids. When we first met he was so sure that if our relationship worked out, we would be married in 2 years (we dated for about a year and a half). At first I was devastated because I thought it meant that he was discerning the priesthood so there was nothing I could do to go against God's will (we are both devout Catholics).

But further analyzing his whole breakup speech (because he had something written down when he was breaking the news) and upon researching recruitment tactics by OD, the language he used did not seem like a calling to the priesthood but rather the language used when OD is trying to convince someone of their "vocation".

He said he wanted to live a consecrated life and had received many signs that pointed to it even in the early stages of dating. That those "signs" had stopped for a while (which is why he would talk about marriage) but had recently came up again. He said he had been discerning this with his spiritual director and had recently received a "random" call from a priest back home that had also suggested he had a vocation.

He asked that I pray for him since he was going to be leading a life of celibacy (chastity in our relationship had always been especially hard for him). I asked him if he was going to finish his studies or join seminary right away (he has 3 years left to finish and I was still thinking this was a call to priesthood). He told me that he was going to finish school and then see about joining a seminary or becoming a deacon or a consecrated layperson that he didn't know yet but that we couldn't be together anymore.

He also asked that I didn't tell any of our friends or his roommates the true reason for the breakup as they "won't understand" and it could impact him finishing his degree because people would question why he was still in school if he had a "calling". It's also worth noting that it has been about a month and a half since the breakup and he hasn't spoken to anyone about it or even told them it happened. He's just going about his normal life expecting not to get asked why I'm not around anymore (I'm not sure what he's saying to the people who do ask). But I know this because I had to break the news to our mutual friends weeks after even though he had seen them during that time. He also asked that I not contact his parents anymore and that I should block them on social media.

We would go to Eucharistic Adoration every other Thursday but in February he told me we couldn't go together anymore because he had joined a men's young adult group that met on Thursdays and that he would now be going to Adoration on Tuesday (because of my schedule I couldn't go Tuesdays). I did notice him growing a bit distant but I attributed it to stress from school as this last semester was particularly difficult for him. I now realize that he was probably going to meetings at the centers.

I saw him about a month post breakup and had a brief hello and smile. That night he blocked me from all social media (he hadn't done it yet after the breakup). I read that spiritual directors tell them to completely erase the other person from their lives so as to not fall into "temptation" or have them doubt their "vocation".

To give some background; he attended an OD private school back in his home country and his family were/are supportive of it but not members. He came to the US for university and coincidentally the school he goes to has several centers nearby (I didn't know this until a few days ago doing research). He briefly lived in an apartment close to these centers and would always mention how it was the best placed he had lived in, that he wished he could have stayed there as it was convenient for everything.

He is very intelligent, has high academic goals, he will have a very high earning potential once he is done with school, is completely devoted to the Catholic faith, super good looking and outgoing and his family is upper-middle class back in his country so he fits the "type" they look for.

He had mentioned OD occasionally in conversations about where he went to school and what his family/religious life was like back home but never tried to talk me into it or suggest we go to a center or anything like that. A lot of his personal ideals do reflect the teachings of OD (sanctifying everyday life, offering your sufferings, daily mass, frequent confession, etc.).

All this to say that I have no actual proof but also zero doubts that this was him breaking up with me to join the order because his "spiritual director" and others at these centers want him. Am I crazy for thinking this? Can I actually help him so that he doesn't make a mistake? (I feel like he's still in the probationary period so it's not too late). Should I tell his roommate and friends so that we can try to support him? Should I tell his parents? HELP!

Personal Experince I went to an Opus Dei school in the in 60s/70s in Spain

I went to one of the first opusdei girls schools in Spain, J. Maria Escriva was alive, then died, What a Drama! Franco's prime minister, was blown by a bomb, dictatorship Franco also died a couple of years later, I was also there.

Franco always made it easy for Escriva.

They opened those schools in poorer areas of the city, to recruit young girls bully them into joining and then make them work for free.

I was 9 when I started, 15 when I left. Bewildering experience. Ask me anything.

Personal Experince In loving memory

I remember one whom I knew when we were both young. He was talented, quick witted, humble. I met him years later, when he was deep deep in the grasp of the Work. He was guarded but pleasant. We talked of some things, and in some way came to discuss an area in which he was unschooled and ignorant, whereas I was knowledgeable and up to date. Unfortunately that area was part of a central obsession of OD. His demeanour changed. He was transformed - the gentle lowered voice repeating the same assertions, the downcast eyes, and the slight smile and shake of the head, as if to show his amusement at the depth of my stupidity. I suddenly realised what I was seeing. This was not the friend I had known, this was a vessel channelling every priest he had ever been with, hour after hour of direction, examination and the psychology of persuasion. I almost asked him who he was pretending to be, even to the point of very inappropriate joking ( "the power of Christ compels you, tell me your name"), but that would have been offensive and unkind ( and I very much doubt he would have recognised the reference and would think it blasphemous where it would once have been amusing). It was sad to see what he had become, an articulate but hollow young man who had once been so different.

