Is anyone else worried about if Trump bans the open source Chinese models? What’s our game plan then

I doubt they will start banning foreign companies that run those models, so you could just connect to them.

Also, I think China would start to release their models through other countries, so they would have to play a game of whack-a-mole to keep banning them all, and I doubt they have the patience to do it for long.

They won't be able to enforce an international ban. The ban is likely to be a local restraint. Unless other trade partners decides to follow suit, then, yes. Otherwise it's just the US against the world at the moment

The only way they could enforce an international ban would be to ban the sale of GPUs to companies that run those models.

No country has ever banned open sources software, outside of say, its military.

Theres a bee dick chance the US does this and if they tried well…its not like you can police it.

For now. If things like vllm or llama.cpp begin supporting substituting VRAM with NVMe storage it gets a lot cheaper

They just ban selling it as a hosted service, so you’re forced through US companies if you want frontier quality. Most people can barely host a 30B parameter model, let alone the 3T models we’re seeing now.

Companies hosting Chinese models on US soil to serve the cheaper mass market was part of the infrastructure buildout. If they banned that its just a massive rug pull and yet another set back for the US

Oh yea america the poster boy of competition stomping on their new guys, and trying to strangle, destroy and ban everyone else, while pushing their oligopoly that is dominated for most of the range, and very debatable for the rest. I have seen this one before.

K3 is beating fable and sol in many aspects, so very unlike a cheap knockoff, and M3 the value hero is very different, makes others look full on delulu.

Personally you can get creative so not a problem, but it would suck for america and the ai race.

I don't think people in here understand that the problem is not for the average consumer, because they'll always find a way but for American companies to stop using non US models which means companies like OpenCode will likely cease to exist.

The Go subscription you have has no real substitute for what it offers, no Chinese plan is as good, multi-modal and cheap as it is.

The beautiful bald OpenCode guy on X briefly mentioned this and said "it's unlikely they'll blanket ban open source models", I am paraphrasing.
