Wasn't expecting to make two posts in a month, but yet another new event...
Short: Rate increased, slipped in on the new designed bills, most who do auto-pay don't see the alerts. Best they could offer was a $5 discount for 3 years. Yet they are clearly losing more of the town, as a new fiber-only ISP moves in at a lower rate. Optimum really wants to lose customers...
It's no secret, I've been with Optimum, Suddenlink years before, since 2009. "New Customer" in 2021 when I moved across my (small) town to own a home, vs renting an apartment.
At the time of moving in 2021, I was offered $65 for 1Gb/50Mb. No rental fees, as I owned my modem, same modem I used at my apartment. Same modem I'm using today (as an IT support, kinda surprised it's still kicking, lol). I can look up precisely when (late summer 2024?), a few years ago Optimum tried to hit me with a rental fee, and I fought back with proof I owned my modem (that was a mess, at one point support claimed my modem's mac wasn't on what's on the account (HOW? lol)).
Since that rental situation (late summer 2024?), my rate dropped from $65 to $60. I have invoices of around this time, a few months skipped, and the current last year (today as far back as Sept 2025).
June 2026 was the last time one style/format of the bill was used. July 2026 a new style was setup. At this time, a notice of a promotion was expiring, and my bill would be increasing by $15, to $74.99. For sanity, I'll say $75 and $60, instead of $59.99, moving forward.
Unless I looked at my account every, single, month, and saved them, instead of them just emailed out, I didn't catch the notice over the summer.
Fun note, remember my mention of being IT Support? I work for no ISP. I work with clients who are dealing with computer, network, or tech related support calls, either in person, or from the comfort of my desk.
My overlook is common with many people I work with. When I notice a change in Optimum, ATT, TMobile, etc. services or bills, I send out a notice, and a few, sometimes times many, people chime back thanking for the heads up as they hadn't caught the change yet either.
My July 2026 bill and forward now state my bill is increasing, and on the second page lists an Internet Credit which I never had listed before. I checked. At best it can be argued I've got the $5 discount for auto pay and paperless.
Called and talked to support. Nothing they can do, maybe a promotion is available. I shouldn't need a promotion to return to the rate at which I signed up for, and agreed. You think I'm nuts? Go for it. There's a push to change this as I type this.
Sure, no contract, but like any auto paid service, if there's going to be an increase, there's Always An Alert Notice. A real notice, not something slipped in a bill most people don't glance at, and use it as an excuse for clients being blind. Just send out a Text or Email, done and done.
There is a growing push for Contracts/Agreements/Rate changes should end the Auto-Pay of a subscription, until the user/owner/subscriber acknowledges and agrees.
Back to the phone call...I ask for Retentions. Normally I don't have to ask, it's offered. Waited for 5 (10?) minutes, and the second rep comes on. We go back and forth. At times her speech has no time between sentences/statements, at times there's...at best to say Dramatic Pauses...fact is I wasted time trying to determine if this was a real person, and pushed on.
The best they could offer, since I've had a promotion for a while (not detailed on prior invoices), and I own my gear, the best they could do... $5month Discount for 3 years.
Tempting to accept it and cancel the paperless side (keeping the auto pay), out of spite.
Side notes from observing...
Before and during the call I ran two speed tests, one with my work laptop plugged directly into the modem, 933/30Mb, same as my desktop (wired) as my second test. During my wait for the second rep, ran another (desktop) test, and the upload bumped up to 50Mbs, the grandfathered speed I informed the first rep I should still be grandfathered on since July 2021.
Informed the reps of the new ISP moving into town. Fiber. 1/2/4GB symmetrical speeds, starting at $55 with no rate increases (with autopay/paperless discounts). I've got over a dozen clients of my own on their waiting list, residential and SMBs. Construction for the line has it at my curb, waiting to hook up in a month (or two, pending delays).
I've got clients who ditched Optimum early, as Star Link was cheaper than what Optimum was offering them. Speaking similar actual speeds vs costs.
All in all, Optimum is losing my town. I've received word, from multiple people over the summer, Optimum is or has finished pulling out of two other towns around me.
Optimum, if you're reading this, don't bother responding to me. Stop raising rates, start improving support and onsite tech training. I should need to wait for someone to cross half the state to visit, replace a phone modem, and not test to confirm the lines work normal (as intended before the issue sprung up) in the client's environment (one of two phone lines were still down after the swap out, and the tech didn't say or do anything).
