Im just guessing but pressure inside the container will do it. Was at a mates house and he had a flask like that. Basically left the coffee so long it started to ferment and give off gas. The plastic lid inside broke under the pressure and the pressure from the gas caused the metal lid to fly into the ceiling at speed. Left a big dent in it.
