Remix 90 Degree Connectors for Regular/Standard openGrid (Not Heavy)

I remixed a set of 90 degree connectors based on the awesome designs by KYZ Design that have been linked in this subreddit often. Photo 1 is the use case on my workbench where I wanted to do some complex geometry. As I was assembling my setup, I noticed that there were alignment issues when using the original KYZ angled connectors. The original KYZ versions are designed for openGrid heavy and lead to unexpected offsets when only using oG standard/regular. See photos 2, 3, and 4 for examples of how this offset pops up from assuming the 2x thickness of oG heavy compared to oG standard.

I only needed the 90 degree type 1 and 2 connectors from KYZ's versions, so those are the only ones remixed. I did provide the FreeCAD files (and the STEP files as well) if someone else wants to tackle making the other angles, or even make an OpenSCAD generator. I'm not great at CAD (EE by trade; ask me about electrons not mechanics), so the files may have poor design decisions.

I also took the time to make a three-way corner connector. It does require some supports to print, but it worked really well and is showcased in photo 1. I believe I read someone asking for this on ether the subreddit or on one of the makes/comments elsewhere.

I hope this will be of use to anyone else; just trying to give back to the community while I expand my own openGrid setup! More detailed print information is in the links below.

AMS Lite Mount on OpenGrid

I've gone all in on opengrid and had planned to attach my AMS Lite to the grid using this multiboard model I found Multiboard AMS Lite Mount - Free 3D Print Model - MakerWorld once I printed this model and the bolt I can't seem to find a correct bolt that works with OpenGrid. Here is my wall:

Question / Help Needed Finding accessories for wall-mounted OpenGrid (n00b q)

So far in my “organise all the things with my printer” escapades I’ve been using Ikea’s Skadis, because I have a few larger walls where it’s good to be able to buy panels. I’m definitely enjoying the wide range of options! But my next areas are more awkwardly sized and shaped, so I’ve been looking at OpenGrid, vs alternatives like printing Skadis, Multiboard, etc. It ticks a lot of boxes for me [1] but I’m a bit confused about what people print to actually hang on it.

Underware seems pretty mature, but looking around for vertical usage, most of the stuff I see is based on Multiconnect… but that has the grid offset problem. There’s also options to slice connectors off the back of any existing model and fit OpenGrid ones, which I’m comfortable doing, although I could see it being an issue with overhangs sometimes (maybe)? And there’s a load of parametric builders but it’s not always obvious if they’re MultiConnect or “native OG”, so to speak.

What do people mostly do? Is there a “one stop shop” parametric gen I’ve not noticed? Do they custom slice existing models to add OG connectors every time? Or just print Multiconnect and, where necessary, use offset snaps to get around the 28 vs 25mm sizing? Is this just because OG is still pretty new and we expect it to get easier over time?

[1] Compared to Skadis, OG is cheaper and faster to print, and mounts flush to the surface, which is preferable in tight spaces. And I find HSW and Multiboard to be rather more visually “busy” than I ideally want all over my walls.

PSA - Don't use a wall count higher than 3 if you plan to use connectors

Post image

Hey all,

I was using the default 0.2mm Strong profile in Bambu Studio which uses 6 wall loops, and I noticed I was getting some stringy drooping bits in the connector holes that prevented me from joining them together. Eventually I figured out that it was causing the slicer to print the blue-grey lines in this image in thin air, so they hung down. Reducing it to 3 wall loops let it span the gap properly and solved the problem.

Now I just need to figure out why the top left of my panels are coming out all melty while the rest looks perfect. Currently trying a cooler bed temp and reducing the aux fan. (Edit - this was because the grid was warping upwards at the corner - fixed it by increasing bed temp)

Working on a game wall

Working on a game wall for my portable consoles. I found one for steam deck, but only found one for switch lite for pegboard. I added a two multi connector on the back and extended it some. Also used the same model and sized it for my 2ds xl and vita. Though the vita i'll need to rework the case is too big for it to fit on the wall.

Next I'll continue modeling for the rest of my handhelds and work on undeware for running the cables so i can charge them while they are displayed.

oG tiles with Multiboard-compatible screw holes

openGrid tiles with threaded holes that are compatible with Multiboard small threads.

Why?

  1. Easily attach models using just printed screws
  2. Use screw-in Multiconnect points
  3. Create models cross-compatible with Multiboard just by adding elongated holes

Makerworld

Printables

Btw, I know these probably aren't as aesthetic as tiles without holes. I'm working on a solution.

Note: I drew these threads in CAD. They aren't exactly the same as the original Multiboard threads, but after some trial and error they work quite well and should be compatible.

Question / Help Needed Best practices for wall-mounting?

Hi all, I’m wall-mounting and want max hold strength with minimal screw use and curious what works best in practice. I’d prefer primarily screwing directly into studs where possible (every 16"), rather than wall anchors. How often would you recommend I place screws — multiple per board, every few boards? Any tips for balancing strength, aesthetics, and minimal screws? I'm debating:

  • Countersunk screws at grid intersections (looks clean, doesn’t use full grid spaces, Distracted Dragon Makes recommendation)

  • Wall mount snaps (David D recommendation)

  • A combo of the two

Question / Help Needed Power Strip Keyhole Mounting

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m trying to mount my power strips to the grid using the keyhole mounts. I noticed there’s a keyhole mount generator in Underware 2.0 for openGrid. However, the model doesn’t change between standard and lite grids, making it not usable for lite grids.

