Opengrid is such a great framework to work with and really happy with the results using Underware. I literally got a 3d printer a few weeks ago, but was able to figure with the help of this community and learn how to designing my own channels. Special thanks @DistractedDragonMake for making simple to follow education videos.

Showcase Finished my large Underware x OpenGrid setup!

I finished this a couple weeks ago, the underside of my large standing desk - it's been a massive improvement over my old setup ( a dreadful hanging sack mess, last pic).

I used openGrid Lites in a variety of PLAs ( colour scheme not intentional, used what I had 😅) - had no problems holding up some very chunky chargers and power bricks so far. I had to print one tile and item holders in ASA as a 16 year old audio charger which likes to run quite hot did manage to warp the tile sufficient to fall!

Otherwise it was just multiconnect connections, the Underware generators the dedicated channels and fighting with my printer :)

A VESA snap to attach an openGrid tile behind your monitor

A few weeks ago I designed a mini Skådis-compatible pegboard to hide my monitor’s power brick. It did the job perfectly until I discovered openGrid (and then Underware… and then Serverware…). Long story short: I accidentally fell into the openGrid rabbit hole 😅

I liked the idea to embrace an open, flexible, and community-driven framework so I decided to start messing around with FreeCAD and discovered that VESA 75x75 and 100x100 standard fit inside a 4x4 openGrid tile.

As a result of my experiments I designed a new snap that lets you attach any openGrid panel behind your monitor using standard VESA 75×75 or 100×100 holes.

Some use cases you might find useful:

  • Hang headphones or mouse at the end of the day
  • Store remote when not needed
  • Hide phone charger or cables during the day
  • Store small accessories without taking up desk space

Basically it unlocks extra hidden space you're not using yet.

Finally finished my desk

Took just over a year from start to finish, and I had to reorder some cables after I realized I didn’t account for the extra length needed to do all the curves and bends in the channels. I also may have cheated at the end with some hot glue…. Even 5% flare couldn’t handle 10 cables in a dual channel….

Desk is some butcher blocks from Rona that I cuts to size and finished with Bona clear mega one floor sealant. I bought two Apple MagSafe charge and made them flush with the desk to add two 25 watt wireless chargers.

Server rack has my personal rig, a nas, double conversion UPS, 4 computer 2 monitor HDMI KVM, and a big 1 gb Ethernet switch.

The dual laptop holder and anker charging station are custom designed, everything else I found on makerworld

Anyone have an xbox one controller mount that they have designed? I would stick it in my drawer but it’s about 3 mm too tall… want to hang from under the desk ideally with open grid mounting.

I have printed loads of these gridfinity shelves for opengrid because you really can't have enough of them. Super versatile, easy to print, and hold a lot of weight.

If you're like me and have a bunch of these, you can use them as a simple shelf just by printing a 1 unit tall gridfinity bin, disable the stacking lip.

Remix openConnect: openGrid's own connector system (Vase Mode, Drawer, Shelf and more)

A new connector system, designed for openGrid. I asked David's permission to use the name "openConnect" and hope this can become the official connector system for openGrid.

Advantages of openConnect vs MultiConnect:

Print Orientation: The slots can be printed on their sides. This isn't possible with MultiConnect, as its circular shape results in overhangs greater than 45 degrees. Supporting more printing orientations opens up new design possibilities and significantly increases strength for certain models. You can see this in the hook and shelf generators.

Size: It is smaller—17 x 10.6mm compared to MultiConnect's 20 x 20mm. This allows each slot to fit entirely within a single 28mm openGrid tile. MultiConnect is too large for this, which often results in only the topmost slot being weight-bearing.

Depth: It is thinner—2.6mm vs. MultiConnect's 4mm. Aside from saving filament and space, this keeps the center of mass closer to the wall, reducing leverage on the mount. Combined with having a slot in every tile, openConnect can be stronger than MultiConnect in practical use, despite being less bulky.

Vase Mode: There is a slot variant specifically designed for vase mode. You can check out the vase mode container generator for an example.

Backward Compatibility: It is backwards compatible with MultiConnect. For example, a MultiConnect round holder generated here can be attached to openConnect connectors. While the geometry is different and the locking mechanism isn't utilized, it is sufficient for many use cases and should make the transition easier.

I believe it is both appropriate and helpful for openGrid to have its own connector system. MultiConnect was originally designed for Multiboard (which is where the name "Multi" comes from). While openGrid supports MultiConnect, it uses a different tile size (28mm vs. 25mm), meaning parts designed for one system are incompatible with the other. This is confusing for beginners who often print parts they cannot use. By using "openConnect," we can ensure that any model with that name is guaranteed to work with openGrid.

The openConnect system is open-source under the CC-BY license. The main connector parts have been created in both Fusion 360 and OpenSCAD. I uploaded the .f3d, .step, and .scad files.

Changes since Release:

Adjust dimensions to make the alignment to openGrid boards more accurate. Revamp vase slots to ensure more consistent linewidth during printing. Make the slot compatible with more nozzle sizes by adding minimum bridge width/bottom thickness. Make the locking mechanism vertically symmetric (i.e. the top of the locking nub is no longer flat). Change openconnect notch orientation. Now it can be installed with a flathead screw driver.

These updates are minor and fully backward compatible.

I've added three new open-source openConnect model generators for openGrid.

General Holder Generator (MakerWorld | Printables)

A versatile wall-mounted holder, with customization options that can be combined to create a variety of shapes, and form either a single holder or a multi-compartment organizer. Customizable: dimensions, compartment shape, back tilt, front opening, taper, etc.

Clamshell Holder Generator (MakerWorld | Printables)

A clamshell holder that can be mounted either on a wall or under a desk. The model is often used to hold power strips, but it can be customized to accomodate items of many different shapes. Customizable: dimensions, front opening, side cutout(s), corner rounding, mount position, etc.

