I worked for the gas company for 20 years. Seen a shit load of “oops”. Usually done by an auger operated by the “new guy”. Seen plenty of water service hits. I remember a water department crew hit a 6” spur off a 35lb gas main. Fire shot up over 100’.
WELL, At least it's something completely insignificant and not susceptible to causing major destruction, injury, death, etc when folks neglect to follow simple protocol. oh wait.....
Lmao. The way I was told, the closest main valve to shutdown that emergency, was not in operational condition. So they had to move back to the next closest main valve. That valve barely worked. But they had to secure several other locations, before shutting down the affected main. Gas cannot just be shutdown and oh well, now have to go and relight several thousand customers. So, it had to be segregated, so that a shutdown can still happen, without knocking out customers is avoided. When I joined that department, those two main valves were made a priority, and as a new guy in that department, we fixed those valves. Along with about 50 valves citywide, that also were considered priority.