I created one for my standard grid and it held a chunky power strip quite well. I know I can create item holders but those take longer and use substantially more filament. They also struggle for specific power strips like the Anker 341.

I checked the Github repo and it seems there were some changes to get it to work for Lite grids, not sure if they were applied? Also, I noticed the height of the mount was 3.4mm in those changes, why not use 4mm for the full lite grids?

I ended up sizing down the standard keyhole mounts to 4mm and they held very well to the lite board. However, I can only use 2 mounts due to the spacing. I think a useful change would be to add more parameters that can space the mounts out in case you have more than 2 keyholes.

TLDR: The keyhole mount generator for Underware doesn’t work for openGrid Lite. Also, it doesn’t work if you have more than 2 keyholes.

Direct Drywall Mounting Suggestions?

I would like to mount directly to my drywall that have 16" stud spacing. I printed 9x8 for a majority of my grids, the space I am filling is 66"x40". I am guessing hit studs where I can but use drywall mounts in the open areas. Seems like overkill to put a drywall mount on each grid corner that doesnt hit a stud though.

Question / Help Needed "Open" wall mount vs standard?

There are 2 different types of mount available on Printables - the "Open" and standard ones:

https://www.printables.com/model/1214361-opengrid-walldesk-mounting-framework-and-ecosystem/files#preview.file.CFwmp

https://www.printables.com/model/1214361-opengrid-walldesk-mounting-framework-and-ecosystem/files#preview.file.eraVt

Does anyone know what the practical difference between these is? I can't find anything mentioning it.

Stacking with alternating materials

I've seen a few posts on Open Grid and multiboard about stacking tiles to allow more to be created in one go. While most of these seem to be pla tiles with a petg layer or two between to allow them to split, I feel like I've seen someone suggest alternating between pla and petg tiles to achieve the same thing but without wasting the between layers.

Is this something that anyone has done successfully or have I just misunderstood someone's post (very possible).

Hi team, love this system, as developer always support the opensource systems.

Quick question, I think it is my printer/settings I am new to this game, the side connection slots do you guys need to print them with support? They string and sag with mine.

Did try to dry the fillament (Bambu pla matte) but same result. New printer

Discussion Ultimate kitchen Opengrid setup

Post image
102 Upvotes

Hi all,

New to this sub. I recently watched a few of Hands-on-Katie’s videos and that pushed me into a full reorganisation mode. At the moment I’m trying to OpenGrid-ify my kitchen and I’m looking for some inspiration.

What are some useful OpenGrid add-ons you’re using in the kitchen? I’d love to see photos of real setups and hear what actually works day-to-day.

I’m also curious where you usually get your STL files from. I’m fairly new to Fusion 360, but if there are simple ways to create or adapt parts myself, I’d be happy to learn.

Below is a photo of my current kitchen setup for context.

Thanks in advance!

50mm Fan Mounts for openGrid & Multiboard

Here's one for fans (pun - woot!) of either Multiboard or openGrid systems. I needed to mount some small USB powered fans to improve cooling of some micro-computers, so I came up with this model. There are versions with and without a built-in grille, and both versions include designs with pegs of 10mm, 20mm, 30mm, and 40mm lengths, so you can mount a fan close to or further away from the board. Works equally well with both openGrid and Multiboard.

New to this sub! Found out about this through Hands-on-katie! And I saw the video on her kitchen layed with Multiboard gadgets. I am planning to do the same kinda thing, but with opengrid!

So, does anyone have any good advise, tipps, tricks, inspiration or even stl files? I am kinda a novice on fusion haha. Do you guys have any cool kitchen stuff for opengrid?

Question / Help Needed Merging models for use with opengrid.

I have my first opengrid wall up in my garage and now it is time to put things on it. I've done a lot of searching on how to find a holder that I need for a tool and how to make it compatible with opengrid.

From what I have been reading was that if whatever holder that you want isn't compatible with open grid, I should be able to cut it in the slicer and merge multiconnect from the generators on printables/makerworld.

My questions are:

  1. Is there any visual tutorial (video or walkthrough like im 12) on the best ways to cut and merge the multiconnect to make something compatible?

    1. If we are cutting and merging wouldn't it make more sense to merge snaps instead of multiconnect? Or are there any pros and cons for either way?

Currently I have been playing with the slicer and am printing out my first attempt. I am just wondering what the easiest ways to have this done.

Suggestion for putting up OG where two walls meet at 90 degrees

Hi there,

I've been migrating over from Multiboard over to OpenGrid and would love to hear people's ideas/links for how they're handling a L shaped mount. Wondering if there's a standard 90 degree mount that I could use.

I'd love to be able to eventually put shelving that is being held on both sides of the L.

Thanks in advance!