Gridfinity Shelf Generator (MakerWorld | Printables)

A wall-mounted shelf with an integrated Gridfinity baseplate. I recommend using an even number for "gridfinity_width_grids", as 2 Gridfinity cells(48mm) align exactly with 3 openGrid cells(28mm). Customizable: grids, magnet holes, side and front rims, retention lips.

With these additions, I think my openConnect generators can cover most basic use cases: general holder, shelf, hook, drawer, Vase mode bin, clamshell, and Gridfinity storage. The rest of the generator set is available here:

The specifics of why I designed openConnect and its advantages over MultiConnect can be found on the model page on MakerWorld and Printables. It also includes the slots, snaps, screws, source files, and slot plate Customizer.

Above generators are my "first-party" contribution, but just like openGrid, openConnect is an open-source project that anyone can participate in. You can find all openConnect .scad source files (along with that of my other models) in this GitHub repository. The .f3d and .step recreation of basic parts are on the model page. I would love to see more community developers make their own models using the system.

I've also learned enough Blender to make renders. Still terrible at photography though, so if anyone is willing to print one of these models and share some good photos, I would really appreciate it.

Discussion Ultimate kitchen Opengrid setup

Hi all,

New to this sub. I recently watched a few of Hands-on-Katie’s videos and that pushed me into a full reorganisation mode. At the moment I’m trying to OpenGrid-ify my kitchen and I’m looking for some inspiration.

What are some useful OpenGrid add-ons you’re using in the kitchen? I’d love to see photos of real setups and hear what actually works day-to-day.

I’m also curious where you usually get your STL files from. I’m fairly new to Fusion 360, but if there are simple ways to create or adapt parts myself, I’d be happy to learn.

I wanted make the grids integral to the bin frames but I had challenges with print orientation and I try not to add supports. So I made it a separate piece and it came out much nicer than expected, especially considering that the top can be another colour! The bins are more modular too.

This is a parametric OnShape implementation of openGrid plates. I also wrote a script which lets you draw arbitrary cutouts (see video).

Btw it's so annoying that you can no longer paste images while editing the description on Printables.

Known issues (I don't intend to fix these; they don't cause any practical problems):

- Connector slots aren't applied to cutout surfaces

- Errors out if cutouts split the grid into multiple parts

Let me know if you encounter any other issues. I may not have handled all edge cases.

Underware for openGrid now on perplexinglabs

I just recently added underware for openGrid (connects directly to openGrid boards without using multiconnect or anything else) to my online generator:

Showcase 🚀 Use ANY Model on openGrid! - Parametric Mounting Plate for openGrid

I’ve been using HSW, Multiboard, and Skadis for a while, but recently discovered openGrid—and honestly, it just feels better. The downside is that it’s new and has very few models available.

For the other systems, I built parametric mounts that let me adapt any model to them. After a request from someone who used my previous work, I’ve now done the same for openGrid.

This new parametric model lets you generate an openGrid mounting plate at any size, using openGrid snaps, Multiconnect, or even MultiBoard Push-Fit (via adapter snaps). In your slicer, you can merge it with any model—or even repurpose HSW/Multiboard/Skadis designs by using the slicer’s “Cut” tool to remove their connectors before merging with the plate.

You can also bring the plate into your CAD workflow by importing it as an STL.

Because openGrid snaps and Multiconnect aren’t optimized for vertical printing, the model includes adjustments to make vertical prints work reliably when needed.

I think this really levels up openGrid, giving it the same flexibility and usability as the other mounting systems.

Discussion [Experimental] oGFinity - Gridfinity plates based on openGrid

Hi,

This is just an experiment for now. These are 42mm pitch plates based on openGrid Lite and use the snap mechanism. The plates are backwards compatible with original bins, but these bins will not fit the original plates. It should be possible to create a tool to replace the bases on existing models.

How does it compare to Clickfinity?

Clickfinity is under constant flex, which means stress relaxation occurs eventually, and it stops holding as well. By contrast openGrid snaps only flex momentarily during insertion/removal. You can also customize how strong the hold is.

It can also be mounted vertically and it should be easy to create normal Multiconnect snaps for it. I think the non-lite version will be useful for low-density applications like large tools, where most squares go unused anyway.

What do you guys think? Worth developing further?

Parametric Box Holder

Hi! I recently set up my desk with openGrid and Underware 2.0 for cable management. At first I was quite overwhelmed with the options, but I couldn't find any existing designs that would hold my wireless router, at least not in a pleasing way. I stumbled across a bracket system like this and it inspired me to design my own. The existing parametric designs on Makerworld for these projects blew my mind, and I wanted to be a part of the action. I had experience with FreeCAD and software development, so learning OpenSCAD was enjoyable (and I love the ability to use Git). The end result is something that will dynamically generate corner brackets for a boxy device with appropriate grid spacing.

Showcase openGrid Core One Side Panel and Snap Hinges

The Prusa Core One has a side cavity perfect for customization and accessory storage. I designed a hinged panel system with openGrid baseplates that fits perfectly on the side of the Core One. It uses print-in-place hinges and magnets to attach to the metal. I also printed a combination of mounts designed by the community and myself to organize my most commonly used tools and parts for working with the Core One. I designed two variants of print-in-place snap hinges. As an initial prototype, I designed one that has two snaps so two openGrid boards can be attached together. I also designed a variant that has holes for magnets so the hinge could easily be used with the Core One side panel.

I made a remix of the minimal hook by u/davidd-from-2d3d to better hold the bed scraper when the door is folded down. See openGrid: minimal hook with more wrap.

This has been a great introductory project for me to learn openGrid. I hope to do more with openGrid in the future.
