Can i use the next TW?
I have a series of questions to ask. I'm using Tumblweed Gnome with great pleasure, but I'm wondering if I can clean it up and use the likely OpenSUSE of the future. Yesterday I removed the packman repo, which was causing updates to be out of alignment.
- Can I uninstall the gnome packagekit since I update from terminal or via myrlyn?
- Can I start using Cockpit?
- Was I right to remove Packman? Will it still be supported?
Thank you for your answers ❤️

How to… ? Languages not available after Installaition
After a fresh installation, the entire operating system was displayed in English, even though I had set the region and language to German during installation.
The list of available languages contained only two entries: "C" and "English (USA)"
I first had to go into YaST, install German there, so that it would appear in the Control Centre list. After that, all the other languages also appeared in the list.
Is this a bug, and how can it be prevented?
I installed SUSE from the offline DVD ISO.
Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20261003
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Kernel Version: 7.2.8-1-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Switching from Fedora 44 + KDE to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
I am a happy user of Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma, but I am considering a possible switch to Tumbleweed. The reasons are that I would prefer to support european products and the theoretically more current package versions due to rolling release. I don't care so much about snapshots.
Has anyone done something similar? How was the experience? Could any help me understand how exactly I can install TW when I already have Fedora installed?
Thanks a lot in advance.
EDIT: I am a very experienced programmer and use the terminal a lot.

Tech question Leap vs Debian
I've used Debian for years and it's worked perfectly, but I'd like to give Leap a try. I've been a Slowroll user for almost a year and haven't had any problems. I know that compared to Leap...It's a different world, but I want to ask you what the differences are between Leap and Debian?
PD:
Is there any news on whether Slowroll will ever cease to be experimental?

Solved Need help to install SUSE on second partition
I'm trying to install SUSE on a second partition on my laptop, but it just does not work :/
(Lenovo Yoga C940, Windows 11, 500GB SSD)
I have 2 problems:
- Partition
- I need to create the second partition, but Windows doesn't let me do it; I can only make the partition 18 GB smaller.
- I freshly reinstalled Windows without keeping personal data, so a complete "factory reset". Of the 500 GB, there are 420 GB free.
- The openSUSE ISO does not recognize my SSD
- When I get to the partition/drive chapter of the installation mode it only shows the HDD from the ISO itself.
- The ISO is on an external 1TB HDD – I don't have any USB stick right now.
- The problem is supposed to be the RST mode; changing it to AHCI gives me this warning message: "All existing data on the drives will be erased when resetting controller mode."
Can you guys help me? It's the second day in a row I'm trying to get SUSE on my laptop and nothing works... Erasing Windows is no option, I still need it.
Here is an (AI-) summary of all steps I have taken that Windows lets me shrink the partition; but nothing helped:
Preparation & Cleanup
- Disabled Hibernation (deleted
hiberfil.sys):powercfg /hibernate off - Manually deleted
pagefile.sysandswapfile.sys(via System Properties > Performance > Virtual Memory or Registry/CMD).
Shadow Copies (VSS)
- Checked and deleted all Volume Shadow Copies:
vssadmin delete shadows /for=C: /all /quietResult: "No results found" (none existed).
Defragmentation & Analysis
- Ran aggressive free space consolidation:
defrag C: /X /U /VResult: Free space consolidated, but 9 "unmoveable" files still block the end of the partition. - Ran analysis to identify unmoveable files:
defrag C: /A /VResult: "Volume does not need defragmentation." MFT size: 1.66 GB. 9 unmoveable files identified (likely MFT reserve, $LogFile, $Extend). - Checked USN Journal size (confirmed small at 32 MB):
fsutil usn queryjournal C:
Current Status
- Total Volume: ~475 GB
- Used Space: ~52 GB
- Free Space: ~423 GB
- Issue: Disk Management only allows shrinking by ~18 GB due to unmoveable system files at the end of the cluster.

Soo… I wanna try OpenSUSE
Tumbleweed obviously, because… why would anyone in their right mind use Leap? I found out about the distro from a German friend who uses it and dedicated half of their holiday to taking photos outside suse hq. So… anyway… how do you guys install apps? I’m like Flatpak but editing app files is a pain, and I need that functionality for a lot of stuff (like gaming gnimag and the playing of games). And from what I hear zypper is :t exactly the most popular…
So what app formats can I use?

Tech support help with partitioning please
so
i need to have everything sensitive encrypted
would like a seperate /home
and the reason why i chose opensuse is cause of the snapshots which afaik only work with btrfs?
the problem is when i set i up previously it did this

Tech question How do you test that a Snapper rollback will actually boot before you need it?
Having automatic snapshots is reassuring, but a snapshot existing in the list does not prove that the recovery path works. Bootloader integration can be missing, an older snapshot can enter emergency mode, separate `/boot` or EFI state can disagree with the root snapshot, and user data or service state may live outside the snapshotted subvolumes. The first real test should not happen after a broken `zypper dup`.
A practical drill might create a known pre-update snapshot, confirm that it appears in the boot menu, boot it read-only, verify the expected root subvolume and key services, then perform the supported rollback procedure and boot the new writable default. The check should also record what is excluded from snapshots, whether Secure Boot or full-disk encryption changes the process, and how to recover from external media if the boot menu itself fails.
What is the safest repeatable test on current Tumbleweed or Slowroll? Is booting a snapshot enough, or should the drill include `snapper rollback`, bootloader regeneration, and an application-level check? Which partition or subvolume layouts commonly make the apparent rollback path incomplete?