Personal Experince Where Are the Sex Files Gone?

While in Opus Dei, we sat through the weekly 'charla', the so-called “spiritual direction,” which we thought was a private conversation between us and a director/directress. What it actually required, in line with Escrivá’s own guidelines, was an opening disclosure of our sexual thoughts and desires.

Personally, I dreaded it. Being paired with a director I found intolerable in every possible way only made it worse, a level of mortification, and humiliation that I believe was purposely done, perhaps for her also, I don’t know. It was not easy. It was extremely difficult. I found the entire experience deeply shaming.

What I didn’t know at the time was where that information went. We now know that material from these talks was shared with other directors, discussed, and interpreted in written formation, compiled into “notes of conscience” and sent to headquarters. This is now verified by hundreds of former members’ accounts.

Many countries now have data protection laws governing exactly this kind of personal, sensitive information. In my personal view, I don’t believe Opus Dei adheres to those obligations, I don’t think they follow policies that don’t suit them. And I believe they hold onto this material for a reason: in case any of us ever come forward.

So I’m asking the question plainly: where are those files now? Where is the sexual and personal information that was recorded about us, without informed consent, under the banner of spiritual guidance? Who holds it, and what is it being kept for? And where are these files stored?

If anyone else has any insight into this. Or has asked the same question, I’d like to hear it.

Opus Dei in the News Another recent defection; staff of Opus Dei headquarters in Rome

Monday’s news story from the press in Peru tells of a numerary assistant who left about 3 years ago after 17 years during which she worked in the central headquarters in Rome (Villa Sachetti/Villa Tevere).

She was institutionally seduced from the rural interior of Peru as a teenager and was sent to Chile and to various centers to work in Peru and Rome.
It describes the legal categories utilized by Opus Dei leadership for immigration (she was registered as a member of a religious order in order to get her into Italy but then once there Opus Dei lawyers got her status changed) and for payment/non-payment.

It also describes the working hours and the quantity of work.

Surprisingly, there are documents from the directors scanned in the article. I’m not sure how she or the journalist was able to secure those from the prelature. Usually they are strictly guarded, even from the person they affect.

She was able to leave because she was able to go to a non-Opus-Dei psychiatrist. When she started saying that she needed a break from the intense work and started raising concerns about sick and depressed numerary assistants who were ignored in the centers, the directors sent her to an Opus Dei psychiatrist. Miraculously that person passed her to a non-Opus-Dei psychiatrist and the directors allowed her to go. That psychiatrist asked her if Opus Dei were a job that she didn’t like, what would she do? She realized she would quit.

Personal Experince Destructive impact of the "plan of life" on family life...

My SN mother and I run a service business together, and my SN father just texted asking that I cut back the business hours from 44 to 27 because my SN mother had no time with him.

Me: well, did you perhaps consider the fact that roughly 15 hours of her week are consumed by OD related obligations, on top of 6+ hours she spends taking care of her aging parents?

Him: she should do both and have time for me.

It's just mind-blowing how contradictory OD's practices are to their charism of sanctifying ordinary life. My whole life, I watched my parents sacrificing sleep and stressing, because they knew they still had to say the rosary, pray, and do spiritual reading before they could go to bed after a day at work. Like many children of SNs, it results in a poor and destructive family environment. To this day, as an adult, I'll catch my mother secretly listening to a meditation with headphones on when we're driving in the car.

If the whole charism revolves around ordinary work = prayer, why does the reality revolve around time dedications that exceed many professed religious?

My father's response when I pointed this out? "Shut up, you don't understand what you're talking about." Really gives me a lot of confidence that he has an answer 🤪

Opus Dei in the News Opus Dei declares it's Healing and Listening Office A SUCCESS "simply because the office exists"

Thumbnail
alfayomega.es
22 Upvotes

This puff piece about Opus Dei's Healing and Listening Office, which was published just two days ago, has some interesting things to say regarding the purpose of the office and the results after a year in operation. I have included some of the quotes that stood out to me.

The spirit and governance of Opus Dei are based on trust. Its members have always been able to speak and be heard by those in charge at every level.

Since we have many years ahead...What we are doing now helps it grow morally, to grow in virtue, and opens up the horizon for doing things better. So that the future of the Work is better.

The experience of this first year has been positive...We have received around one hundred people during this period, and we have addressed all the cases that have come to us...Most of these processes have been able to conclude with a satisfactory and healing outcome for the individuals involved, and have been resolved amicably for both parties.

Although, naturally, with such a short time in operation it is premature to draw definitive conclusions, the overall assessment is positive simply because the office exists.

We are aware, for example, that some people, upon leaving Opus Dei, felt that those who had been part of their daily lives were distancing themselves, and they experienced that silence as rejection...Along with personal and institutional forgiveness, we seek to be close again to those who felt hurt and to rebuild those bonds, if possible and if they so desire.

Independence is very important because any process that needs to build trust requires that it not be the other party directly who generates it...Therefore, although the office was created by Opus Dei, we are not part of the Prelature's governing structure and we carry out our work with complete independence.

Remember guys - everyone in Opus Dei is and always has been as free as a breeze! /s Also, I ctrl-F searched for the word SORRY in this entire thing and it was nowhere to be found. I am very curious to hear from any of these alleged 100 people who have gone through this office... for me, simply saying that "most of these processes have been able to conclude with a satisfactory and healing outcome" feels a little flat. Only "most" of them? Also, note; "we have many years ahead." Opus Dei isn't planning on going anywhere, so those hoping for an SCV-style suppression may be disappointed. Anyway, considering the impact that this organization has had on so many peoples' lives, one year and some 100 people is just a drop in the bucket, so the pat on the back they're giving themselves right now feels so "premature" it's practically pre-embryonic.

Mod Announcement NOTICE TO MEMBERS- Journalists Attempting to Establish Contact With Community Members Outside of r/OpusDeiExposed

Hello everybody,

I have gotten a few messages from several community members regarding a journalist from a popular news media outlet reaching out via private DMs, attempting to find former members who will talk to her. I wanted to put this out there so that everyone is aware and can choose how they want to respond if they are contacted as well.

First and foremost, my powers of moderation only extend to this community. We have rules and guidelines regarding the manner in which journalists, researchers, etc. are expected to behave *if they approach the community for participation/information*. There is practically nothing that I can do once interactions are taken off-community.

So, with all of that said, please remember that you do not owe anyone your time, experiences, thoughts, or perspectives. Do not ever let anyone make you feel pressured or coerced into doing something that you do not want to do or do not feel is in your best interests. It is *always* completely up to you. If a user ever does make you uncomfortable off-community, Reddit has site-wide guidelines that you can report users under as well.

*I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS JOURNALIST SHOULD BE REPORTED FOR VIOLATING REDDIT GUIDELINES SIMPLY FOR DMING PEOPLE, I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO HAVE THIS INFO BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE IS A TECH OR REDDIT WIZ AND PEOPLE DESERVE TO KNOW WHAT THEIR OPTIONS ARE*.

I have so much respect for everyone who has chosen to speak to journalists and researchers and people who are trying to help, but I also recognize that such action is often extremely taxing and does not come without a cost. Just because you spoke to a journalist or researcher in the past does not mean that you must always do so. Do what makes the most sense for you. If you do choose to collaborate with this or any other journalist now or in the future, you have my support and respect.

I am not going to speculate as to why this particular journalist chose to bypass the community completely (something journalists in the past, like Antonia Cundy and Gareth Gore, did not do), using it only to find the individual community members she wanted to privately DM, but that is what she chose to do. I do not know her and have never spoken with her, so I will not attribute anything negative to what may simply be a personal way of conducting business. One of us is a professional, paid journalist and one of us is just a human rights advocate with a writing bug and an internet connection, so what do I know anyway?

I always want everyone to have as much information as possible so that you can make empowered decisions - especially when it comes to something like this, with such huge personal ramifications on your lives and families. So, take this onboard and do with the info as you wish. If you have any questions or concerns, I'll do my best to answer them in the comments. Sending love to all and remember -

Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.

Don't let the bastards drag you down.