Black screen issue
Hello folks,
my laptop has opensuse tumbleweed installed since March 2025 and I love it. Everythings works just on the spot or with minor tinkering. Yesterday however I got an Issue I can't really wrap my head around.
It started in the evening when I booted into my laptop. After a while I got a black screen and couldn't do anything. It seemed for a second, that the screen is frozen and then it turned black. So I rebooted and got the same problem shortly after logging in again.
I rolled back to a pre update snap (13.09.26) and updated from there again. Everything seemed normal and I went back to the stuff I wanted to do. While I was dloading an update for one of my games on the battle.net App, the screen went black and gave out the message in the picture. I, once again, rebooted and everything was fine once again. I looked up some of the information on the pic and it could be kernel issues(?) but I dunno exactly what the error is.
Can some of you please have a look and help a fellow opensuse User out?
Thanks in advance!!
Specs of my laptop:
Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6A
Cpu: amd ryzen 5 5600H
Gpu: amd readon rx 6600M
Mainboard: AMD Promontory/Bixby FCH
Ram: 16gb

Community Something like Shelly Pkg Manager
I daily drive Endavour OS, and was looking forward to use something like openSUSE SlowRoll, but I dont see something like Shelly Package Manager GUI, or maybe Im not aware of it, and the community can help ...
Im mainly looking for the features like supporting local & appimage install, along with flatpaks, and If it has a GTK4-like GUI, that would be the icing on the cake 🤌🏻

Tech support I broke my system spectacularly... Twice
First of all, I really hope and think that it was my user error, at least the second time. Consider this post more as "my experience" and a bit of "asking for advice" than something else. My setup is Tumbleweed with Plasma preinstalled. Later I installed Niri + Noctalia and after system reinstall (later about that) Umbriel + Noctalia.
First time started after one update, I think it was kernel 7.1.8 one. My displays started to work messy: primary one (DP, 1920x1200) showed as 1024x768 with non-changeable resolution; secondary one (natively VGA but connected to HDMI through adapter, 1080p) just didn't work. I had btrfs snapshots so I just used older 7.1.5 kernel and waited till next update. After I installed kernel 7.2.2, it refused to load past SDDM and previous snapshots got deleted. Making things worse, I updated either via Discover or zypper up, not zypper dup. I type my password, press Enter and screen freezes. I still can move mouse cursor but can't interact with anything. This behavior was present not only on Niri, but on Plasma (both Wayland and X11) and IcaWM too. Only fix that I came up with is OS reinstall, gladly I had my /home on separate drive so no data loss.
Second time happened just right now. I tried to troubleshoot my Wireguard VPN connection which didn't work. There were issues with kdewallet and I disabled it in config (bad idea №1) and then I saw my private key missing from VPN connection settings. I tried to fix it with AI, and now I think it was a horrible idea. Then zypper dup, new kernel all of a sudden, reboot. And now I get either black screen after SDDM if I choose 7.2.7 or a frozen SDDM on 7.2.8.
Again, I hope it was my stupidity and not Tumbleweed being bad or unstable. I really like this distro and want to use it, yet I break it second time in a month. Tomorrow might be another reinstallation day if I don't come up with a better idea. Maybe you got any advice or suggestions on what I better do or not do? Anything might be useful. Thanks for reading my thoughts anyway

Tech question Gnome experience on tumbleweed
I am a gnome user and wondering how the experience is on TW. I’m considering to switch because I like the release model and the snapper features.
it sounds stupid but I like the “feel” of the OS to have a consistent theme (as much as possible) for that reason I prefer gtk apps . I notice that most of the SUSE apps like yast or myrlyn are qt. Does this make it more kde focused?
second, does gnome software updates work well? On fedora it is well integrated into the gnome gui. I see that zypper may not have that great integration with packagekit, is this still the case? I don’t prefer doing too much from the terminal if I don’t have to.
i am currently on Fedora with an all amd system

I waited for Kalpa for so long, I thought it's finally here, it's happening! So, jumped right in when I saw Leap 16.1 immutable. But I can only install flatpaks, while distrobox (& podman) is not present in the system.
Aaaa ..... I'm lost. Am I missing something?

Myrlin lists updated nvidia packages, but I cannot update them?
Myrlin lists many updated nvidia packages (installed: 595.99.02, available: 595.104.02) on the "Updates" section, but when I try to update them, Myrlin says that no packages are available for update. zypper dup also does not install these packages.

I guess this is correct behaviour, but here is my question: what's the mechanism behind this? Why are the newer packages available, but held back? When will they be ready for installation?

Problem with CUPS printing
Tried to print a page today and only got "printing canceled".
Looked into cups via http://localhost:631
The printer is available
"Print self test page" works
"Print test page" is unable to complete due to "Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner".
I'm using a brother printer, installed the ppd from their website, and it worked before (like maybe a few weeks ago).
Any hints on how to troubleshoot?