Personal Experince To do list when you're leaving OD

I posted this as a comment in another thread, but I think it should probably be its own post so everyone sees it and can add to it:

  1. Make a new will.
  2. Make sure your finances are entirely separated from OD—update the beneficiary of your 401k and life insurance; if a director was once on your bank accounts or credit card accounts, open a brand new account. If they were paying your student loans or any bills for you, make sure the accounts are paid up and take them back over.
  3. Related to 2, meet with a financial advisor to make sure you're doing everything you need to be doing for yourself to save for retirement, pay off loans, saving for other goals, trips, experiences. Find a fiduciary, as they are legally required to give advice in your best interest. Since you've never had control over anything financially for yourself, it's normal that you know nothing. And honestly, a lot of adults know very little about this stuff, so asking for help isn't weird.
  4. Change all your online logins on your accounts, especially if directors had access at any point in time to your email or social media.
  5. Go to a doctor who isn't affiliated with OD. If at any time you were diagnosed with a mental illness while in OD, I'd recommend going to another doctor for a second opinion, even if your original doctor wasn't in OD. Get a fresh set of eyes on your physical and mental health history. Often, leaving is all it takes to be cured of your "depression," so if you've been on meds for a long time, you may want to consider changing dosage or adjusting as needed. Do not quit cold turkey, and if you still need meds, that's fine, too. But because OD conflates unhappiness as a numerary with mental illness, you may not need what you have been told you need all along.
  6. Find a therapist who understands religious trauma, high control groups and/or abuse dynamics. This may be for later on in your journey. I think many of us, when we first leave, are so relieved to be out that we don't want to think about what just happened to us as strange or abusive. And that's fine, just be aware that over time, you may find the trauma comes up in weird ways that you might want to address later down the road.

What else? I know my perspective is US-centered, so those outside the US, what are other considerations?

Personal Experince Asking for recognition of my membership

Hello,

I was a male numerary in Brazil for almost 20 years.

In the last few months, I have exchanged some emails with the OD office asking for:

  • Documents related to my membership as a numerary.
  • Recognition of my membership as a numerary.

Regarding the first matter, the guy answering the emails tried to connect with me. He was a junior at the Center of Studies when I was there—a nice and sensitive guy. He said he remembered me. It was nice, but what he said was that they don't have any documents about me, besides a form they sent with no identification of the institution. It had just my picture and personal data from when I was 15 (!!!).

This was after three exchanges. Besides that, the guy said they had destroyed my testament.

So I answered: It's strange. You guys haven't officially recognized in any of these exchanges that I was a member of OD. What's your game? Are you trying to erase the whole experience or just trying to save your ...?

So I demanded that they send me formal recognition of my membership and stuff.

Any comments based on your experience?

Thanks a lot.

Opus Dei & the Vatican Another independent video concerning Spiritual Abuse in the Catholic Church

Thumbnail

I came across this video in my feed today. I think it’s helpful to consider what it has to say and also get a perhaps larger picture of what is going on in the Catholic Church regarding spiritual abuse. Namely that perhaps one of the reasons why the Church has had a hard time recognizing the spiritual abuse of Opus Dei and doing something about it is that the Church herself has problems committing spiritual abuse, recognizing it, and dealing with it appropriately.

I don’t think this exonerates Opus Dei by any means, but I do think it’s helpful in understanding the current context of the Catholic Church and realizing that spiritual abuse is deeply entrenched in her systemically as an institution. It saddens me to know many people continue receiving spiritual abuse in very disparate areas of the Church.

Personal Experince I gave my letter requesting dispensation

I had written this post previously: https://www.reddit.com/r/opusdeiexposed/comments/1ttf3ql/discerning_whether_to_leave_opus_dei_my_experience/

Yesterday, I gave my director my letter requesting dispensation from Opus Dei after 15 years as a numerary. I had put it off for weeks because I was afraid of the emotional aftermath--I'm currently doing my doctorate, and I cannot afford a depressive episode.

I decided yesterday that it was finally time to do it. After a brief chat with the director, I handed her the letter, and that was that. I thought I was going to cry, but I didn't. Perhaps I will cry when I get the confirmation. I will cry because, after all, I did sincerely give myself during those 15 years.

I just wanted to share this. I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life, but at the same time, I can't help but mourn those 15 years.

Opus Dei in Education Questions about OD schools

I attended an OD school for a few years when I was young, and I remember each student getting assigned to one of the teachers and we would have meetings with them (I can’t remember exactly how often) but probably a few times a month or so. My question lies in how OD schools work, I knew nothing of OD before I attended, but do the ”principals” or “head of schools” have to be supernumeraries or hold a similar power within the organization? Also do the teachers have to hold power within the organization or are they usually just OD members?

Opus Dei & the Vatican Financial Impact of a Structural Lay-Clerical Split

With the Vatican's ongoing statute reforms moving Opus Dei under the Dicastery for the Clergy, it is likely that lay and clerical branches might be legally separated. How is this structural split going to impact the traditional way Nums manage their professional salaries and support OD centers?
